I will start with my lovely 20 mile ride this morning in the wind-swept corn fields. I saw a large number of cyclists no matter where I went - which is rather unusual. I am accustomed to seeing some out there, but this was different. It was nice to see everyone taking advantage of the lovely warm weather :)

I had planned on 30-35 miles, but I had a little mishap before I got going. Had a little clipless fall and got caught up in my saddle...my girly bits were in agony  :( I suspect there is some bruising, and I probably shouldn't have ridden but I wasn't about to NOT ride after all of that  I just rode until my soft bits started telling me they were ready for a break - which turned out to be 20 miles.

The ride was awesome, and my average speed was higher than it has ever been - 13.4 mph! This is my personal best so I am happy. Considering my riding position I will never win any races.

All I can say is I am very thankful I had my PI elite bib-shorts on, not the Terry shorts with the thinner chamois...

I did a ride to a park about 12 miles away. On the way home had a flat. DH rescued me. Beside that little issue, it was a great ride and a beautiful day here in SE MI!!!!

I did a lovely 46 mile solo ride to Harvard and Bolton, for which Crankin had written out a cue sheet for me. (The directions were great!) Looking forward to doing that one again.

I did a short ride this morning--just 11 miles--but enjoyed every inch of pretty country road. I was trying out new insoles to see if they might help with a problem I posted about earlier in the week (clenching toes on one foot). Lol, no joy in that regard so I headed to my local Specialized dealer to consult the staff. Ended up signing up for a Body Geometry Fit session to get to the bottom of the problem (appt in two weeks).

Soooo, this morning's gorgeous spin was double the value!! I also hit my mid-year goal on the ride: 750 miles for 2011. Almost a month ahead of schedule! Yeehaw!

I overdid it last weekend, spent the week recuperating and ventured out for an easy, flat 10 miles this morning

DH and I did about 25 miles this morning before turning our attention to some much needed yardwork. The first 5 miles were into a wind, and I was just crawling. I couldn't figure out why I felt so puny. I kept asking DH to slow down. He finally asked if I was okay, and I said I must be a little dehyrdrated or something. Another mile up the rode, it finally dawns on me to check my rear brake. It's a single pivot Campy Centaur brake, and we've had a heck of a time keeping it centered. Sure enough, it was rubbing. I readusted it and then just took off. I was relieved that it was the bike and not me.

From there, we finally got a tail wind and DH and I took turns chasing one another at max speed. Weeeeee!

Now I'm pooped though. We spent a few hours planting flowers and this heat is a real drag.

Yesterday I rode 20 miles with a friend. She now has a second home on the Cape, so she isn't around as much to ride. It was good, but I felt guilty thinking that her new Ruby Elite is just gorgeous looking when my bike is perfectly good.
Today DH and I led a 15 mile ride for our club's bike rally. We rode there, did the ride, and rode home, so almost 42 miles. The ride starts out with a very challenging climb, and since riders choosing the 15 mile option are not always used to this, it's interesting. That was OK, since we regrouped at the top, but then one woman was on her first ride of the season and her bike could not shift out of the highest cog after she dropped her chain. I was a little miffed that she hadn't checked her bike's shifting before her first ride of the season. But it was my job to sweep, so I coached her through the whole ride, which was as tiring as riding fast. I was exhausted when we got home, and then we showered and went back for the dinner and speaker. It was probably the nicest day for riding that we've had this year.

Just a little 12.75 mile market ride this morning in gorgeous weather (70s and sunny, low humidity). I debated going back out for some more miles after dropping off our loot, but decided to take it easy as I'm planning for 50 miles tomorrow, and I wanted to rest a pretty bad saddle sore I developed recently from a few longer and sweaty rides. Fortunately, it started draining this afternoon (sorry TMI!), and is no longer angry, so I think tomorrow's ride is going to be much more comfortable! :D

I commuted, but had time to kill, so I did my long route. Then I rode to the store after work. So, around 35 miles for the day. It was really nice out, as it's been all week. Stopped by my lbs, where they threw stuff at me, since evidently people like to do that. I <3 my lbs.

17.2miles, 1hour 5min 34sec @ 15.4 overall average :)

Hoping for closer to 30 Sunday.

