No bike today, nor likely tomorrow. I cannot believe how hot it is. Simply cannot. When I stepped out after work I was just hit in the face with it. Nearly took my breath away. Weather guy says it feels like 112.

I saw 113 for the heat index--so it feels like Arizona out there, without the benefit of evaporative cooling. I went out to get the mail and felt like I was in an oven. It's brutal. No riding for me for the next few days. Hopefully this weekend's a little cooler...

It isn't that high here, only mid 90's but the humidity is a killer. I am going to get up before it is light out and try A short ride in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow.

Nice VW:)

I'm doing lots of work in the early days this week, in the hopes that I'll have more outside time at the end of the week with the (slightly) cooler weather.

We got up to 63 degrees today.

Woohooo.

I'm sitting here in a wool shirt and thick sweater and sweatpants. I'm so tired of being COLD.

the one day it got hot like that (2 years ago?) I rode to work and back. 4 miles each way, very exciting, it was 104 when I got home. maybe you should do short rides?

Ride early or ride late...We don't ride until about 6:30-7pm on weeknites and on our weekend rides we are out the door by 7-730am. You can get in an hour or two before the oppressive stuff starts. Plus, the breeze factor is increased by the speed of the bike. I haven't had much trouble with the heat this way, and I am not a person who can normally deal well with heat and humidity.

When it gets hot on my commute home I stop and wet my jersey and hair down for the ride home. I am also lucky to pass by a local swimming hole on my way home. Pit stop there for sure :)

WOW- you guys are sweltering. We normally have 10 days above 100 a summer. We are on day 21 at over 100- and the 10 day forecast doesn't have us any less than triple digits. For crying out loud-it was 110 on Saturday- the hottest July day in over 100 years of records. This heat is insane. I rode at 6:30 am on Sunday, but it was 100 when I finished at 11:30. I can't go out for my long training rides in the dark at 4 am.
We're in OK, not AZ- but I think the state is confused. This extreme heat is killing me.
I'm trying to just grin and bear it. Stick it out. I've been doing my weekday rides at 5:30- just as the sun is coming up- before work. I'd rather sweat to death than die of boredom on the trainer. ;)

Hope it cools down for ALL of us soon. Until then, I hope you can find a way to ride and not die of heat exhaustion.

I think it's the air quality I'm struggling with more than the heat (which is bad enough when you're not acclimated to it, which none of us here are - it's been three days of 90° and three days of 70° since June). Heat = ozone = shortness of breath. :(

For me, that's just too hot to ride in. We hit 100 over the weekend and it was oppresive. I got up early and rode in the early morning and was off the bike before it got real bad. I live on a lake it it was too hot to even go out and swim. I either ride early or late on days like that. I just can't take the heat and humidity. Some people are not bothered by it, like my sister, she enjoys the heat. We're all different.

Notice that I'm not the one complaining. Lived in hot country. I rather enjoy the fact that I was able to sit out at noon and not break a sweat. (but I'd like to be a little warmer) :o

It got up to 106 this afternoon. At 5 PM when I woke up from my name, the weather guy said it was 101 and felt like 110. Holy crap!

So, I didn't ride today (again). I didn't ride yesterday for the same reason. I have a doctor's appt tomorrow at 9, so I would have to get up at a reasonable hour anyhow. I used to get up at 6 every day (work ended on Friday for me) so getting up at 5 to ride doesn't seem unreasonable.

I am NOT NOT NOT a morning person, but my mood will be really bad and my mental health (I wish I was joking) really depends on exercise. My therapist suggested I do whatever I need to to stay focused on my goals today. He's very much right. I have been so happy, so healthy, and really in great shape. I can't let the heat get me down! I will be home in a week and it will get easier (an hour outside of Chicago it is not THIS hot). I am used to riding in 92 degree weather now, but not 106 degree with 86% humidity! My asthma does not tolerate that.

I'm in south Louisiana and have to wait until at least seven in the evening to ride or I'm pretty sure I would just plain die. It's brutal!

If you're going to send heat, please localize it to Knot and Biciclista. :D

Temps in the 60s are plenty warm for me. But then, I'm generally not a fan of of temps beyond the low 70s...that was one of the main reasons why I moved to Seattle in the first place.

It got up to 111 degrees - air temp - here yesterday. We played golf yesterday morning and by the time we had some lunch and got home it was already 105. Sometimes we like to squeeze in a short ride in the afternoons after golf but in this heat, forget it! It's only gotten up to 111 degrees here 10 times in the 130 years they've been keeping records. It's crazy!

She's two months old.. one of the first things I bought the weekend we pulled the trigger was a hitch mount for the bikes. It does have a roof racks, but was a little dubious about lifting the bikes up on the roof.

So far I'm not dissapointed in the least. Love my VW.

She's lovely!

I got my TDI Sportwagen last September and still love her. I eventually want to do a hitch (yaks on roof, bikes on back, dog inside - or all toys on a trailer) - but my budget needs more slack before that happens....

um, Knot, speak for yourself. I am absolutely NOT complaining. I walked today at noon and worked up a sweat (must have been closer to 70 -- the sun came out) after 2 miles. i find this weather so much better for walking, riding, and working in my yard. I nevah EVAH want to live in the south...

