This is a really good article (http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/04/the-bicycle-dividend/?hp) from the NY Times.
I haven't had time to read all the linked articles but it looks promising.

"I wish there were more bike ladies. Perhaps we would have strength in numbers. Get up, get out and go!"
I like this quote from the comments section... :p

That IS really good. I appreciate an article that has facts and a calm tone!
Great article! And the linked rebuttal by The Economist to the Cassidy rant in the New Yorker is a great read, too.... "from an economic perspective". :D

"For bicyclists, increased numbers often lead to increased safety. As bike paths on roads attract larger numbers of cyclists, the chance of car-related accidents declines, promoting further use. Safety appears to be a major factor for women in particular."
This is definitely true in our little suburb of St Louis. I am less likely to be crowded on my normal route because: they've gotten used to be being there or because that bike rack indicates they ride themselves.

I liked this article. It was positive and so were the comments.
