Penzeys Spices

Well, we just got a Penzeys store here in Scottsdale. What a delightful place. I have never enjoyed so many different types of cinammon! But it is expensive, so wish I could grind it myself.

There's one in my city, and I like it alot. It's expensive if you buy a bunch of stuff, but I limit myself to a few spices every few months. They are so much better than grocery store spices. It's also a great place to buy gifts. It's the only place I can find whole vanilla beans around here.

There's a Penzeys near me as well, great place. If you're looking for an unusual spice it's probably there.

They recently had a special -- it might have been for catalog subscribers -- for a free jar of spice, so last time I was there I picked up a free jar of the sweet curry powder, and bought a jar of their new minced garlic (it's dehydrated, not a garlic salt), which really comes in handy when we don't want to mince whole garlic.

They are much cheaper if you buy their bagged spices and reuse your old jars. The bags usually have lots more than will fit in a normal spice jar, so stick the extra in your freezer or it will loose flavor.

The pepper grinders that they sell are amazing.

Penzeys fan here too... I ge all my stuff in plastic bags and use my own containers. I've found that using good quality fresh spices you actually use less spice as well.

I love Penzeys. They are a great company run by great people. I urge everyone to sign up for their catalog. It's free, they don't sell their subscriber list to anyone, it always has recipes, and frequently has a free coupon for something. There really isn't anything to not like about that.

The blends can be expensive, but the single spices are actually really affordable. Like someone else mentioned, the bulk bags are the way to go for things that you know you like.

My favorites are toasted onion powder, garlic powder, Hungarian sweet paprika (I didn't know paprika had a flavor until I tried this), Vietnamese and Ceylon cinnamon, Mexican vanilla extract, Dutch process cocoa, and ancho chili powder. And everyone should just suck it up and buy Fox Point. Seriously, it's the best blend. It's good on everything.

one of my traditional solstice gifts to all three of my grown kids is a shopping spree of up to x dollars (amount varies depending on our personal economy) at Penzeys. It is about 45 minutes from us, so we combine the trip to Penzeys with a lunch out. It is one our favorite traditions, both solstice and non whenever anyone comes to visit.

Since two of my three children will be here to help out after surgery in June, I feel another Penzeys trip coming on. Love their stuff, especially the various cinnamons and vanilla beans.
