It was really depressing to run on snow and ice covered roads again last night.
And wouldn't you know it, I managed to fall on the one small patch of dry pavement in a 5 mile loop! I tripped on my darn shoe-laces. Fortunately, I fell on my right hip this time (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=41489). I have road rash on my side :mad:
Anyways, 5 slow miles. Done.

My medical issue with a boil has forced me back to the treadmill :).
I haven't run in months. I did 30 minutes of walk/run/hill incline walk intervals today and yesterday.
Nothing hurts, but the running felt really hard, even at a 10:40 pace.
Back to square one.

I think I'll start posting in here. I've been plugging away at my marathon training schedule, and I'm currently in the midst of week 3 (of 16).
I did a slow (snow and ice) 5k on Monday and bike intervals last night. 5k recovery run planned for tonight.

4.5 miles today - moderate pace beautiful sunny day - temps in the mid 30's saw more people out that I have in a while. This weekends long run is 16, will be a new long for me. Weather is not suppose to be great so hoping can squeeze in. 8-1/2 weeks until the marathon:eek:

Checking in - I've been running 4-6 miles regularly but not in any focused way. Just enough to sweat off some of the chaos in my life, not enough to introduce any more stress. :p My only real goal at the present is TOSRV (which hardly feels like a goal at all, since I've done it so many times and it's untimed, but I'm well aware I'm not in shape for back-to-back centuries today, and working toward that :p). So I'm mainly just keeping my toes in the running pool.

8 easy miles for me today. Planned on doing all 8 early this morning, but a fresh blanket of snow coated with freezing rain combined with fog--well, opted for a shorter 5 mile loop in town on the lighted roads. I'll have to wrap it up with 3 miles later tonight.

I think I'll officially chime in, as I've started running again. So far, I'm doing between 2-3 miles of run/walk intervals, with more running than walking. I haven't gotten organized enough to actually bring a watch along, so it's all pretty loosey goosey. I'm running longer intervals than I thought I would straight out of the gate though. I'm just trying to get my joints and ligaments used to it.
I haven't run regularly for a couple of years now. I'm not sure I really should be running now as my PT cautioned against it because of the mild arthritis in my hip. So far, however, I've actually felt pretty good. My litmus test for my hip has been lotus pose in yoga, and I was able to stay in it without much discomfort on Tuesday for the first time in almost a year. The minute my hip pain begins to flare, however, I may to rethink this. I have no aspiration beyond being able to do 3 to 5 miles at a time, 3 times a week, although I certainly admire you ladies who are able to do long distance runs.

My ankles limit me as much as my hips there ...

Actually, I should clarify that my "lotus" is really just sitting cross legged. That's about as deep as I can go regardless of what my hip is doing. My body never ceases to amaze me. I'm really flexible in some respects and just not so in others, no matter what I do.

8 easy miles for me today.
I can't imagine writing the words "8" (miles) and "easy" in the same sentence. The most I've ever run is 5 miles. And that was a rarity, just a couple of times. You should feel really good about yourself, lime. What you take for granted, many/most of us can't do.

2 miles on the treadmill tonight, barefoot. I had a Spinnervals workout on my plan but once I got to the basement, I decided that I wanted to run, too. Since I didn't have my shoes with me, I just did it barefoot. FUN!
(I should mention that all my runs are done in barefoot type shoes, so going without on the treadmill was no biggie)

Thanks!
My recovery run on Weds ended up being a bit faster than I was aiming for. The windchill was close to -40  and neither I nor the dog really wanted to spend any more time outside than we had to.
Yesterday, I ran heart zone 4 and 5 intervals at the gym. Total distance was 7K (just over 4 miles) including warm-up and cool down.

