Apparently it is a fairly rare thing for us to get snow here in Jacksonville, NC. At least that is what I've been told. I grew up in Ohio, and lived the past 10 years in Charlotte, NC where we had at least a small amount of snow every year. We got around 3/4 of an inch.

I'll trade you your 3/4" for the almost 2' we're expecting. Tried to walk Chloe earlier (who loves snorking through the snow) but with the wind along with the snow, she looked like the Abominable Snow Dog in just a few minutes and bolted for the door to be let back in.

This is crazy. We have over a foot in Upstate NY. I'm so glad I asked for cross country skis for Christmas!

It was funny reading an article in the paper on line yesterday about all the locals (those who have always lived here) running to whatever stores were open yesterday (mostly gas stations) to buy milk because of the possibility of snow. Apparently some of the Marines thought it was funny too since two of them were interviewed for the article and couldn't believe it. The roads weren't bad at all, they were only wet, yet people who don't see snow are afraid of them. Now tomorrow morning will be another story as I am sure they will ice up over night. There is very little equipment here to deal with snow or ice. I've seen one salt truck and I would be surprised if there city had a snow plow.
I enjoyed the snow today, but my idea is if it has to be this cold at least let me have a small bit of snow. I just don't like the cold and don't like the snow on the ground for 5 months a year.

I watched on FaceBook as all my southern friends posted with excitement about the possibility of a white Christmas...and I'm thinking " gee, it's a certainty for me...and after two weeks of it, I'm ready for it to all melt!"

Alas, 50's and rain by the end of the week:D

AND, the days are getting longer!

We have about a foot so far. The wind is blowing ferociously, although it is not that cold (28 F) out. I think we're in a lull, though. Looking at the radar, it appears more snow is coming. Thankfully, it's snowing up north, so I will have snow to x country ski on when I go to Jackson, NH on Thursday.
I haven't heard a snow plow on my street yet, which is quite unusual, since it's a hill and is kept well plowed, sanded, and salted. I guess because school isn't in session, they aren't in a rush. I have always wanted to ski down my street, and I might just get to do it today, if I can get my azz out the door before the plows. Otherwise, I will hike down the street to the trail and ski there.

Well, apparently h*ll has frozen over because I officially have a snow day today. My agency never closes down due to weather but did so today.
My car is plowed in (thanks plow dude!) and it's going to take a while to dig it out (there's over a foot of snow and it's still coming down).

When I brought Chloe out this morning all you could see was part of her tail slicing through the snow . Kind of freaked her out. :(

It's been a crazy December here in KY, very cold and snowy. We got about 4 inches of snow on Christmas Eve; made for a very pretty morning! But I'm getting sick of wearing long underwear all the time....

But it's looking to be in the 50's for New Year's eve/day and everyone's excited

The snowmen that we built in the garden a few days before Christmas are just starting to melt now. The thaw is set to continue for a few days, and I'm hoping to be back on the bike at the end of the week. I'd love to squeeze in one more ride before the end of 2010.

Stay warm and stay safe everyone in snow.

Looks like we ended up with about 2 feet of snow all said and done. Now we have a wicked wind blowing it all around.

Yeah... i think that was the first and only white Christmas in SC. It just made more homesick (originally from MN). My bf looked at the weather maps on Christmas and just said that the whole east coast was in one big storm system.

Its true though, when in snows in the south, people run out to buy milk and bread. Why? I have no idea. Wouldn't you think that you should buy non perishable foods? Canned things?

When it snows down here I'm more terrified of the stupid drivers who don't know how to drive in the snow and still have "summer" tires on their cars. Last year a stupid truck driver jackknived on a bridge one exit south of Hendersonville, NC and I was stuck on the freeway for three hours. Missed my reservation at the Biltmore. I was NOT happy.

About 22" here, and cold. 15F right now, and also this morning when I walked a mile into town and back to open and man the food pantry. Looking forward to the same tomorrow...my car is still buried.

We lived in J ville for three years. One year we had about 8" of snow for Christmas eve. Onslow county shut down for 4 days. At that point they only had one country snow plough plus a couple of hum vees with tractor blades lashed on. It took them that long just to clear the roads enough for people to get to the grocery store. Perhpas some on the people in the grocery stores remember that. Even in Boston we used to see the clear the shops of bread, chips, soda and milk. Around here the same phenomenon occurs every time they think a hurricane might come withing a few hundred miles.

Thing is the roads never had any accumulation on them at all. You mean to tell me people wouldn't drive over a small amount of snow? As long as there isn't any ice under snow isn't an issue to drive on. I learned how to drive in the snow before learning how to drive on dry roads. I've driven on that much snow in a car before, then again I also drove through a white out to get home from college one day. The same happens in the Charlotte area as well and they have several snow plows and a bunch of salt trucks. I will never understand this phenomenon. I also don't get it with the hurricanes either, and this summer is the closest I've ever actually been to one of those.

