Welcome to 2011, the year of my getting serious (or so I keep telling myself). :)
Let me know
(1) if you want to join in
(2) what your weight is on Friday the 7th of January (or whatever day works best for you)
(3) what your goal weight is for 25 February - if you want to, if you don't want to set a goal like that, then no worries.
I'll post the link to the chart later in the week.
We'll do another 7-week chart to accommodate the short month. :)

I'm in. Time to really and truly change the way I eat and shop. I can't keep buying healthy food for me and junk for for kids. I eat the junk, it's just not working. I have to change the way the entire family eats. I guess it's time to lay down the law with the DH.
Thank you Posse Gal.

I'd like to join in. I kept myself mostly on-track through the holidays (lost 8 lbs. between Thanksgiving and NYE), but could probably use some extra accountability.
I'm starting at 226. I'd like to be at 215 by the end of February.

Okay, I've never done anything like this before but what the heck, it's time to start! :D
I'm in. Currently 180 with an ideal weight of 145, but it's been heading in the wrong direction of late, so I'll be happy just to see any improvement by the end of february!

I'm having a hard time deciding what a good goal is for me? I am seriously debating purchasing a scale with a BMI function on it to help me with this. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow for a physical just to start the year off right and see how the ole bod is doing. I would like to get down to an ideal weight what ever that may be. I tried weighing at the gym the other day and the scale wasn't working right, it kept hanging. It told me I weighed 165 which only puts me 10 lbs below my heaviest weight to date of 175 when I was wearing a size 16-18. So I really hope that scale was wrong, now I wear a size 10 which is pretty small for me and I'm a tad over 5'7. May talk to my doctor tomorrow about a good goal to shoot for.

My goal has been 23% body fat. I am about 24% now. I do have a scale with a body fat function and I like it, but it fluctuates with how hydrated I am.

I've switched from aiming for a number on the scale to body fat% as well. Last time I had my body fat % done at the doctor's office, I was at 24.5%. I'm aiming for 19-20%. I go next Monday to have it done again.

Count me in. I managed to maintain over the holidays which while I can't really complain, that was not my goal.
I've got 5 months to drop 20 lbs or so...
SO, I'll weigh in on Saturday to get my starting weight, but my goal for this challenge will be 143 lbs. :)

Okay so I have had disturbing news today. I'm MUCH heavier than I could have ever guessed. I think a good weight to aim for is 145. I have 19 lbs to figure out how to get rid of it. I went to the gym to check my BMI and found it to be 33%, OMG:eek: I am so upset because I ride and run so much. I talked to a trainer at my gym and he says I need to start a weight lifting routine and do more weights than cardio. The odd thing is that my heaviest weight was 175 and I wore a 14-16 and now at about 164 I'm a 10. I've been lifting this past month and feel like I've lost size. I don't know how to account for this kind of weight gain? I'm really frustrated right now.

I weigh 148 pounds. That's what I weighed when I got married almost 25 years ago. My wedding dress was a size 14 and my clothes were all size tens then.
Today I wore a pair of size 4 pants to work.
Welcome to vanity sizing!
I gain weight and lose muscle mass if my carb intake goes up, even if my lifting and cardio stays the same. I do much better on a higher protein diet - I aim for about the same number of protein grams as my pounds of lean mass.

I weigh 134 pounds today, and want to weigh 130 by the end of the challenge. I am another one that does well with a high protein diet, and with to be very careful with carbs...and haven't been as careful lately as I should. That stops today

Although I'm not in the challenge, I am in the same boat as Veronica and Catrin. My weight will stay stable if I eat a higher protein to carbs ratio. It's very hard for me; while I don't really eat "bad" carbs, I do love whole wheat bread, bagels, a glass of wine, and an occasional scone. Despite the fact I am still doing lots of exercise of all types, in the last 5 weeks or so, I feel like my body has turned kind of "soft." Since this correlates to the end of the outdoor cycling season, or at least doing longer rides, it's discouraging. My body needs the change and the rest.