11K yesterday on the treadmill at the gym. I don't mind doing shorter runs and intervals on the dreadmill, but I am really hoping that it warms up soon so that I can at least do my long runs outside. I run slow, so I was on the treadmill for 1 hour 25 minutes yesterday

I'll second that. I'll trade you some flexibility, indigoiis, for the ability to do a half marathon!
I did another half hour of intervals this afternoon. I mostly ran this time with a few pauses to catch my breath. At this point, those pauses are more mental than physical but I'm not kind ready to push through. It was windy out there today, and I'm exhausted from getting about 3 hours worth of sleep last night. We had some wicked storms last night. DH had to work the night shift, so I was alone. The kitties and I spent part of the night in the basement during a tornado warning. :(

Well, my long run was a fail this weekend. I had so much work pile-up on me Saturday that it was impossible to sneak away for too long. I did manage a 4 miler that, surprisingly, seemed to add more stress to my day. I have another super-busy week ahead of me. I'll probably have to ignore the "training schedule" and get in runs and trainer rides as I am able.

Awesome time, Indigo!
This morning was a tempo run, and I suspect there's something wrong with my watch, 'cause it says I was going fast. Like a 7:51 mile followed by a 7:56 mile fast-- first time I've ever run back-to-back sub-8 minute miles, as far as I know. And I'm pretty sure I broke my 5k pr out there this morning...
Could the strenght training I've been doing for about a month now be making me faster? Or is my watch screwed up? Either way, it was a good run, and it's a beautiful sunny day, lots to smile about

Way to go, indigo! Very inspiring. :D
I am running 3x/week, 2 shorter interval runs (probably 4-6 miles), 1 longer run (currently 6-10 miles). Today was snow and melt/freeze, wet wet wet feet afterward. Wore my Flows, they are chilly at first (especially those half-ice slush puddles) but once I get going everything warms up and the insulation is super nice. Unfortunately it means I can't wear them the rest of the day ;)
Glad to see everyone making it through the winter. :)

I did 4.2 miles on the treadmill last night. I was feeling quite good and tempted to go further, but I knew if I ran too close to bedtime, I wouldn't be able to sleep so I stopped at 9:40. Didn't matter. I didn't sleep anyway.

This morning's 5 miles took me past the LBS that is the most commuter-focused, and I had to smile at the big sign in the window with the current local price for a gallon of gas. And I have been seeing more commuters lately while out running-- but that might also have to do with spring inching closer!

3.75 miles on the treadmill today, plus some additional walking.
Is it normal to feel kinda crappy for the first 30 minutes, then something clicks and you feel on top of the world? Is that the fabled "runner's high"? If so, I'm feeling it! It's almost like clockwork. It feels SO hard at first, then gets better and better.
Come to think of it, I often have the same experience on a ride....

Is it normal to feel kinda crappy for the first 30 minutes, then something clicks and you feel on top of the world?
Yep. For me, every time. Except my period of misery lasts about 45 minutes. I think it just takes that long to warm up. A pseudo-famous friend of mine always says it takes one minute per year of age to warm up on a bicycle. :) For me that also applies to running.
I'm still running, actually back into a regular routine now. Next event is a trail half marathon later this month, then a 10 miler with that pseudo-famous friend mentioned above in early April, then a 50k sometime later in April and, depending on how the rest of training goes, the big dog at the beginning of June: 50 miles. I've been working with a sports nutritionist because between hormones, age, and training load I cannot get my when-I'm-not-running food right. No big results yet but I remain hopeful. 20 miler planned for tomorrow; it will be a good test.