I think this is the most snow sc has seen in the past 20 years. I had some people up the street ask me how to make a snowman with fluffy snow! (Spraybottle.) My bf couldn't get out of our driveway today. So we have a nice day off of work together.

...You mean to tell me people wouldn't drive over a small amount of snow? ...

Yes. You may have learned to drive in snow, but those of us who grew up in the south mostly did not. When it snows, we stay home. Most of central and eastern North Carolina get more ice than snow anyways, and NO ONE should drive on the ice.

If there's no need to go out, why go out? When in Rome...

My mother in Asheville has over a foot now. In my part of the world, it's supposed to start tonight but mostly be ice. I'm going out before it starts to get food for my dog. But I will not be going out once it starts.

I drove south down to Florida the day after Christmas - it was a long snow covered drive all the way trough south carolina. It was surreal. Then the temps were getting down in the 30s at night camping in the everglades.

Yes, it's quite rare in Jacksonville (NC)! My brother sent snow photos from Wilmington today, where it's even rarer. We got just a dusting here in Chapel Hill, farther north and west. Strange snow event!

Edited to say - sorry, I didn't realize this was an old post. But today was a bit of a repeat as southern NC (both SE and SW) got more snow than we did farther north!

We just got snow here today, too. What's odd is that it's our first snow of the season. We usually get our first snow well before the first of the year. I think we ended up with around 4 inches. It's a beautiful fluffy snow. I took my dog to the park early this morning and she really had a blast. Here she'd just finished plowing around and pulled her nose out of the snow . . . (she's a little camera shy but she'd been running around with her nose in the snow, nearly up to her eyes . . . )

Tulip, living in the Northeast made me very cynical about this "knowing how to drive in snow" business. What people mainly know how to do is wait till their street is plowed. And quite a few people drive very, very, very badly in snow.

I grew up in the South and I drive far better in snow than most of them. Of course, my parents did believe in going to the mountains when it snowed, so I got a bit of practice! Nonetheless, there is no real mystery to driving in snow.

Ice is another matter entirely, of course, and in my experience, ice storms are commoner in the South.

Indeed! Iced in today in Chapel Hill...glad I can work from home. I have no interest in driving on ice.

We returned yesterday from snow country in the Rockies -- methinks it's around -25 degrees C or -13 degrees F. tonight.

Some snowfluffies in a few days. Doesn't matter. It's the 'cold' that gets me.

I cancelled dinner with some friends this evening 'cause it was a 45 min drive either way. I like driving in the snow and have awd, so it's not bad - I just don't trust all the other idiots on the road to not careen into me and decided it wasn't worth risking.

I understand that one. I was leaving the gym last night and some ding-wing in front of me didn't understand you can't gun your car on a hill in the slick snow and not slide, geez. They spun out and ended up against almost touching the hillside, lol. I was kinda amused actually :D.

12 inches and the snow is still a-flying.
I home sick today, but it's not a clinic day for me. Things have changed around here in the past 20 years. Businesses all seem to pretty much close or not expect employees to risk their lives on the road. Perhaps with the advent of telecommuting, people realize you can actually get some work done at home. The clinic decided yesterday to close today; clients were already calling to cancel and most of the therapists would not come in, either. All of this is kind of new to me, since as a teacher, I always knew I didn't have to go to work if there was a big storm. Still, I had a couple of horrific commutes home in the mid-nineties, when it started snowing in the middle of the day, and I had a 20 mile commute, on the highway. What was normally 40 minutes turned into 90 or more minutes, capped off by trying to navigate up a curvy, steep hill to my house, which was my initial reason for getting a 4 wd vehicle when I moved here. Let's just say the 10 year old rear wheel drive Volvo didn't exactly inspire confidence in me when i learned to drive in the snow at age 37.

SC Upstate is still covered. I drove to work this a.m. on a thick sheet of solid ice. We are beginning to make some progress getting the roads scraped and sanded...finally.

I've never driven in a little more than a dusting, but I have 4WD, wasn't in a hurry and took my everlovin' time. Didn't slip or slide once.

I skied to work today. That involves skiing 1 mile on the bike path (more like slogging through the deep unbroken snow) and skiing 0.5 mile on a road. There were almost no cars out, but I had to climb the snowbank once to avoid an active plow.

re snow driving... 50% of the time the problem is all weather tires/summer tires in snow conditions. I live in snow country and see this all the time... the guy sliding through the intersection with summer tires who thinks if he just drives careful enough it will be OK.

I can see in areas like the south and the carolinas where people freak when there's snow - of course it's an unfamiliar condition.

Me I love it. Bring it on. Don't whine to me about how you hate winter if you are going to live in an area that gets snow every single winter. Instead of being grumpy about it, get out side and play! Snow shoe, XC ski, alpine ski, back country ski... enjoy it.