WR, by what method did you have your body fat tested? Each have their pros and cons and some can be influenced one way or another by certain factors. It might be worth it to have it retested, by the same or another method, just to verify the results.

Do you mean the calipers or something else? You might do a bit of reading to see what factors could have potentially influenced your results. For your weight and activity level, your 33 percent BMI struck me as a surprise, too.
WindingRoad
01-05-2011, 01:34 PM
Its not calipers, it was a little plastic thing you held on to and it told you your BMI. I'm not sure I am taking that reading to heart any longer. Now if my blood work comes back with super high triglycerides then yeah I will be a little more concerned.

WR - you mean you used the hand-held Omron device? That tests Body Fat, not BMI. BMI is just a relationship between your weight and your height and it has no relation to body composition. Body Fat would be a % like you mentioned.
Are you top-heavy, by chance? Like maybe busty or an 'apple' in shape? If so, that might explain the high BF reading and it probaby is off. When I use the hand-held, I get a realistic number (close to caliper numbers) because I'm bottom-heavy. When I used a BIA scale (same device, except uses your feet/lower body), I too get a high reading.
Readings using bioelectric impedence (hand-held and scales) are highly affected by how hydrated (or dehydrated) you are and even where you are in your monthly cycle...so don't put too much stock in the actual number. Just look for trends as an indicator of progress (like have it measured again in a month)....
WindingRoad

Hmmmmmmm... well I am about to start my cycle so that could be part of it. I am about 3 days out. I am also a pear shape so maybe that is part of it too. I wasn't understanding the difference between BMI and body fat%, thanks for the clarification. And yes the reading I had was a body fat %.

I was shocked with a 157.2 weigh-in this morning. Up 3 lbs from last week which was also up 3 lbs from the week before! That's 6 lbs in two weeks!! I'm certain I haven't eaten THAT much, so I'm probably holding onto a lot of water. I'm finishing TTOM and I had a very, very salty meal last night, so hopefully that's why and I'll see a big drop next week.
I would like to modify my goal weight a bit - up to 145 for the challenge.
Thanks!

Again I'm stuck at 127, but I've scheduled a BF measurement in a Bod Pod which is supposed to have similar results to underwater testing. It should be interesting. One of my clients had it and I re-measured him using my calipers and the variance between the two was a full percentage point. However, he is extremely lean and calipers can be off by a higher percentage in the very lean and the obese individuals.

Sad news at my meeting tho, I learned that my meeting leader died on Tuesday of a massive stroke. She was only 56. I only knew her for 5 weeks, but I sure did like her A LOT! She had an amazing energy and motivated me so much. I'm so sad for her and for all my fellow meeting-goers that have known her for quite some time. :(
Each day is a gift. This is a somber reminder, but a good reminder that all this weight we are losing is making us healthier and giving us another day to live.

I'm not in the forums challenge this time period, but I thought I'd share this anyway.
I have 2 girlfriends with whom I am doing a 10 pound weight loss challenge. Each of us has been kind of stuck over the past few months, and we needed something different to motivate us. Clearly the "carrot" of looking better and fitting better in our skinny jeans wasn't working, so we decided to try the "stick" method.
To wit:
For every 1 pound we FAIL to lose, we have to make an equivalent contribution to a charity that we do NOT support (we each chose our own disliked charity). That would suck. AND, if we fail to lose, but instead GAIN any weight, we will additionally have to make a contribution to the presidential campaign of a certain person whom none of us want to see become president.
It's remarkable how well this is working for all three of us!
Needless to say, should any of us fail, we decided we will make our contributions in small unmarked bills so that the contributions can not be tracked back to us. :D
(BTW, I'm down 4 pounds in 20 days, with 40 days left to lose the last 6.)

I think I need to reassess my goal girls. The thing is this: my clothes are a bit looser now but my weight is staying the same. Today I was still at 164? I'm changing a lot of stuff at once. The weight training is definitely firming me up and I have been working on different approaches to cardio too. I'm not sure I have even been under 150 in my adult life, I think I am making my new weight goal 154. It's coming off like molasses, but at least I'm headed in the right direction.
TriGirl, how tall are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm still trying to get an idea of what to shoot for on this weight loss??? It kinda looks like we have pretty similar goals tho :) I'm 5'7.