Still cutting my rides short due to extreme pain Left Sit Bone. Scheduling a full Bike Fit in the next month, and possibly moving up to a road bike from my Trek 7.3 FX(great bike-just not the greatest for 20+miles-for me)
I was going to have a bike fit for this bike(LBS did NOT offer), but I think because I'm averaging 100+ miles per week, it might well be time for a real road bike.
I've been strongly "eyeballing" the Specialized Ruby Elite Comp :)
BTW- Any one riding a SRAM Compact Double APEX ?? Any comments ??

Today was a hot & muggy 62 miles for me and DH. Probably about the same in store for tomorrow...only with cooler temps and lower humidity.

Ct. Dancer, my friend just got the Ruby Elite with the SRAM compact double Apex. She's a newish rider, averages about 12 or 11 mph, after riding a Vita with a triple. We encouraged her to get a triple, but the Elite wasn't available with that option. Bottom line is, she loves it. She got the mountain gearing on the rear, so I think it's an 11-36. She said the regular Apex was OK for the test ride, but we live in a hilly area and she needed to have the same gears as a triple, so she bought the different cassette for the LBS to put on, and she sold the original one on E Bay. She's a very slow climber, but she does get up everything with these gears.
Her bike is gorgeous (see my above post).

Rode a 10k time trial and 20k road race in the senior olympics yesterday. I placed second in my age group in the TT and first in the road race. It was the first road race I've ever done and it was a lot of fun. Each one takes a different strategy. It was brutally hot and there was a 15 mph wind to contend with but that same wind was to our backs on the sprint in. What a bonus!

The 5k TT and 40k road race are scheduled for today but there are thunderstorms moving through. I don't know if we will race or not. At least the storms cooled things off a bit.

It was too nice not to ride yesterday. Spent the morning cleaning out the basement and having a yard sale. We tried an "Honor system" approach, put out a sign for people to pay whatever they thought an object was worth, and a large can to drop the money into. It was very interesting to watch. We were putting things out there throughout the morning so could get a sense of what was happening. Some people paid more than I would have expected and a few others just took things without paying anything. We were not looking to make a lot of money, so it was actually fun to watch what would happen.

Anyway, I digress I did manage to go for a 14 mile windy ride in the afternoon. I started out tired form hauling boxes all morning but felt great riding. HOpe to get at least a 30 miler in today as it is supposed to be sunny and 70.

I'd be curious to hear what hill it is! That one hill in Westford that goes up from the railroad tracks and nursery in Nabnassett to Westford Center is fairly brutal. Spin spin spin for me.

Anywho... yesterday I did an easy 20. Today will be an easy 40-60. Depends on how I feel. Need more miles in my legs.

OMG, Reesha, that is Depot Road. No, that was not it, but I used to live in Tyngsboro, right on the Westford line, and took that road every day, to get to work. I would hate to ride it, because of all of the traffic from people using it as a cut through from NH.
The road is Littleton County Rd., in Harvard, which starts out off of Taylor Rd. in Littleton, where it is called Whitcomb Rd. It ends up on Rt. 111, near the Harvard/Boxborough line. I am sure you have ridden in the area.

30 miles commuting yesterday. Today was supposed to be a very slow 50, but my new neighbors (I live in a two-family "stackable" home) woke me up at 1am by ringing my doorbell repeatedly (I think either their friends didn't understand which doorbell was which, or they locked themselves out and needed me to let them in, but that's not my problem at 1am!). Then they proceeded to blast music, bass shaking my bedroom floor, until 4:30am. I put my fan on high and my iPod in my ears but it didn't block out the noise. So today, instead of riding, I'm on the couch with a migraine.

However, I decided I'm no longer going to get upset when my rides don't go the way I planned. Instead I'll take a well-deserved rest day and say next weekend will be better :)

I'm so proud of myself... did 50 miles alone at my own pace through West County. Saw a black squirrel, a very cute chipmunk, about 80 other bicyclists, met a fellow teacher from another school district and discovered that a locust invasion sounds eerily like light rail. :D

This ride, I was very careful about fueling throughout. Started the day with a 2 banana, 3 scoops of choco protein powder and PB smoothie. Also ate half a larabar, 1 24 oz bottle of orange sports drink, 1 naked green machine and a little lifeway mango lassi at the end. My legs weren't ready to be fast throughout the ride, but considering I finished feeling good after just 350 miles this year, I am glad :o

I'm going to do a search momentarily, but near the end, I felt like my muscles were tugging awkwardly on my tailbone area. Like my glutes are stressed and are pulling on a weird spot. Anyone familiar with this?

Also I think it's time to shop for new saddles.