Well, no wonder I feel like cr*p the whole time I run! I also know it takes me at least 30-45 minutes to feel good on the bike, unless I am going very slowly. At my age, that means close to an hour of warm up . So, I never get that runner's high, because it generally takes me close to 40 minutes to do a 5K and by then other things are hurting.
This is why I rarely do group rides, because they go out so quickly. Even my regular group who are mostly even older than me, do this. Then they wonder why I am always in the front at the end.
I think some people are just in need of more warm up time than others, Emily. Lately, I've been doing run-walk intervals, as it seems that mentally, that's all I can take. But something keeps me wanting to run.
indysteel
03-03-2011, 07:15 AM
For whatever reason, I generally feel warmed up on my bike at 9 or so miles, or roughly 35 minutes (I'm 41). I'm not aiming to run for longer than 3-5 miles at a time, so I'm not sure I've ever going to feel "warmed up," during runs, but that does provide a good reminder that I should ideally walk for a longer period of time than I currently am to warm up.
jessmarimba
03-03-2011, 08:57 AM
Emily, I feel pretty miserable running in general until I can do about 5 miles at a time. But the first mile or two is usually just bleh, and then, yeah, it all clicks!
Now that I KNOW it will all be easier once I can get to that 5 mile distance, it makes it easier to suffer through the training to get there, but when I first started running it was just plain awful.
I didn't do a very long run yesterday, but I did run up a hill that's about 0.8 miles of just up (4.8% grade?) at my old flat ground pace, so hurray!
Ambikes
03-03-2011, 10:17 AM
I will add my voice to the chorus - I absolutely feel much better after the first half hour or so of running. For my last half marathon, I actually ran negative mile splits for miles 9-13, and I didn't feel all that bad when I finished. That race convinced me that a marathon was possible for me :D
I ran a fast-for-me 5K on the treadmill on Monday. On Tuesday, I got a couple of immunizations, so my bike interval workout that night was only so-so. Then, I had to skip my run yesterday because I felt so awful from the shots (chills, fever, tired, blah!). I did another 5K on the treadmill today, and I'm moving my long run up to tomorrow because I'll be on a plane flying to Costa Rica on Saturday!

Thanks for all the feedback, running gals! I can run about 5 miles max, though I haven't done that much for awhile. I generally only run for about 40-45 minutes, so I'm only getting 10-15 minutes of the "high", but it's really nice when it comes!
I would like to run longer, but most of my runs are done at our work gym on the treadmill, and time is limited. I am not very good at outdoor runs because it's usually either too cold or too hot for me -- I am very much a wimp when it comes to running and temperature zone. I don't ride in very cold temps either, but I will ride in hot temps b/c of the wind I create. That doesn't happen w/running, so I get uncomfortably miserable too fast.
Don't know about the age thing -- I will be 50 next month, and blessedly, it doesn't take me quite that long to warm up either running or on the bike. :)

Funny that you ask, my husband and I were talking about that on our last run, we both agreed that for the first half hour it feels more like fighting your body and then somehow it's so much easier and fun. We were asking ourselves if your body first tries to convince you to stop, and when you obviously don't, surrenders and makes things easier for you. ;)

I managed to get in a 4 mile run and 2 mile run this week. I'm really short on my training schedule this week. I was supposed to get 9 miles in today but freezing rain this morning has made conditions outside too treacherous. It's supposed to warm up and switch to rain this afternoon. I may try and get in a few miles later today, but it won't be 9.
Fingers crossed I can get back on track next week!

3.75 miles on the treadmill today - .25 walking at the beginning and end, and 3.25 running in the middle. Was hoping to run outside, but it was still too cold for me (40).

Today was supposed to be a long run, 15ish miles. But when I got up, the ran was coming in almost sideways, and it's supposed to be raining and windy all day. So it was off to the Y and the treadmill... Only had the patience for 7 miles; Monday I'll have try to get up early enough to get in that long run...
For me, the first mile always feels icky; I'll start feeling good somewhere between 2 and 4 miles, usually. But that first mile, I'm fighting off inertia and the creakiness of impending middle-age.

Uh oh. Here we go again. Been off TE for a long time because I haven't been able to train and somehow felt un-entitled. Now I'm finally getting back in gear. Signed up for a half marathon. We had our first training yesterday, day after I got out of hospital after another Crohn's flare-up, so I walked rather than ran. But I felt fine, tacked on a fourth mile after the three we were supposed to do and went birding. Got some great shots of a pair of Canada geese going through their entire mating ritual   Then stopped by Trek's (my sister's!) favorite bike shop and picked up my old Trek (as in bike this time, I left the new one home in Norway) from repairs and upgrades. Now if only it would stop raining, I'm ready to bike commute for the rest of this semester :D Maybe this time around I can get in shape and stay there ...? Ya think? Naah, but it's worth getting there anyway.

