so DH surprised me with an iPhone 4 for Xmas, and I am having fun using my new toy, um tool.

I'm looking for app suggestions. There's a lot to choose from!
Weather (there doesn't appear to be a NOAA app)
word games and puzzles
what ever else you think is cool. :)

My favorite apps:

New York Times
NPR News
Pandora (free "radio" based on themes or groups or songs you choose)
Relative Pitch (musical training)
100 pushups (oooh, exercise)
200 Squats (oh, no, MORE exercise!)
Netflix (watch streaming movies on your phone for free with Netflix account)
Free Books (all the classics, all free, and the option to read them on a black screen so no disturbance reading at night in the dark)
Louvre (the museum, just fun. And free.)
Patagonia (you can select sales, and even shop from the phone)
Tesla Toy (duuuuude, this app is AAAAAWESOME!)
Zen Timer (works great for naps as well as meditation times)

If you have access to a Costco, I really recommend an iHome device of one sort or another. (from $30 for a simple speaker/charger, all the way up to $50 for a speaker/charger/lamp or $80 for a stero speaker/charger/etc.) I have the basic simple speaker/charger, and plug my iPod into it probably more often than I plug it into my computer. My kid loves the thing, and will use it to charge in a hurry (since it brings the iPod up to full charge faster than the computer could).

Someone today told me she has a pedometer app, but I don't know what it is called.

I second the NYTimes - it's a little buggy but I read it every day
Skype (now with video chat!)
Paper Toss (addicting time waster)
Unblock Me (another addicting time waster)
I have a bunch of photography apps, including:
-Photogene
-Photoshop Express
-Diptic
-Pano
-Tilt Shift
Facebook (if you're a FB addict)
CBS Sunday Morning
Bump

Angry Birds
Pandora
Google App (allows you to search using voice recognition)
Google Voice (if you have a Google Voice account)
Camera Plus
Cell Fire (Digital Coupons, like for the grocery store)
Kroger (Digital Coupon app if you shop at Kroger Grocery store-- use this app to load coupons directly onto your Kroger Plus "loyalty" Card and you don't have to remember to clip coupons. Discount is taken when you scan your card)
Red Laser (allows you to scan a bar-code and it looks up the price online)
The Find (scans bar-code, but finds local stores near you and tells you the price)
Amazon (allows you to scan a bar-code and it finds the item on Amazon-- we're Prime members, so have found this useful)

Words With Friends - I've had successive scrabble games with a childhood friend going since My

MyNetDiary - the most outstanding diet/exercise log - geared to weight loss- that I can imagine

Imdb - for showtimes/trailers and movie reviews

Netflix - with a cable, you can stream movies to you tv or watch on the iPhone/iPad

Biorhythm - if you're in to that

FileMagnet - to transfer files between phone/pc

Multi Photo - enables you to email multiple photos from your phone rather than one at a time

Grocery IQ - customizable shopping list; can scan barcodes to add things to the list and then create a list conforming to your grocery store

What's Angry Birds? I'll have to check that one out. Zen Timer looks good for me, too. I have my Pilates list in the Notes that comes with the iphone. In fact, I use Notes alot for gift ideas, things to remember, books to read, movie list, birthdays. It's simple and straigtforward. My faves:

100 pushups
Livestrong (to track food)
Pandora
Public Radio
YNAB3

I will be so happy when I can roll over to Verizon, because the actual phone part doesn't work in many areas where I have to be.

<<cough, cough>>

I just downloaded Nike Training Club (http://www.nike.com/nikewomen/features/ntc?locale=en_US).
Oh.

Did a beginner strength class.
Thought I was in shape.
I'm STILL sore...two days later.

Okay anyone who overlooks this one is really missing out !
It's called RunKeeper. Don't let the "run" part steer you away. This app is awesome. It has settings for biking, hiking, walking, running etc. It also uses your phone's GPS to track your routes, calculates your speed/pace, distance, calorie burn, time. It has a website as well and the iphone app sends all your exercise data to the website. You can track all your data, recall your cycling route and share on Facebook etc., if you like that sort of thing.

Okay here's the best part.... when it first came on scene, I paid $9.99 for the "PRO" version....however during the month of January the PRO version of the app is FREE FREE FREE, not for a limited trial time, not for a limited number of exercise inputs... FREE PEOPLE ! Honest, I don't work for them, I'm just in love with the app

I second the Runkeeper app. I just started using the android version for my runs and it's really neat.

