Seat post question

My oh rides my Marin as well as me. He prefers the original saddle, the one that I had taken off and replaced with a WSD Specialised one. Would it be possible to buy another seat post and keep it with the Marin saddle attached, so that when dh wants to ride he can just swap the whole seatpost/saddle assembly? The current seatpost is a suspension one, I'd be tempted to put my saddle on a non-suspension post and his on the suspension one. The trouble I have with the suspension post is that the saddle has to be higher than I need in order for it to be the right height once I'm sat on it, and I don't always get the clearance right when setting off :o)

Would I just ask the LBS for another seatpost of the same diameter and height? Thank you.

Unless your current seatpost is unusually short or long, you probably don't have to worry about the length, but you do need to know the setback (i.e., is the center of the saddle rail clamp centered over the tube of the seatpost, or is it set back, and if so, by how much). You can get some wiggle room with setback by adjusting the saddle fore and aft on the post, but the new seatpost should at least be close to what you have (unless your DH wants a different setback).

Then, each of you can mark your seatpost with sharpie or a strip of tape, so you know where to set it when you swap them out.

Thank you, that's very helpful. I didn't know about setback, but it makes sense. I think similar to what I have would work best as that's what he's been comfortable on. Great tip about the sharpie, too!

You also need to know the diameter of the seatpost, to the nearest 0.2 mm. If you take the post to the shop with you, they can measure it.

A bit later than planned, but never mind. I took the seatpost into the LBS where I bought the bike and asked for another exactly the same but without the suspension. It has a slightly different clamp (only one bolt rather than two).

Putting my saddle onto the new seatpost was really easy once I worked out how to separate the two parts of the clamp. It's a good fit on the bike and feels fine to sit on though I won't get a test ride until dh gets home at the weekend.

Putting the original saddle back on the original seatpost was really fiddly. It took ages to get everything lined up and the screws tightened, bits kept moving. I haven't tried it on the bike yet, will wait for dh to get home so I can get it adjusted right for him. I know which saddle clamp I prefer now!