I did 10 with my dog on Sunday, she wasn't quite ready for 10 so we stopped halfway and sniffed down by the river, and walked about 1/2 mile close to home to give her a break. That made it slower than normal, but I enjoy her company and want to do it while we can before the weather gets too warm for her. She also insists running through every pile of snow along the way, and stopping to smell the roses/dead woodland creatures/deer poop, which will get more annoying as I get more focused. ;)
Along my run, I saw a shirt, a camisole, and a bra, within 1/4 mile of each other. Someone was probably very cold after experiencing the loss of these key items.

I did my first 5k trail run on Sunday. I normally only run & train on the road, just is where I live. But have wanted to do some trail running. It was AWESOME. I had fun and my race time was pretty good: 32:18 (my best road 5k was 29:52)
It was small, but I was 28/67 of the women (top 1/2) and 4/10 in my age group. I could of been 3rd, but why sprint across the finish line when I had been running w/ another lady most of the way.
I really did love it! Plan to do more and find more trails to run.
Haven't been logging my runs here. On a new training plan for a 1/2 marathon in August, so mileage is low again. I'll be sure to post more as the miles add up!

I ran 2.2 miles outside today and didn't feel like cr*p. Well, I did walk a bit, but it was definitely mostly running and not short run intervals. Hips are a little tight, but now that I am working with the MacKenzie PT, I have a whole arsenal of stretches.
When I did the 7 mile hike in AZ on Sunday, I noticed that I love to run up hills; a young couple was behind us at one point and passed us (they were running at that point). However, we came to a climb and I passed them :). Then I noticed they walked on every little hill.
Guess all of that cycling and x country skiing helps. I really prefer trail running, but that will have to wait until the snow melts.

I felt like such a wimp this morning, resorting to the treadmill just because of a little rain and wind. It wasn't all that bad out there-- warm, and the thunderstorms aren't coming until afternoon. But then I was chatting with an acquaintance in the locker room, and she was remarking on how only the more hard-core folks were showing up at the gym in the crappy weather. Guess it's just a matter of perspective...

I got out this morning, before the rain came. Thankfully, it was intense, but short and is over now, as opposed to those just south and west of here, where there is flooding.
I did the same 2.2 mile out and back, which includes going up and down the 10% grade. I ran about 90-95% of it (more than last time). Not wearing my Garmin or doing anything else to tell me how slow I am. The goal is to run, starting out slowly (again) and build up my mileage and endurance.
But... yesterday I got an email that the New England ASU alums are sponsoring and participating in a Pat Tillman Shadow run. It will be going on at the same time they have the one in Tempe. Something is pulling me toward it; just to "do" it, with no thoughts of time. However, it's on April 16 and I don't know if I can do 4.2 miles in about 5 weeks. I know I can get through it, based on my pain and suffering in various cycling things. And, you can walk, too. But, I have done one 5K race (a very low key fundraiser for our local hospital) and it was torture for me. The farthest I have run is 5 miles, and that was 2 summers ago.
I am probably the oldest living member of the New England ASU Alumni chapter and I certainly wouldn't be running with all of those youngsters. DH doesn't run and I don't really want to walk the whole thing, either.
Opinions? Remember, it's the beginning of the riding season, too and that, in the end, is more important to me.

I did the same loop yesterday that I did on Monday. I felt okay, but I was feeling a little tired after what was a long week at work. I got through it though, and am guessing that I ran three miles plus a bit of walking. I'm not quite ready to transition from intervals.

... and it was a beautiful morning for it, warm and sunny. Very windy, tho. It was a 3k, my chip time was 14:49, gun time 15:08. Awards were given by gun, so I was offically 3rd in age group (but if it had been by chip, it would have been 2nd, by nearly 10 seconds). Ran it slightly faster last year, but a 20+mph headwind for the last third of the race took it out of me. But it was a pretty cool race to likely be my final one in this age group!

Crankin - I think you should totally do it. You have five weeks. Do you want me to come up and do it with you? I am doing the Clamdigger the next day, but I could definitely come up in do this if you would feel more inspired to do it! :)
I ran 8 today, after not running since Tuesday. I rode on Monday and Tuesday - not far, 10 miles both days. I ran Tuesday. Then Wednesday I didn't run, Thursday no run, Friday no run. Lame! But my ankle was a little tweaky. And man, I am stressed from work big time this week. So I waited, and I'm glad I did, because I had a really good run today.
Tomorrow, I ride 40 with the bike club.

