I know that Nook has had this capability for a long time. Has anyone tried this? I have books I'd be glad to lend now that this is possible. I bought Miles from Nowhere right after I got the Kindle. If someone with a Kindle would like to read it, I'd be glad to lend it to you.

I believe some of the big city major public library systems have gotten into virtual book access, even Kindle lending on a limited access. Check with your local library....and ask. If public demand is there, they will look into it even though their budgets will be tight. Express your desires and requests....and do it in writing will make a bigger impact.
I haven't looked into this deeply but I am a librarian (engineering and law, never have been a public librarian for novels, etc.) and hang out among the Internet forums/circles for professional librarians and library managers.

This is more that you can lend the books you've bought for your Kindle to other Kindle users, if the publisher of the book allows it, only once, and for only 14 days. Not great, but still something. Kindle still doesn't support epub, which is what OverDrive uses for library e-lending.

Has anyone used any of the third party apps that are supposed to convert .epub documents to a format that the Kindle can read?

There is some information here (http://kindleworld.blogspot.com/2009/08/million-free-google-books-in-epub-for.html), and here (http://www.the-digital-reader.com/2010/09/16/how-to-read-epub-on-your-kindle/). Both links are from 2010, apparently there have been unofficial approaches to this since at least 2008 - the oldest link that I found. I've been told that the method on the first link works pretty well by a friend who uses the Kindle. We were discussing this just the other day as I was debating the Sony Reader vs the Kindle...
