I love reading about how people make it work. My hubs is coming along with the idea of being car-lite, but he'll NEVER be down with car-free. And it's harder in the midwest with such urban spread and little to no public transport. Maybe that just means we'll have to move to Portland, OR even sooner than I've planned...:rolleyes:

I like that! Thank you for posting the link. I'm trying hard to move as many of my road journeys to bike as possible, and combine errands with the car as much as I can when I do take the care. Baby steps at the moment but hopefully I'll be driving a lot less by the end of the summer.

I am looking forward to becoming more "car-light" when I move and start my new job in Maine. Right now I am working in a bunch of different places, some of which are 45 minutes drive from my house, and I am not happy with how much driving I have been doing as a result. A lot of roads here also are just not safe to ride on. In looking for a place to live when I move, my goal is to be within 15 minutes or less driving distance to work (for when I do have to drive because of weather etc.) which will automatically be a reasonable biking distance. The town where I will be working also has all the basic shopping etc. for routine errands, and I think the roads/traffic will be much more bike-friendly in general than here. I don't think car-free would ever be realistic for me--the major reason is the need to get to work in winter weather (assuming I don't end up with a place that is within walking distance) and another is that I just think it's too limiting. However, I certainly am looking forward to reducing my driving soon.

I would relate so well to these folks on such blogs....

One thing for certain, one's life gets really slimmed down even though cycling/car-free does require abit more planning. Hmmmm meaning remembering to bring stuff in pannier, etc.

But yea, more active living. Conscious living, meaning you can't clue out when you're cycling or walking around outside with the natural elements.