A quick check-in. I managed to get in 8.5 miles today! For reals. Short of where I'm supposed to be, but much farther than I was even hoping to be able to run today.

Thanks for the offer, Indi. You might regret that offer if you knew how slowly I run. I felt very gung ho about it Friday and now, after riding 2 days in a row, not so much!
I am going to run tomorrow, going to have to be at oh dark thirty. I don't think I can take the treadmill for even 2 miles, so I am planning to go outside for 3 miles. I will make my decision after that. My hip/psoas is still very stiff when I get up in the AM, but the stretches are keeping it well under control. Deep inside, I know the running makes this worse, but no one is telling me to stop.
The plan is to run tomorrow, short ride Wednesday, run Thursday, probably riding both weekend days. I don't seem to do well if I run more than 2 days a week, which I know is probably not enough.

I can't read that and not tell you to stop. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! No one hears it but you. Why are you doing something that's making it worse? What is this accomplishing physically that walking can't do for you, without the pain and injuries?
I finally feel like I can join these threads!
I'm the one that was really struggling to run 90 seconds back in October and asked for help. Since then I've read chirunning (and everything that i can get my hands on) have dramatically changed my form, and went from a super motion control shoe to a racing flat.
On Friday I ran my longest run yet- 4.25 miles! I went with my dog, Tuff, and ran around a private lake not too far from my house. The first half of the run was really slow and I thought I might not make it around, but by 2.5 miles or so I felt like I could've gone forever. It's pretty liberating.
This thursday is my first 5K race ever. I'm pretty excited.

Red, I don't even sweat when I walk. Even walking at 4 mph. Maybe when it's very hot out. And actually I sometimes can feel my hip hurting when I walk.
Maybe you are right. Running helps me keep my body in shape...
When I ride, even slowly, I always feel like I got a work out. The thing is, I love to walk and hike.

Great MCAP! :)
Crankin, I don't know if you could imagine doing that but I used to use my walking sticks to take some weight off of my legs when running. I started out running like that (60 pounds heavier), I still do it sometimes. It takes some time to figure out how to use them correctly in the running motion but it makes a real difference if you get the hang on it.
Yesterday I ditched my "Making the cut" workout and went for a 5k run because it was so warm and nice outside I couldn't stop me from going out. It would have been warm enough for short sleeves and I was drenched in sweat in my winter clothes. You could even smell a little bit of last summer and imagine that it would be summer soon. (Sadly thats not true...)

I was too lazy to get all the winter gear on to run outside this morning; it's 30 out. I did 2.3 miles on the TM, including a little warm up, cool down, and 2 2 minute walk breaks. Last time I was on the TM, I could only do 2 or 3 2 minute run intervals.
I've decided against the Pat Tillman run, although I might do it as a walk (and I suspect i would run for part of it). I have 2 Saturdays I can't do any training before that date, as I am part of a bike workshop for my club and then I have a class the week after that.
Red, I thought more about what you said. The thing is, my hip hurts whenever... it's mostly just stiff in the morning and then gets better. The MacKenzie PT has really helped. I just need to make sure I continue doing the stretches. It's like having a personal trainer that my insurance pays for :). I am notorious for not stretching.
Running will never be my #1 thing, and I mostly do it in the spring and fall. But, I still like to be able to go out for 2-4 miles when I feel like it.

Had a crappy morning, was very frustrated with a few folks, went out and ran 4 miles...felt much better. Amazing how a run can almost always help!

18 miles on Saturday my longest run to date, fighting a little bit of a cold so tried to take it easy. Speed intervals today, 5 miles tomorrow then 1/2 marathon on Sunday. The following Saturday is 20 miles then we start to taper for the marathon - less than 5 weeks to go.

