View Full Version : American Flyer - other cycling movies?

I got this movie from Netflix, hadn't even heard of it before! I enjoyed it, though was surprised at the lack of helmets until the actual race. It was interesting how often the camera drew attention the the downtube shifters - but I am guessing those were the norm when the movie was filmed.

I am taking suggestions for other cycling movies :)

The Triplets of Belleville is one of my favorites. We found the DVD at Goodwill for $3.

American Flyers, a terrible movie IMO, had parts of it shot here where I live. I didn't live here back then though. Some of the race was shot at the Colorado National Monument (http://www.nps.gov/colm/planyourvisit/scenic-rim-rock-drive.htm).
Rim Rock Drive is a fabulous road ride. I've ridden it many times.

Oh, Catrin, that's one of my favorites. Especially since one of our friends was one of the cyclists that actually rode in the peleton for one of the actors in the movie. The beginning of the movie was set in St. Louis so they recruited local bicycle racers to ride for the actors and create the peleton for movie. Our friend was selected to ride for the African-American racer. It was a great experience for him.

Thank you for all of the recommendations. I already have a couple in my Netflix list - either for instant streaming or DVD. That $99 "internet media streaming device" I purchased from Sony has been well worth the money! That is the actual name of the device.

Catrin another option is the Leadville 100. I've read some of your posts where it sounds as though you might be intereted in some offroad cycling as well. I own the 2009 Leadville, and it's great! Lance actually won the race, but the truly inspiring part of the race were the people further back in the pack...some wonderful stories! Beautiful scenery and great history on the town as well.

Some great options for nasty weather days... either on the trianer/rollers or off!:p

Pity they don't have this at Netflix. I am going to see if I can get them through the library - at least the 2009 DVD before buying them - they sound great!

+1000 to Breaking Away. Have you not seen it AND you live in Indiana??? :eek: ;) Hey and it's almost April, which is also known as "watch Breaking Away" month in my family.

My brother rode in the Little 500 in his time at IU, I went to see it live (April) and is really something. My dad and I just were going through his awards from it...the great thing about that movie is that it's actually a sweet, funny coming of age story and not just a biking movie. But the biking parts are a blast.

I just got "Ride the Divide" out of my library. It's just OK, but an interesting look into endurance MTBing - an annual race from Canada to Mexico along the bike CDT.

One I haven't yet seen that's on my list is Bicycle Dreams, about the Race Across America. My job has me driving along the RAAM route in southern CO/NM most years, so I've seen participants and support staff a few times, and am always amazed at what they do.