Good job, and I like the sound of your smoothie! I need to find an inexpensive source of protein powder for such things.

When I injured myself last year, I had something that sounds similar to what you describe. While I am sure that different things can cause similar symptoms, for me it was my hamstring - it was tight at both ends and would cause that sensation before I actually pulled the thing (in multiple places). I am sure that you did, but did you stretch well after your sweet ride?

Also, welcome to the loads of fun to be had in saddle shopping :)

I did 17.5 miles at the local park, which was three laps around. My average speed was 14.5 mph which is my personal best :) I feel so fast on the true road bike as compared to my touring bike....what fun it is to go fast!

I have decided that the stock saddle on my Bianchi is going to have to go. I plan to get a Terry Butterfly, if I can find a white one.

You know, I've only been home about 45 minutes. I'll stretch those hammies good and elevate my legs. Thanks for the tip!

Part of the reason behind my wide variety of over-use injuries last year was that I never stretched after a ride - I thought I didn't need to do so as I felt fine...until it was too late and then my stubbornness kicked in and a bad situation became much worse & took me off the bike for something like 3 months.

My stretches only take a few minutes but they are very helpful. I stretch quads, hamstrings, and calves after every ride.

Yesterday was the Great Frederick County Wine Tour (well...I named it that!).
Some of the N2 Crew got together to ride up Sugarloaf Mountain, then on into Frederick County (Maryland) to hit 3 wineries for tastings, then finish at Mt. Airy for a HUGE dinner (ordered off the menu, but we really ate "family style" with all sharing dishes and not a drop of food left over - even the desserts!). After 62 miles and many hours on the road - we were pretty hungry!

Here are DH and me at Linganore Winecellars (http://www.linganorewines.com/), where we stopped for a picnic lunch and tasting.

Here are four of us on the road. The road started up high - where the photographer is - and arced down into a graceful curve to the road upon which we are riding. A few stayed up to take pictures, but some of us couldn't bear to wait, s the road just looked like too much fun to ride. And it was a beautiful little stretch of road. Fun stuff!

Here's the group on the road. After a friend of mine left, I was the only woman rider. Fortunately, the ride was relaxed and all about having fun, so I could enjoy the companionship and not stress about getting dropped from some paceline. That's me in the white/red jersey. DH is behind me in the black/grey.

Today's ride was just an easy 36 mile training ride through Rock Creek Park on the new/old Cervelo TT bike. Still learning the geometry and handling and trying to get some miles in on it before I try racing it at various Du's and Tris.

Did a relaxing 22 mile ride into Carlisle and Chelmsford, going up a couple of streets we never seem to go on. One of those is a very steep hill I discovered when we first moved to Concord, that I hadn't ridden on since 2007.
Dare I say I actually felt good for the whole ride? Our intent was to go slow, as DH was hurting a bit after yesterday's 42 miles. But then we had to pass a guy, so for about the first ten miles, we pushed it, slowed down in the middle and then pushed it again when we had to pass a couple on Lowell Rd on the way back. They were riding side by side on this busy road, where there are tons of cyclists and a nice little white line you can easily ride inside of. DH said "on your left, and by the way, you are making it difficult for the cars here," (there's also construction going on, they are building a sidewalk) and when I rode by, the guy was yelling his head off at us. After that, we had a series of angry motorists, who, I am sure were annoyed by this guy out in the middle of the road.
Here's a picture when we stopped for a snack on Curve St. in Carlisle...

Well...when I woke up this morning, I certainly didn't plan on riding 100 miles today, however that's how things ended up. Actually it was 101.5. I'm exhausted...both physically and mentally. It wasn't quite as hot and humid as it was yesterday...but was still in the low 80's when we finished. My DH got a flat, as well as the other guy riding with us. Somehow, I escaped getting a flat despite riding straight through the same pile of glass that doomed DH and friend. Must have been my lucky day.

I have been doing a weekend series with the Baltimore Bicycle Club called the Instructional Series. I thought it would be a good way to ease back into the sport after such a long absence. They have a good mixed group from expereienced, faster road riders to newbies that haven't been off of the paths and on the road before. I seem to fall somewhere in the middle of the pack I think.

Today we had a great ride around northern Baltimore county. Lots of hills on back country roads. My group only did 16 miles but it was a wonderful ride. Next week we will do the same route only make it longer.