TriGirl, how tall are you if you don't mind me asking?
Yeah, I'm short. Only 5'3" I *wish* I were 4 inches taller...
My ultimate goal is to be 140 again. I was once 120, but my athletics suffered when I was that tiny. I didn't have the power on the bike and I didn't have it on the run. 140 is where I feel the most comfortable and am able to perform at my best. I still have a long way to go...
Last time I lost all the weight I lost it too fast and it didn't stay off (I lost 2-3 lbs a week). This time I'm purposely taking it slower in hopes that it will last. My goal is 1 lb a week.
It's definitely NOT where the charts say I should be, but we all know height/weight charts don't take into account the athlete. When Arnold was at his Mr. Olympian best, he was considered obese according to the charts. ;)

I'd love to be a part of this. I last weighted myself about a week or so ago at 121 and measured at 34-27-36. While I am quite happy with the shape of my body I need to get off my lazy butt and tone. I have been making great steps to do this and have been doing yoga at least 4 times a week plus a weekly belly dancing class. I would like to incorporate more bike rides, but since I am not a seasoned rider by any means I am going to wait till the weather warms up a bit.
My real goal is to continue with the 6 days a week workouts, maybe even push to everyday as long as I don't over strain myself.
Here's hoping to following through in 2011!!

Thanks, Lime, Klesko, and Tri Girl. I have no idea why we'd gain weight except that maybe the body is holding onto water because of inflammation of the joints or something...Knot could explain better, I'm sure.
Still, it's frustrating when DH comes in from a long ride and emerges from the bathroom (where the scale is) to announce that he's three pounds lighter, taa daa, and looks at me like why can't I do that?

I *think* what happens during a long ride is two-fold. One is simple dehydration, the other is a purge of your body's glycogen.
Glycogen is how your muscles store sugars for quick energy. Each gram of glycogen also stores about four grams of water with it, if I remember my biology right. For about the first hour of a long ride, your body can pull energy from muscle glycogen, which drains some of the water as well, until it switches to the slower burn of the liver-glycogen production, fat-metabolism, or the dreaded ketone metabolism (bonking).
When you're done using your muscles, you'll eat a recovery meal or whatever, and one of the first things that gets replenished is that glycogen and the water that goes with it. It's like a sponge that soaks up water and stores it back into those muscles for future use, sometimes a little more than you may have stored before the ride.
I remember in the old days when I was playing around with carbohydrate cycling and heavy weight lifting, I could get my weight to swing six pounds in a day, and a glycogen refeed would cause my arm muscles to *pop* and the scale would skyrocket. What you're seeing is probably not as quick or dramatic, but it might be the same issue. Either way, it's not a reflection on true fat-loss or -gain, unless somehow you're taking in WAY more cookies and burritos on the ride than you're burning. Then you're on your own. :-D

I totally forgot to weigh myself today at the gym. I've been doing extra workouts during my lunch hour and I'm discovering some really cool mini workouts on my iPhone through Nike. Problem is, apparently my body is not used to this. I did a pretty hard ab workout today and I was lethargic the rest of the day. I actually started getting a migraine towards the end and had to leave my lab early. :( My point is I am getting REALLY tired after these workouts but I don't have but maybe 30 - 45 minutes tops to get something done so I like to do them full throttle. Since I am trying to drop a few pounds I have been watching calories pretty closely too and I think I'm may not be eating enough protein??? Can that cause a sudden onset of fatigue like this? I just had a complete workup with my doctor so I know I'm good there. I do take iron for slight anemia but have never had it drain me like this has? I'm relatively new to trying to increase muscle from resistance training so I don't know what the usual and customary amount of protein vs. carbs distribution is during a building stage?

It is a fine line to eat enough to keep your body fueled for a work out and to still have energy and also drop weight. Everyone is different, but for me, after a long ride or good work out, I eat a banana. It perks me up, gives me an extra fruit for the day, is good nutrition for the 100 calories.
I would say your body is wanting some nutrition.