Others that amuse me...(plus, they're all free!)
Angry Birds
Fruit Ninja
Urbanspoon
FireDrop
Cut the Rope
Groupon
Pandora
Passometer (this is a free pedometer that's really neat)
iDork

Nothing it all. :)
It's just that a certain someone....who shall remain nameless...works for NOAA. ;) And, it appears NOAA is behind the curve here. Again.
Of course, you can do what I did with my iPod, and just keep weather.gov (http://www.weather.gov/) bookmarked on your Safari browser with your zip code plugged in. It automatically gives me my 7-day forecast just as quickly as any app.

And Tulip....isn't the whole point of a game to BE a time sink???

Mr. Bloom

My vague recollection is that the government offered a weather app...then an appeal was posted to get online and rate it or else it might lose funding...and the it disappeared about two years ago...

I'm on Android, but I don't really understand why I need an app to substitute for a perfectly good existing website.

mobile.weather.gov works just fine ... and it's what DH uses on his iPhone.

You can bookmark your zip code and put a widget with the link on one of your home screens.

(Android users, to get a radar loop, have to go to the regular NOAA site, NOT the mobile site. Also, you need FroYo (Android 2.2) or later to get the loop. IOS can use the mobile site.)

I have it - it's pretty good.

Here are some I use regularly:

The Huffington Post app is a lot better than the computer version - way less "busy"

Find Craft Beer - indispensable. It uses GPS to find the closest breweries.

Urbanspoon - finds restaurants with reviews (may be geographically limited. There's a lot in the Bay Area. When we were in Mammoth, not so much.)

Peak.ar - uses GPS and the camera to identify mountains

Star Walk - without a doubt the most amazing app ever. Identifies constellations. The iPad app (larger screen/resolution - separate version of the app) is spectacular.

So I started reading this thread and thought, literally, "angry birds, angry birds, angry birds." Then I scrolled down and saw....

Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds.

Tulip, don't get it. Biggest time suck ever. But it rules.

One of my favorite apps is Ambiance, which has diferent white noise sounds. Really helps when I'm trying to work, trying to block out co-workers, and find music too distracting.

Cook's Illustrated is great as well. Lots of free recipes, and if you have a membership, lots more.

Scrabble is loads of fun. Civilization: Revolution and Doom Resurrection are great games.

Around Me is good for finding different nearby businesses.

Angry birds is very therapeutic. When stupid annoying stuff gets to be too much, smashing animated pigs is a great antidote. And I love the sound effects.

So, finally, Verizon gets iphone. I wonder how difficult they will make it for current iphone users to switch. ATT's coverage simply does not meet my needs, and my calls get dropped every single day.

Ok, I will admit that I love mind numbing games and enjoy having them on my IPad and Blackberry. They help to pass the time while I'm waiting at the doctors office, getting my oil changed or riding in the car on long trips. I like to stay busy I suppose.

Some of my favorite apps are

Livestrong for tracking calories in/calories out
Weather bug
Pandora
Friendly for facebook
Boggle--so much fun. DH and I are always challenging each other.
Talking Tom--what a hoot!

Yes!! Those wanting to switch would need a new phone. My two year is up in June, so it doesn't make sense for me to switch to Verizon now for a phone that's nearly a year old. ATT (yes the network sucks, but I do wonder what iPhone will do to the Verizon network) will have a new phone out in three months or so. I'm hoping that Verizon also gets the new iPhone (iPhone 5???) when it becomes available.

I'm going to wait and see.

Yes.

My iphone is for work, so it's important that it actually functions for work. I work from wherever I want to work from--home, cafes, etc. I also travel a fair amount for work. Seriously, I cannot get a signal from one of the main places I work from, which really puts a damper on working. My calls are constantly dropped when I travel.

I was thinking the same thing. i have a Blackberry Curve that's about 2 1/2 years old. Like Tulip, I really don't want my phone to be a time sink. But then again, there are a lot of handy and fun apps. I'm a Verizon customer, and while I don't talk on my cell phone very often (like maybe once every couple of weeks), I rely on it rather heavily for email, and DH and I use the Internet on it a lot when we're on the road. My biggest concern is that when I've tried to use the "keyboard" on the iPhone, I've found it rather cumbersome.

The Android operating system is from Google and has its own appstore called Android Market. Developers may or may not write apps for both the Apple OS and the Android OS. For instance, Weather Bug is available for both.

There are a lot of brand loyalty preferences so to each his own, but one thing I like about Android is that it is not leashed to one hardware device so you can get it on many different brands. We're watch the tablet computer industry closely to see what comes out for Honeycomb which is the tablet computer OS from Android. I just happen to think that open source is nice because hardware manufacturers can come up with best of breed rather than being tied to one man's (Steve Jobs) ideas.

