View Full Version : Bay Area TE Gathering?

Those of you on Bike Journal know how they do their annual reunion. It would be cool if we did something like that on TE. Different areas "host" the reunion and set up rides. I went to one over Memorial Day weekend down at Paseo Robles a few years ago.
I'm getting overwhelmed thinking of all the great riding. Do you focus on the wine country or the three Bay Area mountains or the coast and the Golden Gate?
Do you throw in a day of just being touristy? Alcatraz and Muir Woods are so cool.
You'd have to pick a date far enough in advance that people could plan a vacation - maybe like next Memorial Day weekend.

Great idea - I'd be happy to help with route and entertainment planning in my neck of the woods (just over the Golden Gate bridge).

That sounds cool!
Although, I don't know if I'd be able to attend, I would suggest some evenings out for dinner, completely un-bike related.

I was hoping you'd say that. :D Marin is probably one of my favorite areas to ride. And there is all that yummy food to sample at Point Reyes Station.

I'd be very open to something like that. DH and I have already toyed with the Bay Area as a vacation destination. Ideally, it would be something we could combine. Not that I would invite him to a TE gathering; he could happily amuse himself without me I would think. Otherwise, it might be something I could budget to do just by myself, especially since I have more vacation time than he does.
So, count me in as a definite maybe, especially if I can rent or borrow a set of wheels while I'm out there. Flying with a bike is just so cost prohibitive anymore.

You don't have to leave DH behind. Thom gets dragged to every TE thing I go to. He's generally well behaved and seems well liked by the other TE'ers. :D

Definitely count me in. I've been dying to ride in the Bay Area since I started riding!
Whether or not my H would join us would depend on timing and goat sitting.
And I would likely drive down, so I *could* be persuaded to bring extra bikes for those short people like me who might need them. ;)

Great! He seemed excited when I mentioned the possibility. I assume there are bike rentals available in the area. He rides a 59 or 60 cm bike. We had good luck with our rentals in Utah, so I'm not overly worried about that part of it--especially if GLC brings a bike for me! DH said she has to bring a goad baby, too!!! :)
Just keep us posted!

Although I've met a few Bay Area TE'ers, I've never had the opportunity to ride with any. Count me in. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I'm not in the Bay Area but I am in the Napa area most of the week, so I could be persuaded to come out that way...

I would love to come "down the hill" and join you guys. I would need at least 6 weeks advance notice in order to get the time off of work.

I should have my bike with couplers by then, so I could fly with my bike pretty easily. Definitely would think seriously about this.

The Bobs (jobob and her DH LeeBob) will be present & correct. Especially if there's a bakery involved.

Can we set a date? Memorial day is probably good. That would give 3 days for various riding options.

DH and I will definitely look into how feasible a trip to San Fran is when we can get a better idea of airfare for late May. My guess is that we'd make it a weeklong trip with Memorial Day weekend sort of in the middle. I'll certainly keep you posted as to what we decide. In the meantime, if anybody has a decent hotel recommendation, let me know. We'd love to stay in the city someplace that's nice but not necessarily posh. Thanks!

In the city - Villa Florence. Right in Union Square and generally very good rates.

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like a lovely place. Plus, it offers a government rate, which I love. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
I'm going to pitch a trip from Thursday, May 24th to Thursday, June 1st to the hubby. His birthday is on the 26th, so it would be great to spend it in a beautiful city. It's likely going to come down to timing and cost. Our other big trip for 2012 is to Maine for 10 or so days in September. That's likely be a relatively "cheap" trip as trips go, but he gets less time off than I do, so we'll need to factor that in as well.
I sure hope it works out! When we thought our trip to Zion National Park was falling apart because of a possible governement shutdown, I started to put a trip to San Francisco together as a Plan B. As excited as we were about Utah, I think we were a tad disappointed that we weren't going to go to California. So, it's definitely near the top of our To Do list.
