Wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. We ended up spending part of the day Friday at Arlington after the funeral (per our plan), then spent Saturday and Sunday downtown at the mall seeing the monuments and museums. We also decided that the next time we visit DC we are bringing our own bikes since we learned we can take them on the metro trains.
Also decided if we do bring our bikes I will take my chances riding in the roads with the cars vs the paths with pedestrians.
I saw several things I've seen before and a few new things. (Everything was new to hubby). The WWII memorial is very impressive. That was my favorite of the things I had not seen before.
Need to eventually go back because there was one museum I wanted to see we didn't have time for, that is the Postal Museum. Also we would like to see the Native American museum. That was not on our list, but the cashier at the Air and Space museum told us to go there to eat instead of eating at the Air and Space museum (just a McDonald's). So after seeing the little bit on the way their their cafeteria we need to go back and see it.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. I always encourage visitors to get off the Mall and explore some of the neighborhoods. DC is a real city and it's a great one.

Glad you had a good trip!

I really enjoyed the Postal Museum, and not just because I've been a contractor for them for years. Really, all the Smithsonians are so good.

Brandi, I'll have to remember that. Our other meal was at the Hard Rock Cafe. My husband had never eaten at one of those either. I had not eaten at that one before, but have eaten at a couple of different ones in the past.

NY biker, thanks. Hopefully we can get back there in a few years (and it won't be another 20 years before I get back there again).

tulip, next time we go we are planning on bringing our bikes with us so we can do more exploring. But with only 2 days and my husband having never been there we needed to see what we could cram in. Next time we go it will be for a longer trip. Although we did end up getting off the metro at the wrong stop the first time and had to walk several blocks to the mall. LOL I think it was near a university. LOL