I am looking for a tablet myself -- I re-upped for two years with a really simple phone in May, when I found the only online stuff I was doing on my Blackberry was GPS, so I bought a GPS. I'd rather have something that's not tied to my phone, tho' it may end up working out that way... and I, too, would rather not be chained to STeve Jobs. That whole Apple design of "knowing what I want" never quite worked for me; too often I want something a *little* different... That Galaxy Tab might be where the "skipping the vending machine to put this in the jar" money goes...

Possegal, I'm like you. I just can't get my head around some of this. Thankfully, DH keeps me from living in the Stone Age, but it's a struggle for me to keep up. I didn't even have a cell phone until late 2006.

Thankfully, DH keeps me from living in the Stone Age, but it's a struggle for me to keep up. I didn't even have a cell phone until late 2006.I just about fell over when a couple weeks ago my completely non-techy hubby said he almost bought an iPad and then decided to wait to see what the next generation of tablets would bring. He knew enough to know that the 1st gen iPad was only a launching point for an early market share grab.

SK, I'm the same as you, except I've had my Incredible since July. I finally gave up waiting for a Verizon iPhone, and I haven't been a bit disappointed. I didn't have much invested in iPod apps, so no huge loss there, and I was having huge issues syncing my calendar with the iPod.

FWIW, my next door neighbor just got a Droid X and it seems pretty counterintuitive. She thought she could have me show her how to use it rather than RTFM , but the Motorola hardware makes it look a LOT different from my HTC phone. I'm not Ms. Tech, but I couldn't make heads or tails out of it just poking at buttons. DH (who pretty much is Mr. Tech) says that that's just a fail, at this point - you shouldn't have to read the manual.

For some reason DH got me an iPad for my birthday this fall. I'd never have bought one for myself. It is nice for travel, though. Typing on the screen is slow, but it's a whole lot easier than squinting at a phone screen and trying to thumb a phone keyboard, and a whole lot lighter and faster booting than a laptop.

Apps I use:
Starbucks (finds them in whatever town I'm in)
Comcast (tv guide - even though I don't have cable)
RunKeeper
iTrailMap (download trail maps from ski resorts)
Metronome
Minesweeper, Sudoku, and Solitaire
Free Wi-Fi Locator
NPR News
Pandora
Fandango
Falling Balls (game - these balls fall out of the sky, you have to tilt the phone to make the guy on the ground run out of the way or else he gets squished)

And I'm perfectly happy with games/time suck, since I get bored when I fly and I fly a lot. Someday I'll actually invest in an iPad.

You are all helping me understand - and glad I'm not alone. I love that I feel I need to state that I am smart, it isn't that this is all above me. :) Like I need you all to believe that. I feel like that dinosaur who says - no new technologies, I'm done learning new things. Seriously, when did I become my father?

When my older brother showed off his 'smart phone', I realized that the PhD in the family shouldn't have the 'dumb phone', so maybe I should pay more attention. Plus, I do really love gadgets, so it makes me laugh that I keep refusing to pay attention to the smart phones and apps and such. And of course every year will be THE YEAR I finally get myself back into shape. So I love hearing about the apps that folks use for exercising and tracking food. In fact just emailed some to my brother, as the whole getting in shape things seems to be a family-wide goal this year. :)

Why you might hold off buying a Verizon iPhone (http://www.newser.com/story/109512/why-you-might-hold-off-buying-verizon-iphone.html)

Here's the irony: I stayed with Cingular a long time (before the AT&T merger) because they offered a LOWER tech phone. Not so long ago, there were plenty of places in Appalachia that had analog service but no digital, so when I needed a new phone, I wanted to make sure it had analog functionality. Cingular was the only provider that offered one. Years later after I'd finally made the switch to Verizon, analog was pretty much defunct, and at that point their network had much better coverage than AT&T's. As much as I coveted an iPhone, I wasn't going back to AT&T to get one.

I resisted getting a smartphone for a long time, because I preferred to be able to take notes on my PDA while I talked on the phone. (I realize I could still do this with a headset, but that's still two devices.) I love my Incredible (my first smartphone) ... but it's got to be a phone first. If it doesn't work reliably as a phone, I don't care what other bells and whistles it has.

One other thing: it's fairly compact for a smartphone, but much heavier than a standalone phone. I don't ride or run without a phone, and bouncing in an elastic belt (or in a jersey pocket on steep climbs) is a definite issue. I could get an armband I guess, but I just don't like to have something around my arm that tight.

I have never met someone who has gone from Blackberry or Android or whatever to an iPhone, and then gone back, or even wished they hadn't switched.

seriously, you know people who've gone from Android to iPhone? Frequent switchers!