I want a wine country ride! That sounds like my kind of fun. There's a loop outside St, Louis that starts at the Lau Nae winery in Red Bud, IL and goes to St. Charles, MO. Plenty of wine there! *begins planning trip to see Grandma* Who's with me? LOL

Today I did an old 20 mile loop that I haven't done in about 10 days. I love it when you can see massive improvement in hill climbing/long stretches, today was one of those obvious "hey look, improvement!" days. I'm more of a masher, though I do keep a cadence going most of the time, I prefer to hang out in the big ring. Hills are getting easier, I'm climbing them pretty quickly now and most times, am still in the big ring unless they are steep. I keep adjusting my saddle & handlebar placement, and for the last 2 miles there was a bit of a back ache but prior to that, I felt great. Hoping it's a strength building issue, otherwise, I feel ready to jump back into 40 mile rides again! Woohoo recovery!

Meanwhile, it was HOT... and my puppy thinks i am a big salt lick. Shower time.

Gosh, everyone's having a great weekend of riding! I want to do a wine tour, too!

DH got most of the mulch down this morning! Woot. Our flower beds look really nice From there, I took my mountain bike out for a tool around town. Then DH and I took our relatively new touring bikes out for 15 miles. We're still tweaking things on both bikes. I'm so used to my road bike, it's hard to get used to something heavier.

I did 12 miles today. I am trying to get my friend into biking, so I gave her my old bike, and today we bike down the Schuylkill river trail to watch the pro racers come through (Philadelphia International Championship.) A lovely six miles ride down, we watched the peloton ride by (Awesome!) A lovely six miles back! I think it worked.

52 miles today. Rode with DH (who did extra miles to get 70). Suburban to urban to rural hills with a nice stop at the ice cream store on the way home. It was humid and hot, started out overcast but soon turned sunny, so I was totally drenched when I got done, but I actually felt fairly good. I think I ate enough this time but may not have had quite enough to drink as I'd lost 1.5 lbs immediately after returning home AND having a large glass of OJ. I continued drinking fluids all afternoon.

My longest ride since my accident in 2005. :D

Finally got some decent weather to do some climbing! I went to El Dorado Hills to climb another nice steep one I discovered last month while looking for Boulder Ridge Road. This one is Marble Ridge Road. It has a maximum gradient of 16%, with a pretty consistent 15% section after the switchback on the first part of the climb.

I had my video camera recording as always, and got another dog encounter on camera. This one was more positive than the last one I posted here, where the dog escaped the yard and chased me near the top of another climb. This time the dog was waiting for me near the top of a switchback. He barked a little, then proceeded to trot alongside me until I reached the top of the climb. Since the dog wasn't being threatening, I figured it was safe to make my usual puppy sound. I slowed down at the top so the dog would be on camera again.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/90479831

Here's the video. You can see the dog starting at 4:52.

I set out this afternoon after cleaning my bike a bit. I noticed that my head was sweating before I was done oiling the chain (the back of my head sweats like 16 horses after running the Preakness, and it's not as if I even have all that much hair!)... hmmm... warmed up, didn't it?

Well yes. Yes it did. I rode some of my usual trails and got in 25 miles; should have stopped for water a little sooner than I did, not because I felt dehydrated, but because I was so hot, I sucked it down and swallowed some air with it. Which made my chest hurt. Which gave me the fleeting thought: Gee, this would not be a good place to have a heart attack. (My older brother having prodigious talent in the belching arts, he got it all; I am seriously deficient in that area. Having a bubble of swallowed air hurts!)

But I digress. It was sunny and warm; I saw a Great Blue Heron in the swamp, a turkey vulture hanging out on a mud flat in the Anacostia River, a lot of mallards, and a good number of red-winged blackbirds. Also bunnies and a turtle. No deer, however, which surprised me a little.

I was not fast -- 11.5 MPH. There were a lot of people out. I chastised only one person, handed out many many compliments to children who followed directions/paid attention very well (thereby avoiding injury, woo-hoo!), and managed to avoid running into any of the clueless parents. A good day!

I rode 27 miles today along the Springwater Corridor. I rode to a transit station, too light rail to downtown Portland, then rode to my destination. On the way home, did the same thing in reverse. It was overcast and in the 70's with a nice breeze. I saw a deer jump a chain link fence, walk across the bike path and stepped through another (different type) of fence! I've included a self portrait.

