This afternoon as I was getting off work my husband called me(he never calls my work) and asked me what hospital to take our 9yr old to because she was in a bike crash. My heart about stopped. They were out Mt biking & going down a hill into a blind corner at about 18mph,she missed the corner flipped over the handlebars and fell down a 7ft embankment into blackberry bushes. DH watched it happen and couldn't do anything. He ran down to where she was and had to leave her laying down until he could asses her injuries and calm her. A nurse was riding by and stopped to help him figure out how badly she was hurt. Amazingly she was scraped and bruised and her shoulder hurt but that was about it. When she could get up two other couples walked their bikes about a miile bake to the car for them. She's so tough she walked that whole mile back (which is good DH probably couldn't have carried her the whole way). We went to the emergency room and got x-rays her collarbone is completly broken in one place and maybe another we will see an orthopedist tomorrow. I'm proud of how tough she is,she never complained while we waited at the hospital. She's sleeping now and I'm so relieved she's all rght. I'm thankful for the kindness of strangers, and for her now broken helmet(no concussion thank god)

So glad it wasn't worse! Kids do heal pretty quickly, so I bet she'll be back to all good in almost the blink of an eye. Scary, though...hope she doesn't suffer with too much pain. My DH broke his collarbone (also on the bike), and it was a long road back, but he was in his 40s at the time.
Best wishes!

how scary! A fractured collar bone is very painful, but they do heal (though mine is no longer straight). So glad it wasn't worse.

Any time your babies are hurt, it's so awful. Such a helpless feeling as a parent. Glad she was not hurt worse.
Yes, thank God for helmets! My shoulder is permanently seperated from my crash (&helmet saved me from being scrambled egg brains). Common bike injury by nature unfortunately. It takes time, but youth usually helps any injury situation as a plus.
Hope she heals well. (((hugs)))

What all the others said -- what a shock! And I'm very impressed with how everyone, above all your daughter, handled it.

You know, when she's 40 (like me), she'll be telling this story with a huge smile on her face - they day she was out with Dad and had this cool crash, what an awesome day and what great parents.

When I saw the title of the thread, my heart just sank. I'm really glad to hear that she didn't suffer any worse.
Tough kid doesn't begin to describe the girl. Broken collar bone has left grown men from being able to move let alone walk for a mile. Thinking about it makes me cringe. I've shattered my collar bone and believe me, the pain is excrutiating and to move? I couldn't move or even sit up. The girl is beyond tough.
I wish her speedy recovery!!
She more than deserves a bucket of ice cream. :D

Wow, what a frightening call to receive. I hope she heals quickly and that this accident doesn't keep her off a bike in the future. When she's older she'll have some cycling "bragging rights" about how "hard core" she was at the tender age of 9. Take care.

Thank you all for the well wishing and good thoughts. We went to the doctor today and he only found one clean break and no other fractures,so no surgery.:)DD is resting and mending. Already she's talking about how cool the crash was. I've gotten that phone call a few times when DH has crashed I just hope I never get it again.

Oh wow. They hurt like crazy. She's a pretty tough kid.:cool:
Don't be surprised if ortho suggests a plate for her clavicle. They can line it up, put the plate on and she'll be able to recover and get back to normal life quicker. They can take it back out later if she wants. It's just under the skin. It's so much better than walking around with a big lump there or having shoulder misalignment problems later in life. The surgery is usually under 2 hrs and most likely, around 1. I was just in one today. It really is worth it. She'll just have a scar running along bone length, usually 3-4" long.
Good luck and take pics of the x-rays for us! :D
