View Full Version : If you can get to hear Mia Birk speak...
Mr. Bloom

...do it! I just heard her today. Her story about the journey she's helped to lead in Portland is very interesting...and she's a very good and entertaining speaker! The road map she lays out for "starting where you are (in your community) and progressing from there" is articulated well.
For all I know, she's a TE member in cognito ... if so, WELL DONE!
She's author of Joyride (http://www.miabirk.com)...and has been referenced in a few posts here. She's going to be in a few communities represented here over the next few months. Follow the link to her schedule.

Oh! I want to read that book because it's the first publication from Cadence Press, which is the new publishing company that the Metal Cowboy (Joe Kurmaskie) started up. The Metal Cowboy is one of my favorite authors.
Mia Birk is SO awesome.
I heard her speak in Vancouver about a month ago, bought the book that night and read it in the next few days. Her story is a great story of how deep social and cultural change can happen. Not easy, but well worth the effort. She's really cool.
If you're hiding somewhere here Mia, I want to let you know that I greatly admire your work.
Thanks for mentioning this Mr. Bloom!

I had registered to hear her speak Monday afternoon, but I had other things going on at work that prevented my attendance. My boss and several co-workers did go and they gave a very good report on her lecture. I understand that someone was video-taping it so I have hopes of still being able to see it.
I just completed her book "Joyride" and found it quite interesting - both as a cyclist and as a transportation planner. If you get an opportunity to read it I highly recommend it!

Just noted that she's signed up for the National Bike Summit next week... I'll keep an eye out for her.