I took DD mountain biking again! I love taking her. She gets so perky and upbeat on our way to the trail and she's so proud of herself afterward. She had 2 big crashes. The first one she fell off her bike, rolled down and embankment into a swamp :( The second one, she was being so brave, she decided to tackle a decent size downhill but lost control and endoed at the bottom doing a face-plant over her bars and then bounced into the woods :eek::eek: Not something a mother wants to see. After a good cry and some reassurance, she was fine and managed to finish the ride with some renewed enthusiasm. Looks like this will be a weekly thing for us!!!!

I love this.
The first time I attempted a stream crossing, a 4 year boy, on a teeny tiny Trek mountain bike beat me to it. He crashed and got right up, which gave me the push to get to the other side!

So happy to see everyone getting out there and enjoying a ride on their bikes! We finally got some decent weather here in the PNW and I took advantage of it. I got two great rides in and the best one was yesterday's ride. I rode in the annual Peninsula Metric which starts and ends in Gig Harbor, WA. The scenery is gorgeous . . . the sound, the mountains (both ranges . . . the cascades with Rainer on the east side and the Olympic range on the west side). Weather like I said perfect! Gave me a taste of another great summer on the horizon!

Saturday I was hoping to get in a nice, long ride, maybe 50 miles or so. But after running 10 miles in the very early morning, my legs were grumpy pedaling the 2 miles to the farmer's market. (Strawberries are ripe, yippee!). So I changed my plans, and rode our new bike path instead. 20 miles, and the heat index was over 90F, so it felt like more. But fun!

BTW, the fred thread was making me think, this was a fredilicious ride... On my '92 Cannondale road bike, with down-tube shifters and toe clips and "dork disk". And I was not wearing my bike gear, but lightweight cargo shorts and tank top from the Wal-Mart boy's department. And yeah, I was passing riders on quality modern bikes, wearing the full kit.

Finally a nice weekend here to get out on the bike, although a bit too hot for me (close to 90). I did some hill work Saturday and finally, finally got in a longer ride Sunday - 54 miles. A friend joined me for the first 25. We headed West of the metro, past Lake Minnetonka, out to the rolling countryside and horse farms, to a gorgeous county park where we snacked and bid adieu, then I did more rolling countryside, ag farms, horse farms..., back to the park for another loop, over towards Medicine Lake and home. I can't complain about the heat too much since the dew point was at least low, unlike today - Excessive Heat Warning anyone? It was a gorgeous ride. Oh, we also had to slow down at one point for a big male wild turkey crossing the road, and then there was the squirrel who tried to kill both of us.

LOL...too funny. My head is the same. The back of my short hair gets absolutely drenched and drips everywhere. I've ridden with gals who take off their helmets, shake out their dry hair without any apparent sweat, and go. Truly an unfair genetic advantage they have.

Must have been a good weekend for everyone, what great ride stories and photos.

I got to do over 52 miles on the Centennial Trail on what was a nearly perfect day for cycling...the kind of day we dreamt about all winter long. Not too warm, clear... we could see each mountain range from different points along the trail... Mt. Baker, Rainier, Pilchuck and Three Fingers, and the Olympic Mountains. It was fabulous. :D

No flats, the only bad thing was a big fat slug being thrown up on my leg by the front wheel... major ick. Oh, I also dropped my waterbottle trying to put it back in the cage while riding...a skill I really need to practice more. :o I ran over it with my back wheel, luckily didn't crash or ruin my water bottle!

I'm cheating - but my weekend started early. These are some of the stops I made on my 23 mile ride in northern Michigan on Thursday.

What a great weekend of riding it was. A nice little 20 mile ride on Saturday, 50mi organized ride called Bike Boat Bike on Sunday and another 20 mile ride after working from home on Monday I ended up with 90+ miles in the 3 days. The nice weather continues this week although some will complain about the heat, I will be welcoming it with open arms.

For those who are not familiar with Bike Boat Bike, it is a ride that begins on the North Fork of Long Island fairly close to the wineries. We ride to Greenport where we take a ferrie to Shelter Island, ride around there then on the 50mi route take the ferry back to Greenport and loop the other side of the North Fork. The longer miles take the riders to the South Fork. We do not find that as scenic and nice as the North Fork. A very enjoyable ride on a nice day.

I am one already complaining about the heat. Just came back from a little 15.5 mile ride and at 80 degrees I was suffering the whole time. I opted for shady rather than longer, but the shady ended up being not so shady because of the time of day. Supposed to do a 42 mile ride tomorrow and it will be even hotter. Not sure, but I guess I have to suck it up and acclimate.
