View Full Version : Share The Road license plates
I don't know if other states have them, but Illinois will soon have a cycling related Share The Road plate.
Would you get one if it was available where you live??

In a heartbeat! I wish MI would do this, too.

With any luck when Michigan does their plate... they won't do what Wisconsin did.

I don't have mine yet, but plan on getting one when I have to renew my tabs this year.
I gotta say I *love* the same rights, same rules tag line.

that's for motorcycles, is there a bike version?
Interesting that they give Harley Davidson some free PR

Not that I've heard of, the WI plate is a hot topic on the motorcycling forums I frequent (equal time, why not Kawasaki, etc.)

Well, the world HQ IS in Milwaukee and H-D-related stuff brings a fair amount of money into the state...so I will cut them slack for that.
I wonder if Harley is paying for the advertising... or getting paid for "allowing" their logo to be used?

Looks like they're working with the state to offer safety programs (http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/vehicles/personal/special/harley-davidson.htm) and people do pay extra for those plates...I'm all for that.

I'm in IN also, and am going to get the new plate when I renew.
I wanted to get a special custom one also. But, not excited about renewing the money early.
I like the IN bike plate.

That's pretty cool!
As I understand it, the fees in IL will go towards cycling awareness education. If I'm off the mark Geonz will know for sure, she's pretty involved with cycling issues in our state.

Texas has one too, it says "Share the road, y'all." (it looks like Lance and his yellow jersey are on it, too.) I have thought about getting one, but for me it's a toss up between the bicycle one and the animal one, which has a cartoon of a dog and cat and it says "Animal friendly".

Pax, I've had my Illinois Share the Road Plates ordered for months and still don't have them. As I understand it, they have to have 1500 people commit to the plates before they will manufacture them and that's the hold up. I can't wait to get them.

I bet once the weather finally cooperates and people can get out on their bikes we'll see an upsurge in orders. If I can convince my SO to part with the $$ we'll be joining you. :D

I am in Indiana and will certainly get one when my tags are due this summer. They had to have a base number of people to commit to purchase one before they were approved by the State, and I understand the proceeds will go for bicycle awareness programs.
I WOULD have gotten it early, but several bikes have been calling my name :)

I wanted to get one this year but the new registration for my jeep was steeper than I thought, so next year I'll get them.

I have the Utah one, but have never seen another on the road and when a friend asked for it, he was told they didn't have any. It was the same office that sold me one about a month earlier. I think there is so little demand for them, the DMV employee was simply unaware they existed.
I hope they catch on, any little bit of awareness would help.

Me too, Pax. I'd like to see them all over the state.

I've got the Colorado ones on my car, too. I just got the Bicycle Colorado newsletter and was actually quite surprised to see that there are only 5000 state wide - I would have expected more especially since they are only $25....

I've had my Texas "Share the Road" plates for a few years now. I wavered between that one and the Texas Parks & Wildlife plate with the horned toad, but in the end I decided to go with the bike plates in the hopes that even a puny little license plate might raise the awareness of other drivers, and possibly help to make cyclists a tiny bit safer.