Ran 5K outside; 55 degrees at 9:15 AM.
I felt pretty good. I have no idea of my pace, except it was very slow; no idea what time I left. I walked .33 mile to warm up and ran the rest of the way until I got back to just past the same spot where I ended the warm up. The only walking I did during the run was when I took a sip of water, maybe 3-5 steps and at the top of the big hill. This run has a lot of downhill and I have to be careful not to tweak anything doing that. I spent the about 5 miles or so near the end of my ride yesterday in the big gear and sometimes that affects my knees or hamstrings, but they are fine.

As for me, I ran on Wednesday, but I felt really blah. I'd already worked out once at lunch--my usual weekly toning class. I had an okay lunch, but I could have benefited from a late afternoon snack. Lesson learned.

I'm in a recovery week and only running 2 miles at a time; hardly seems worth the effort ;)
Last night was my first 5K race ever. It was a really fun evening St. Patty's day run. My goal going in was to be a little bit faster than my normal running pace of about 11:20 per mile.
I was super excited when I got my time of 30:49 with 9:55 mile pace! Yay! Not too shabby for a girl that couldn't even run 1/4 mile without searing pain only a few months ago.
I had a lot of fun. I'm so so glad I've put so much effort into figuring out my proper running form.
I've signed up for a 4 mile trail race in a few weeks.

Holy cow! 30:49 for your first 5k??? Wow. I am totally jealous. That is fantastic. Congratulations!
Thanks guys. I was really surprised that i was able to do it that fast. I couldn't take a complete breath the entire race though so I've made an appointment with my family doctor to see if maybe I have exercise induced asthma. I'm sure I could have done even better if I could have taken a full breath!

That is an impressive time. I see that many of you have a race time as opposed to a "regular" training time. What was discouraging about the one race I did was my inability to push through the pain and run any faster than I usually do. I chalked it up to the 95 degree temperature that day, but generally my mantra the whole time is "this sucks, this hurts, I hate this." Not especially conducive to improvement.

I got out with a friend of mine and a friend of hers for a 4-mile run/jog/slog through the park. Fortunately flat, as it was my longest run since the Celtic Solstice 5-miler in December. With folks to talk to and pace with, it made it much easier to run the whole thing (stopped briefly at the turn-around point to shed a layer). It made me happy that I could still do that, however, as it puts me in a better mind-state for my 8K run on April 3rd.
When I got home, I did 10 minutes or so of circuit work (jump rope, lunges, Skier's Edge, chest presses, repeating), then went out and did 4-5 hours of heavy yard work (pruned back the butterfly bushes, and helped DH and a friend cut up and haul a large tree that fell in our backyard last month during a storm. We'll split it eventually for firewood next winter). Needless to say, I'm VERY sore right now and suspect I won't want to move to get out of bed in the morning!

I am thankful I got my long run in yesterday as it was sunny and gorgeous (although chilly) and today it is SNOWING! Yuck.
Got in 11 miles. Managed to keep a nice steady pace. My lower back, right-hip area started to get really stiff around mile 8-9. I did a lot of stretching, icing, and more stretching and icing to try and get things healed up.

Great job!
I got outside yesterday for about an hour of run walk/intervals. I suppose I should get more deliberate about my runs--in terms of measuring how long my intervals are and how far I go, but right now, I prefer to just head out and see what develops. I'm not training for anything per se after all. Yesterday felt good except when I was running into a stiff wind.

great job, sgf! and mcap, too!
The weather's been consistently good for running outside, and I'm loving it! Today was about 8 miles, in a pretty brisk wind. It was my longest outside run in the VFF's-- I've been wearing them on the treadmill, but my feet get too cold to wear them outside in the winter. It felt great, and I didn't stub a toe or anything, for once. Ended up averaging a 9:15/min pace, despite the wind.

Nice work, sgf, mcap, everyone who's chugging along :)
I ran the "First day of Spring Commemorative 12-Miler" yesterday (a race I made up) with my dog. It was slower than usual; my heart rate has been higher than normal this last week by 5-10bpm as I've been fighting something off. I was in Boston last weekend/week and did a lot of standing, walking, stranger-meeting. ;)
Otherwise, it's 2x/week intervals on top of the weekend long run (and riding and swimming and strength training, and eating and sleeping, and working, whew).
(reminds self to check in more often)