The big deal with the iPhone for so long was the big screen. They really had no competition in that department until the Motorola Droid, which has only been out for a little over a year. I would never have considered a Blackberry, even when my eyes were better than they are now.

I do wish that I had better integration with iTunes, but I get that Apple is primarily a hardware company, and they are not going to license iTunes to run on Android. That's fair.

I'm not an Apple basher by any means. I'm writing this on my MacBook Pro with my iPad next to me on the couch and my iPod in the drawer underneath it. But I have friends with iPhones, and ever since I got my Incredible, I have no more desire for an iPhone. Why, yes, I do, and now I have friends doing the happy dance because they can get rid of their 'droid and get an iPhone with Verizon.
Maybe it's just the kinds of folks I hang out with:) in our little bubble of a city here.
The big deal for me has not been the screen size, it's been the ease of use (a la macs in general), and the fact that I can dock it and use it like an iPod (but better, as I can stream things).
And, I don't like cell phones...did I mention that? It's definitely not the phone service that won me over, although it's been wholly adequate for my needs.
Santa Fe JUST got 3G from AT&T two months ago, and even before that I loved my iPhone. So perhaps I'm an anomaly:o

what problems do they have? I've never had problems with my iPhone and in many ways, it's more revolutionary to me than my iPad (I compare my iPhone to my old RAZR's and go WOW!...but I compare my iPad to my laptop and go "oh, it won't do that?")

I can't speak for her, but I used to drop calls frequently (it's gotten much better in the last year). Now I occasionally have full bars but no signal, if I'm someplace that has too many iphone users (for example, I was trying to get driving directions after leaving a Rockies game last year. We were in an area that usually has fantastic service, but the towers were flooded with people trying to do the same thing, so the map just never loaded).

My iphone has been invaluable for my work though. I realize that there are other phones on the market now that do the same things, but I see no reason to change!

OakLeaf
01-15-2011, 09:43 AM
what problems do they have?

Either there's no 3G signal at all (off the beaten path), or the network is so congested that they have to wait for literally minutes to, say, load navigation, Urbanspoon, or whatever, on a purported 3G connection.

I only know one person with an iPhone 4, but he says the antenna issues are just as bad as reported, and the rubber baby buggy bumper doesn't entirely solve it.

Interestingly, I have the iPhone4 and have never had the antennae issue...

Honest, I don't work for them, I'm just in love with the app

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/runkeeper-pro/id300235330?mt=8

CT do you happen to know if this app uses up data from your data plan? If so about how much are we talking? I'm new at the iPhone thing so I'm trying to see how much data i will actually use.

DH and I play Angry birds together. We lay on the bed and one person does the controlling and the other makes suggestions and we swap frequently. It's actually a nice relaxing time together.

I don't consider this time a "time waste". It's bonding. Lots of kisses and cuddles when we get past a hard level too!

I may be getting an Iphone after my Ipod mysteriously disappeared two months ago. I *think* it fell out of my purse at a weekly race but the person who could confirm if it was turned in has not returned multiple emails.

I definitely want to be able to add Itunes to my phone, I work in a noisy office and the music helps my productivity by blocking noise. I had an 8gb Ipod Nano, it was at about 5-6gb full. Do I need an Iphone 16gb or 32gb? Obviously upgrading my Blackberry to a 16gb is the most cost effective plan. Of course seeing the apps I know I will want room for the Itunes and Apps.

I am hoping to get the Iphone 4s because my friends that have it said they do see improvements from the Iphone 4.

I've got the 16 and currently have about 9 GB of music on it... more than enough for me of everything I like. I guess it depends on how much variety you want.

What I do on my iPod, I created a playlist based on my "eclectic mix" that only includes music with a last played date longer than 6 months ago. That way I have a playlist that's a manageable size for my 8GB iPod, and once I hear a song, it scrolls off the playlist and makes room for something I haven't heard recently. You could vary the date depending on the size of your library, the capacity of your phone and how often you listen to music.

There's also a setting now that automatically puts a lower-resolution file on your portable device. Used to be if I didn't want hi-res copies taking up space on my iPod, I had to make a lo-res duplicate on my computer and check that one to sync. No need for that any more.

You don't have to be a musician to enjoy this app. I'm totally addicted to Magic Piano. It's like guitar hero for piano, but for your iPhone or iPad.
-Bloom, Trope, and Air: They are sensory/music apps. I use them with my clients, but it's very relaxing to play with when you just need to chill.
-iFitness: It is very useful in the gym when I run out of ideas for strength training workouts.
-GPSLite: I use this to keep track of my mileage during rides and running.
-Whitenoise: It helps me fall asleep in hotels and other "strange" places.