227 even, although it flashed back and forth between that and 226.8 several times before settling on 227. Alas.
I've been using the iPhone app, Lose It!, to record my food, and I've been between 400 and 900 calories short of the allotted goal every day, which I'm not sure is good because that allotted goal is already set to help me lost 2lbs each week, assuming calories in-calories out works, which I'm not sure it really does.
I've cut way back on bread. Sandwiches twice a week or so, instead of every day (and sometimes twice a day), and I'm eating Greek yogurt every day with fruit, which is supposed to be healthier than regular yogurt, although I'm not sure why. I get Trader Joe's non-fat vanilla. It's pretty good, especially when mixed with pomegranate seeds or blueberries.
I'm also trying to increase my water intake. I should be drinking 115 ounces a day. That's a lot of water when you've got the tiniest bladder in Southern California, but I'm working up to it.
Thanks, all, for the support, and thank you, Possegal, especially, for doing these spreadsheet updates.

I shouldn't complain - I had a very, very rich birthday cake last Thursday (or a huge piece of one) and then a MASSIVE dinner on Saturday. This set me up for a week of crazy hunger, so I ate way more than I usually do and I skipped some runs this week. All in all, the scale is behaving as one would expect....EXCEPT that my pants and bras are all bigger and I am definitely looking leaner this week. It must be a 'shifting' week where things are moving around in there. Even my husband commented on it last night (me looking leaner)...so I really expected a better number.
Oh well - onward and downward...maybe this means that I'm due for a big drop next week? :)

OMG - FINALLY!!!
148.8
I have been banging into that 150 barrier for MONTHS now. I first hit ~150 near the end of the summer and today is the first time I've seen a 14X.X since then!! Phew...it's about time!!
I'm going to be extra dilligent this week so that I never see the 150's again. While I didn't make my goal for the challenge, I'm thrilled with the progress nonetheless.
Oh, and look at that...I'm no longer an Athena. Go me! :p

132.4 today. But the body fat % on my scale dropped, so maybe the strength training I've been doing is having an effect!
and way to go, GLC!

Thanks guys, I'm really pleased. Only ~ 15 more lbs to go to get to my goal!
Lately I've been using an image of myself in these old J.Crew jeans I used to have as motivation/incentive. Today as I was running (and thinking about fitting into those jeans!), it occurred to me that I might not actually have those jeans anymore! Tragedy! ;) I think I may have donated them once in a fit of 'I'll never fit into these things anymore' blues...

Not to derail the thread, but it has come down to three things:
1) Hormonal IUD removal. Removing all synthetic hormonal influences have finally allowed my body to act the way it should when I reduce my intake and increase my exercise. Now the results I get when I put in the effort, make sense. This is HUGE both mentally and physically.
2) Triathlon. Or, I should say, competition. I'm supremely competitive, so having something that I can do where I get to compete to test myself and where I can train consistently (ie, three sports to alleviate boredom and over-training) has really helped keep me on track. I think that biking would have done the same thing for me back when I first started riding but back then, my results did not match my efforts and I got discouraged.
3) Environment. My husband's age has finally caught up with him (ie, he cannot eat whatever he wants and still stay slim and healthy anymore) so he's more open to eating right and exercising regularly and that helps me a lot. And secondly, most of my local friends are athletic and eat healthy (and eating healthy in the Portland area is WAY easier than it was in Greensboro, NC) so it's easy to stay on track when I don't have others trying to talk me into BBQ or baked goods or the like... Plus, some of my friends are crazier than I am now, so no one is telling me that I should "stop working out so much" or "just relax this one time and have a drink" because they are doing even nuttier things than me! (you know who you are, Susan! :p)
I've also finally learned the importance of moderation. I will NEVER eat 1000 calories/day while doing 10+ hours a week of activity again. That was dreadful, not sustainable, and most importantly, not working. Now I eat a lot...truly. I'm currently tracking using weight watchers and I eat 36-37 points on average every day (my target is 29). I've learned that if I chose the right foods, keep my activity level up and I'm patient, then I eventually lose weight. The patience is the hardest part but I'm really, really trying to enjoy the journey and focus on performance more than appearance.

