View Full Version : A Day I Really Wish Could Have Had A Do-Over

March 4th was not going to be a good day. Our vet was coming over at 8:30 a.m. to put precious Isis kitty to sleep (see recent posts in Show Us Your Pets thread). She was still spunky, but the mouth cancer had just made eating too difficult. At 6:30 am my mom called. Not good. My sister, who is younger than me, only in her early 40's had a stroke. DP and I had been planning on a short get-away trip that weekend; instead, I was trying to book a flight to get to my sister. And trying to deal with losing my 18 year old kitty cat (she just missed 19 by a few weeks) that morning. It was all so surreal and I wanted to go back to bed and start over.
I spent a week at sis's, visiting her at the hospital every day and helping take care of her home and three kids. My mom is still down there. Long story short, she has made amazing progress and is now at home continuing her long, hard road to recovery. We have family care lined up until mid-May to go down and help out (my family, and even DP's mom are pitching in; brother-in-law's family is worthless); after that, we'll need to figure something out until school gets out and we can bring her and the girls home to MN for the summer. If there's any silver lining in this, it is that it has made sis and I grow even closer and, hopefully, she will stop neglecting to take care of herself in the future - such a mom, always putting her family first, to the detriment of her health.
Anyway, I sure do miss my Pooky Wooky precious Isis kitty cat-cat (yeah, I used to call her that :o):

Norsegoddess, I'm so sorry. I hope your sister has a quick and full recovery. It's good to hear that she has so much family support. And in supporting her, you are all supporting each other also.
Loosing your beautiful cat after so many years is heartbreaking. I understand how you feel. After 4 years I still miss my beloved old furball dog. But I remember the many wonderful years he gave us. They were going to put him down because he was older and no one would adopt him. We took him in, got him healthy and he lived another 6 years for a total of 12. Not bad for a 90lb German Shepard/something-very-furry mut. It tore me apart to have to put him down. We discovered he had tumors all over his body and in a few short weeks the cancer just took over and he quickly declined. I couldn't let him suffer like that. Anyway, he was so sweet and I'm so grateful to have had him for those years.
Your sister is so blessed to have such a wonderful family. And Pooky-Wooky precious Isis kitty cat-cat, that name alone tells me she must have had a wonderful life with you.:)

((((Norsegoddess)))). You have had a lot on your plate for sure. I'm sending healing vibes to you and your sister. I hope she has a full recovery and that your heartache lessens. I know how hard it is to lose a beloved cat. I bet Isis and my Sophie are playing together, along with all the other TE furballs.
Hang in there. Here;s to better days.

Wow - a bad day indeed! So sorry about your kitty, Isis. We lost our beloved Oreo at 17, one year ago this week. I know how hard that is, but you gave her a very good life.
I'm glad to hear that your sister is recovering and doing better! It's also great that the two of you are bonding - continue to take care of her, and yourself.

Sorry to hear about your sister. Hope her recovery is a speedy one.
Sorry to hear about Isis. She had the good fortune to adopt someone who loved her dearly and didn't want to see her suffer. She's scampering on the other side of Rainbow Bridge with all of the rest of the TE fur family. Be kind to yourself during this time.

Oh, that is so much to deal with all at once. We have a 17 year old girl kitty...I dread losing her, but she is really starting to slow down. She seems to be pretty arthritic and is on daily thyroid meds. RIP, Isis.
I hope your sister is doing OK, too. She is definitely far too young to be recovering from a stroke. Sometimes that's what it takes to get a person to take their health seriously. It took a stroke for my dad to quit smoking...but he was in his 60s, not 40s. He got away with his bad habit for a lot longer.
