I just learned that I (and my supervisor) have been approved to travel to the TRB Applications Conference in Reno from May 8-12. This will probably be the one conference in my life that is so focused on what I DO for a living, and I love the high mountain desert - it has been about 25 years since I've been in that part of the world.

Do we have any Reno members? Are there bike trails? Are rental bikes available? We will be at the Peppermill Resort Hotel, which is apparently close to the airport. We have receptions the first couple of evenings, but I would like to take one of our evenings there and go biking or hiking.

Is anyone familiar about the area? Thankfully the hotel apparently has a very nice workout facility, so that will help me to work off that food I shouldn't eat but know I probably will ;)

I don't know anything about Reno. Could you call the hotels toll free number and ask them? They have a concierge, I suspect, so they would likely have resources you could get in touch with. Or you could googlemap the hotel and see what's nearby (use hybrid view) and often nearby businesses will be labeled. Or you could do a search for "bike rental" near the name of your hotel.
I'm thinking of going to Boulder, CO and that's what I did and found a ton of resources.
Good luck.

Good idea, I had spoken with the hotel and they weren't all that helpful Perhaps not many of their guests are there for hiking or biking? I will keep at it. Will also check with any bike stores that might be in town.

Catrin, there's a guy on RBR named Ridgetop who lives in or near Reno. Here's his answer to a question on RBR about renting a bike and riding in Reno.

If you post your question on RBR, I would assume he'd respond. Incidentally, I'd note he's one heck of a strong rider and great photographer. Search for some of his ride reports; they're pretty awesome.

Since you are a Surly fan, I'd start with the Surly dealer in Reno. Maybe you can arrange a "test ride."

I've never rented a bike in Reno, but I brought my own up there last summer and climbed Mt. Rose. It's a 14 mile climb, and at my weight back then of 185, with a 32 lb mountain bike, it was the worst sufferfest ever!

There's also Geiger Grade. I've never climbed it, but I've seen videos of a hill climb up it.

You will be relatively close to a brick and mortar Sierra Trading Post too! Whenever we go to Lake Tahoe, we always drive over to STP in Reno to shop - good bargains and a large selection. If you could get away for a day or an afternoon to visit Lake Tahoe, it would be well worth it - very beautiful! Tokie

I second that! It's gorgeous and well worth the drive over. We were there 4 years ago and rented mountain bikes and rode the rim trail around the lake. It was awesome!

It looks awesome Bike Chick! My supervisor is attending the conference with me and we are going to be so busy that it is going to be difficult enough to get out of the conference hotel for one evening to do some walking/hiking  Thankfully, unlike most conferences, this one is very focused on what I actually do and will be very useful. The fitness center opens at 5am :)

I've a fun bike event planned the weekend I return :)

I don't know about renting bikes in Reno, but Bicycle Bananas in north Reno is a great resource.

Here's a link for some road rides: http://www.pedalers.org/. Go to the "route slips" link. If you're into suffering, there's the ride up Geiger Grade to Virginia City or up the road to Mt. Rose.

There are a lot of mountain bike trails coming out of Rancho San Raphael park. You can also hike those trails.

We still have a TON of snow up in the mountains, so I don't think any of the Tahoe trails will be open. It's a crapshoot whether or not they'll be open in July :( .

I live in Reno and road and MTB. I can give you info on rides. Let me know what kind of riding and distance and I can make some suggestions.

Thanks for responding :) As it turns out, I probably won't have the time to really get away from the hotel for more than a few walks :( They are keeping us very busy, and my supervisor is also coming.

We will be at the Peppermill Resort Hotel - is that an area of town where I can go walking at night? I understand it is quite close to the Reno Airport...

I live in Reno and we are a huge biking community! Its too bad you won't have time to ride while here. If you have a free Tuesday night, you could mountain bike with my group of around 40 other riders. We have a different ride every Tuesday night on some killer trails around the city. As for the Peppermill, great casino, but not really close to downtown. If you would like some good recommendations for restaurants or things to do, let me know!
