Does anyone have a health condition? I love riding my bike, but I have MS, which interferes with how much and long I can ride. Anyone else struggle with health issues?

Arthritis, tendonitis, fractured back.... so far so good, cycling, staying active helps.

I was recently diagnosed with bad arthritis in my neck. I ride a road bike. Apparently there are nerves that are being pinched and my right hand goes numb & right arm & my back just kill me after a few hours on the bike. My century plans are fading away. Still no treatment, waiting for an MRI. Asprin, heat, cold, massage don't touch it. It's a nerve thing.
I regard this as temporary. I also have lupus and I refuse to label myself and hinder my progress. Sometimes I have to throw in an extra recovery day. So what? The point is - we are on our bikes! I also lift weights to keep my joints strong (lupus affects connective tissues.) The point is - we do what we can do - plus a little extra!
BTW, I told the arthritis doctor: "I'm 50 years old. I'm only half done with this body!"

Graves Disease (hyperthyroid). Biking just made me more dedicated to taking good care of myself and staying on top of my disease. It also helped me to listen to my body - I know when I can push it, I know when it's time for a med change, and I know when it's time for a break. Of course, some people told me I shouldn't be training hard for a mountain bike race so I just had to prove them wrong :D

I just have abnormal holes in both my heart and lung that keep me away from my first true love, diving, and exertional compartment syndrome that greatly interferes with running. I guess that's why I'm on the bike.

I went through a few health problems this summer. My doc's thought I might have MS...now they think I don't. My symptoms have vanished...only time will tell. But for the few weeks that I thought I might have MS, I did some research. Team Biogen is a cycling team that races off road and cyclocross. Two of the members have MS.
Check out their website. http://www.teambiogenidec.com/about.html and also http://www.nmss.org/team_biogen.asp
You might want to try emailing Lisa Peck...

Congrats on staying active and working past the pain!
It was so cool... there was a girl who ran the MS150 this past year... from Dallas to Oklahoma. She started a few days ahead of the cyclists... but came in on the final day with the rest of us lazy bums!

"I'm 50 years old. I'm only half done with this body!"
Perfect; absolutely a perfect statement. May I borrow it?? :o :o :D :D
Pretty please? It says precisely how I feel about being 50.
You hang in there, Dogmama! If you can't ride a century, you can ride lots of shorter rides. They will add up. You sound like a determined woman, not someone to give up easily. All of you strong women aren't giving up despite the odds. I hope you don't mind if I say ---- I admire ALL of you for continuing to bike despite the difficulties. I can only hope I would do the same in your place. \

Yeah, I have crohn's disease. I'm 29. I do well overall, but have setbacks also. I'm currently in a biking funk from it. I don't ride much at all right now, probably once a week. Ugh. But it certainly is a great thing for me in terms of dealing with the disease. Both physically and mentally. I know I've inspired other people with crohn's who aren't doing as well, which is a real honor for me. I've also used biking to raise money for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. I'm just happy to be on my bike when I can be!
Hope you're feeling well.
