View Full Version : Sartorius stretches?

Are there good stretches for the Sartorius that I can do at home? In spinning class last night my right Sartorius became quite cranky after the first hour. It was not pain, but became very tight. Then I backed off, and it relaxed, picked up the pace, it tightened up again - pretty much the entire length of it. Arrrrgh! So I just relaxed and lightly spinned for the rest of the class. Things feel fine today.

I am pretty sure it happened due to the kind of exercises I did before my 90 minutes of spinning. I didn't do much in the way of heavy lower body work outside of two sets of leg presses - but I DID do a fair amount of lateral movement for my hips. I seem to remember this happening a few weeks ago - but I did not do so much lateral work that day so there was less of a problem.

Today I want to ride so badly I can taste it (before the storms arrive) but instead I am going to do some good stretching before heading out for the evening. I know of some good abductor/adductor/piriformis stretches that I will do, but didn't know if there is something else I can do that might specifically target that muscle.

I will be glad when I've more Pilates experience because I suspect that some of what we do there will help...

I did, and am :) Trying to find one that won't impact my knee... This one (http://www.easyvigour.net.nz/fitness/h_hip_flexorstretch.htm) looks good, but trying to avoid kneeling right now.

If one particular muscle is getting tight during a particular activity (sartorius during spinning) then it is getting tight for a REASON.

Don't stretch the muscle, fix the REASON.

I am back to my lower back extensions every 2 hours for a bit just in case I cut back too soon but I think it is likely related to the hip exercises I was doing just before spinning. This has happened before, I just forgot - it has been awhile since I did this. It does happen every time I do those exercises before spinning.

I HAVE noticed stiffness in the arthritic hip after spinning recently- but not after riding my bike - even after a 2 hour windy ride. Of course the body is doing a lot more on the actual bike... and it is getting close to the time to give up spinning for the season :)

I am VERY happy to report that the tight sartorial muscle did NOT repeat itself last night :D :D My gut instinct that it was related to the combination of spinning after doing a bunch of lateral hip exercises seems to have been correct. I won't be doing THAT again...especially after I had the same result both times I tried to combine the two. There was a period of about 3 weeks between each attempt, so I think that seems a pretty strong indicator.

My knee is also starting to feel better :D
