Aside from the local NPR jazz station playing that song fairly often it seems, almost rubbing in the good parts of the city that I'll miss, this time of year I was missing Mr. Mueller's Christmas Stollen (or should that be Herr Mueller?). Anyway - Mr. Mueller is a retired German gentleman that would bake bread and bring it to the local farmer's market that happened to be near my office. At Christmas time, he'd bake a wonderful Stollen, which I was sorely missing....
Before I left, when I went to farmer's market for the last time, I told him I was moving away and would sorely miss his Stollen. He said to email my new address and he'd send me a loaf, as he mails out loaves to others. So after I got settled in my house, I sent an email to him, and heard nothing back. Considering things get lost in cyberspace, I was concerned that he got the message. But I wasn't going to push the issue. And I did find a local old country bakery that also makes Stollen - the propretress suggested a taste-off between her's and Mr. Muellers. :p
Well in yesterday's mail was a big box - a loaf of Stollen, and a loaf of his multigrain bread with a Christmas Card :D
I was expecting an invoice, as I did intend to pay for the bread - but instead I got a present!! :D
And yes, I do know what it means to miss New Orleans.
