We are officially starting our search to purchase a house. Hubby just got a pre approval which we needed before we could start looking. We have an idea of a couple of neighborhoods that we are going to more or less keep our search to, and specifically one that we always seem to come back to when both looking at neighborhoods (out driving around) and in looking at homes for sale on line. This is a neighborhood maybe 5 minutes from where we currently live, but has no HOA like this one does have. The roads in the neighborhood are easily wide enough to ride on, and there is a gas station at the corner of one of the roads into the neighborhood, so I could at minimum ride to the gas station if I needed to pick up something simple. I do not have anywhere near enough experience or endurance to even attempt to ride for here or there to the closest drug store or grocery store which are on a busy road and a couple miles from that neighborhood.
Now there is no way I could ever ride to work due to the type of work I do. Actually due to the type of work I do (merchandising, so I can put miles on the car) I really will need to get a new car in the next could of years, and really need a station wagon or hatch back and one with good miles per gallon.

Congrats on starting the search - with the market the way it is, you should have the luxury of time (i.e., things won't sell from under you) and you can be more selective.

On the car - I just got a diesel VW Jetta Sportwagen. I'm seeing 40 mpg in mixed driving, and couldn't be happier!

For the most part I agree. Although we had seen a forclosure we'd have liked to have seen, but it did sell fairly quickly. I know why though, it was priced at $164,900 in a community where that size house (large 2-story) sells at a minimum of around $230,000 even in this economy.

I'll add that car to my list to check out.
