When I put my bike on the rack at home today the front end totally seesawed up and I had to unload Fluffy before he would stay on the rack. I decided to weigh the stuff I had lugged home today. You guessed it - 13 pounds of textbooks, papers to grade and empty lunch containers. No wonder my average speed was a mile less!

Hope the percentage weight of papers to grade is negligible. :) Sounds like a great winter training method.

Just wait until the rainy season arrives and Fluffy gets all dressed for the winter. Then, ask V what he weighs.

I love it when I take off my commute bag at the weekend - I feel so much stronger :D
So what does fluffy wear for winter? Photo? :)

I'm not carrying textbooks and papers but I feel like I've got to be hauling at least 10 pounds of clothes, tools, gear, lights, lunches, cartons of milk for tea, etc. I keep telling myself speed is not the objective when I commute

Mostly I just add fenders to him. I've got a different set of wheels now. Summers I use 23s on them. But I've already switched back to 27s for the winter. I got two flats at the same time riding the trail over to meet Thom one night and decided wider and thicker was better.

Yipee - see I knew there was someone else out there who put milk in their tea. :D

The wheels don't roll without tea in the engine! ;)

ROFL - I even drink milk in my iced tea! 'specially those wonderful flavoured teas by Bigelow like the Summer Fruit!! Shiny!!!!
as for V's 13 lbs - so have you signed up your bike for the RoadBears bike club yet?? I think with 13 lbs of commuter bike stuff your bike would qualify.......YOU won't....but your Bike will! ;)

So how heavy's your bag, Corsair? Are you a minimalist commuter or a kitchen sink'er?

I prefer to be a minimalist but as the weather chills - I will NOT be cold at work so I'll be carrying sweaters along with turtlenecks in my backpack. and on the days I'm changing out jeans it gets even heavier. Last winter I had to loosen the straps to get the pack on! I probably don't wanna know what it weighed!

I just had to pull mine off last night and weigh it before I unpacked it - no milk in there ;) so it only weighed 8 pounds. I told myself to quit being a candya** and be glad I wasn't a teacher!

Sounds familiar! We went on some errands today with panniers (4 for my husband, 2 for me). After going to the post office (we got two heavy books we'd ordered from Amazon, in addition to regular mail), farmer's market, Performance bike shop, and the whole foods co-op, we peddled VERY slowly home (into a headwind, I might add, and more uphill than down, ugh!) When we got home, we weighed what we'd been carrying. Me: 21.5 lbs, Barry: 46.5 lbs. Ouch! Yes, it was a challenge, but we felt good that we'd not burned (pricy!) gas to do that, but instead burned calories (lots of 'em!!) instead. Now, time for ice cream! :D

Hope you didn't have to pedal back out for the ice cream!

Well we had it tough! We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and LICK the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at the mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife. ---Monty Python - 4 Yorkshiremen sketch
