View Full Version : Toe socks in cold weather....

I wear Injinji toe socks almost exclusively for running and my gym workouts (which includes treadmill running). I have hammertoes, so the toe socks prevent my curled down toes from rubbing and irritating each other. When I have tried to wear regular socks for running, my toes almost instantly become tingly and numb...with the toe socks, this problem is all but eliminated. However, on days when I run outside in the cold...the toe socks just don't seem to cut it as far as keeping my feet/toes warm. They are a fairly thin sock...plus with the toes being separated in their individual toe pockets, the warmth factor goes down even more. I've tried the Nuwool version of them, too...still not warm enough for me. I need to find a viable solution that allows me to wear the Injinji socks, yet still provide enough warmth so that my toes don't freeze. About the only option I've come up with is wearing the toe socks like normal, and then wearing a pair of regular socks ON TOP of them. Would this work? Has anyone tried this combo with success? And yes, I already have covered my running shoes with duct tape to block out the cold air....in case anyone was going to ask. ;)

I haven't tried that particular combo, but in the past when I had issues with blisters on my arches, one of the recommended fixes was to wear two pairs of socks. I wore two pairs of regular socks - it didn't help with the blistering, but it didn't cause any problems, either.

I don't know, but it sounds reasonable to use a wool sock on top of the toe-socks.

I've had a pair for the last 2 years. Very thick and warm.
You could also try the addition of a thin layer of lambs' wool on the outside of the toe socks between the toes, and cover over with another sock. But you would need to experiment to be able to form a thin layer that stayed in place and remained loose enough to allow movement and comfort. Weird suggestion, I know. But it is possible. Dr. Scholls makes lambswool available in a small package. You can buy it anywhere.

Oh interesting...as I have a pair of these exact socks! You're right...they are thick and warm. I was also thinking that I could probably use any of the dozens of pairs of Smartwool running socks that I've accumulated (before I made the switch to toe socks). I guess I'll just have to experiment a bit and see what works. I wear Nike Free Run+ shoes, so I've got plenty of room (they "give" quite a bit) to try varying thicknesses.