So I'm not going to post my end weight. My life took a lot of turns over the last 2 months. It's been stressful, but there is (at least in part) a light at the end of the tunnel and one MAJOR source of stress is gone. Knowing the challenge is here (and getting a gentle reminder) helped keep me from losing ground - and that's important. I was very ready to be able to focus on myself again, and that's a great thing.
Since a few things got resolved, I've been working out more (and my shoulder is *finally* starting to feel right from the rider who took me down at the MS ride last September) - just in the last week or so. I'm also training for a 50 mile mountain ride in June - I have not, historically, been a good climber. So, even though the distance isn't much of a challenge for me, the hills will be. I'm looking forward to it. For another month or so, just working on base - then on to climbing.
So....I'll be on board for the next one:) And thank you to Possegal who keeps us all in line and seems to have infinite patience with us (even when it doesn't look like we're checking in or otherwise benefiting from the challenge).

The chart is here to help folks in whatever way works best for each person. So no worries on not posting a weight for any week, or when you post it, or anything. Glad to help in any way.
Life has dealt me too many curves lately and my weight went up way too much. I was at the dr today about these stabbing pains I am getting in my shoulder blade and on the forms the one question was about weight - any loss, gain, etc. I sat there looking at it for a minute and then laughed and check no. The 5 lb gain isn't because of some medical condition, it's because I've eaten poorly and done one day of exercise in the last 2 months. No need confessing THAT to the dr. :)
And it is never a derailing to share with folks what is working for you. That helps us all!!

I don't weigh in until tomorrow at my WW meeting. I weighed today and I was 160.6. I didn't count points AT ALL this week. It was teacher appreciation week at school and I ate nothing but sweets, and crap all week. Oh well- it's out of character to eat like that and I enjoyed every. single. bite!
I'm proud of all of us! I think that no matter what happens, the fact that we're aware of our weight and are trying to change is what matters. Great job to everyone!!!
We're going to keep doing this, right? I have enjoyed weighing in here and reading about everyone's successes and setbacks. :)

You got it! Last year, the century sold out faster than we thought (3 weeks) and we got DH a ticket at the last minute. This year, the century sold out in less than 24 hours. As soon as I saw that, I registered for the 50 (which sold out in less than a week). Crazy! Had I had more time to think about it, I probably wouldn't have done it. But....
My current motivation is thinking about how many pounds I can *not* have to haul up hill by then. Hopefully.
The century is HARD. DH (who you may recall likes mountains) finished very near the bottom of the pack (with 10 minutes to spare). But, he only got his ticket 3 weeks before hand. I think the 50 is more than enough for me this year. I *might* try the century next year. Maybe.
Congrats to you!!! You're doing great!!

Good for you klesko! I'll be 50 in April as well and will be planning a most excellent birthday ride (though it won't be on the exact day as my b-day falls on a Thurs. this year. Though if the weather is perfect, I may take a vacation day to play! :p

Late again. Sorry about that. I spent the beginning of the week fighting a sinus infection and the end of it playing catch up.

On a side note, I keep track of my rides and weight on MapMyRide - I do like that website. I was looking at my data from last August and noted that I am only 3.4 pounds heavier now than I was THEN. In August I rode over 500 miles on the actual bike (I do not count spinning miles during the riding season). Considering the kind of winter we had, and my quite protracted recovery period, well, I can't complain about my weight, can I?

Well my results on paper for February aren't too impressive but honestly with my tape measure and jeans, I'm happy. I've only lost 4 lbs but I have shrunk a half inch in my waist and an inch and a half in my hips. Of course my quads, at the lower part of my legs have bulked now my almost a full inch on each leg. Took my resting heart rate 3X because I had to make sure, and it was 42. Oh, and my abs have decided to come out of winter blubber hibernation.:)

Absolutely not Catrin, you are doing extremely well being out with an injury for as long as you have been. My very good friend who does roller derby she has been out now for about 7 months and she has had a REALLY hard time keeping her weight down. You are doing great.:)
