Last Thursday I went to the LBS to have my bike fit updated. Apparently I was doing it all wrong! My stem was too long, my seat too far back, my cleats not advantageously placed, my saddle too wide for my sit-bones. And I went ahead and ordered new handlebars (http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1086806_-1_400912_400002_400213) with the awesome ergo flats and shallow drops.

Since making all of those changes, my avg pace has gone from 15 mph to 16.5 mph! In less than one week people. Granted, this is an average over 25-30 miles, whereas I know I can sustain 15 mph for 75 miles. But I am doing my first century tomorrow, and I'll be interested to see what my total speed gain over the longer distance will be.

Anyway, this is a big plug for getting properly fitted. It will make a huge difference to you in terms of riding comfort and performance. Totally worth it!

I second the sentiment.

I had a professional bike fit done at the local medical center's sports medicine cycling performance lab. Pretty much everything needed adjusting, down to the three shims that now reside under my cleat.

The fit was on Tuesday and on subsequent rides this week, I have been getting 2 mph average increases and have been exclusively using the big ring in relatively hilly Pittsburgh.

Professional bike fits can be a great idea but they can also be a disaster if the fitter is focused on a racing position and the rider isn't a racer. The Bike Hermit and I have spent hundreds of hours correcting "professional fits" for people who were in agony because the fitter followed a plan for the racing bike/racing position. I have no issues with racing but the fit is not for everyone. Just make sure the fitter understands what is important to you when being fit and they understand the riding style and habit your are striving for.

I agree and love my bike fitter! I think a bike fit is some of the best money a cyclist can ever spend.