Well.. as a desert dweller.... we ride early !
All of our group summer rides start at 6 am.

I can ride when it's up in the 90's for a little while, especially when the humidity isn't too high. It's dry in June, but once the monsoon season starts, and the humidity creeps up I start to overheat easily and need to be done and back by 8:30 am.

I do short rides early in the AM, before work, a couple of days a week. I go whether it's warm or cold, but today, at 5:30, it felt positively awful out there. It must be 90% humidity. Should have taken my inhaler.
My best riding temps are between 55 and 70. I have to acclimate to anything higher. Last summer, I had to; we had 25 days over 90 degrees.
I lived in Florida for 5 years and AZ for 16. I can't imagine riding in either of those places during the "hot" months. I used to walk at 5 AM in AZ, and it was already 105 degrees by then, in the summer. All of my exercise was done in a gym.

Yesterday it was 96 degrees here with a heat index of close to 110  While my asthma has almost disappeared, I am cautious about riding in conditions like that - extreme heat/humidity or too much cold air are both triggers - though cold air seems to trigger my asthma more easily.

Last night I opted for a spinning class (which was quite warm indeed), today is a rest day, and tomorrow the temps are going to give us a break for a few days. If there hadn't been a spinning class scheduled I would have ridden in my favorite park, but wouldn't have been able to really work at it - not in that heat/humidity. Still, any ride is better than none!

I am with the asthmatics out there. I rode 20 miles in about an hour and 10. That is a decent pace for me, but that was not counting the breaks I took. Normally, I wouldn't need breaks for the first 20, but that was AWFUL. It wasn't particularly hot - it was only about 82 when I got back, but the humidity was a killer.

I needed my inhaler on the way up a long, but shallow, climb. I haven't used my inhaler in a few months - it used to be daily - so that is saying a lot. I will keep getting up at 5 AM if this is what it takes to get out there, but be careful ladies.

I've managed to acclimate a bit to the constant 100 degree temps out here in Austin. But I find that when I tackle the hills (It is called the "hill country" for a good reason!) and really have to put some force into it, that I tend to overheat quickly. Is there anything that I can do diet-wise to help my body cope?

I got in 37 miles yesterday... but shortened the club ride. Note to self: BRING SHORTS. Riding in the cotton cargo pants from work... we got to 96 (they said heat index 115 but that's all kinds of inflated IMO) and the 8 miles to get to the ride took it out of me.... "dinner" was gatorade and lemonade. I didn't even want a beer ;) The fruit salad with balsamic vinegar that little elves had left in my fridge (a friend who's in town who is a whiz with foodstuffs) had to wait for today.

It is entirely too hot here in Maine as well--too hot for me to even think about running or even riding right now; I don't tolerate heat/humidity well at all. Yesterday I did a 1.5 mile ocean swim (which felt GREAT); today I am being kind of a bum and just walking some errands but not doing anything more strenuous than that, then I work tonight in the nice air-conditioned hospital :). Maybe I will try to do an early run tomorrow morning before it gets too bad.

I'm going back to Chicagoland early because I need to ride. I talked to my mother today (was supposed to go home Monday of next week) and she was like, you should just come home.

I might do a 50 mile ride Sunday up to the lakeshore and back. I get to ride with my old cycling group! I will be really happy when I finally get there.

and here I keep thinking that the PNW is where I want to live, you know, being a liberal tree hugging hippie and all. I feel like my peeps are there. It's so beautiful and cool, but I just don't know if I can handle 65 degree days in summer. I'm already a freeze baby when it drops below 70. I *guess* you get used to it.

I'm okay with like 85 degrees. Moving here has been scary. I have never lived anywhere this warm or been in heat this intense. The winters are ridiculous, though. They are a joke compared to lake effect. I just wish they could clear the roads and people would shovel. The ice is no joke, though.

The problem is there is no lake. I can't just go up to the Lake and lie in the sand, run in, find it freezing, run back. Rinse and repeat.

In AZ, it's riding by 5:30 and in no later than 8:30-9:00 (as AZ Fiddle says.) Sure, it's a dry heat. Just like hell.

I wear a Camelback & make sure it's filled with ice water. It encourages small sips during the ride & keeps me cooler.

It's a good time to hit a spinning class or do weight training - or both.

5:30 is too early for me! I just went walking at 6:30 this morning and it was nice. Temp in the low 70's with a nice cool breeze - ahhh! Back to the upper 90's this afternoon, then triple digits again for several days --

I don't know how you desert southwesterners do it. Up here, when it gets hot, at least it usually doesn't get bad until at least late morning.

I've been getting up and riding or running at 5:30. It sucks, but at least the heat isn't too bad. This morning it was 90 degrees on my porch when I returned from my ride just before 7 a.m. (admittedly, my porch faces east and traps the morning sun making it hotter than the surrounding area). I did an evening ride on Monday when the heat and humidity made it hard to breathe. The riding wasn't so bad (cycling is so much better than running in this weather since you create a nice breeze), but stopping was brutal. I looked like I had just come in from a swim.
