View Full Version : Is there a better way to town than this?

I would never have never known about this path if I hadn't learned to ride. It's so beautiful - an ancient bridleway that is believed to go back at least 700 years and which used to link a manor house in town to its gateway lodge on the outskirts. It's easy to imagine horses and carriages going back and forth. Now it has a small hospital at one end and a new housing estate close to the other, but is still beyond wonderful. Traffic-free and wide, and a no-brainer alternative to the busy main road that it short-cuts.

I'd be looking for reasons to go to town! How beautiful that is, it looks tranquil.

This is extremely lovely. I do miss England's landscapes sometimes, though I have no reason to complain where I am right now, in the middle of the Alaskan taiga (spruce forest).

Beautiful!

Where in England are you? My daughter went to UEA in Norwich for a year and is going back to Cambridge for her master's program... and to be with her boyfriend, a law student there. I went to visit her last May, but only saw the area around Norwich and some of London.

I'm in Wiltshire, which is to the West, fairly close to Avebury and Stonehenge (Cambridge and Norwich are both to the East). Cambridge is meant to be be very cycle-friendly, and Norwich is very flat.

Thank you for all the comments. I still can't believe it's right on my doorstep, there's just a short stretch of busy road before I nip down a side road to join that path. It has turned my trips into town into something to look forward to.

Chryss, you sound as if you're somewhere very scenic indeed!

:D I need to set up a bicycle guesthouse so everyone can visit! It is very beautiful around here, I have barely scratched the surface of trail and off-road riding too. I grumble about not learning to ride until later in life, but in truth this is the first place I've lived in some time with where I've had the luxury of both time to ride and opportunities to do so that are right on my doorstep.

I put that pic on facebook too, and one of my friends has told me that there's a route that will get me there and bypass the busy first bit of road - hurrah!
