It's my lucky day!

Okay, so I'm making breakfast this morning I crack the last egg in the carton and it's a DOUBLE YOLK! "Woohoo!" I think, "It's my lucky day!" I've had a double yolk before and always take them as good luck.

So I grab the next carton and grab a second egg for my daughter, and, whoa! THREE YOLKS!

I'd never seen three yolks before. Too weird. And my next thought was, "What are these people feeding these chickens?" But these eggs are from Trader Joes and it says "No Hormones, No Antibiotics" on the carton. Go figure.

I think I need to go buy a lottery ticket today.

Edit: You see the first egg's two yolks on the right there. The second egg's three yolks are on the left. The one that landed first broke and it's spilled out under the other two.

My mother was sure I was going to be twins because of a double yolk egg while she was pregnant with me. Nope, I was alone. I guess that was a lucky egg, because she couldn't have handled another one like me! ;)

I've never seen a triple yolk egg. BTW, there's no pics, Roxy.

Yeah, I'd never even heard of a triple yolk before, and I'd only seen a double yolk once before in my life, and I thought I was pregnant then, too. I had a brief thrill at the thought of is this morning, I have to confess, but that went away fast with the three-yolk egg. Ha!

I'm not sure I 'buy' the whole double yolk = lucky thing. We have our own chickens and double yolks are very, very common. And I would not count myself as particularly lucky! ;) Double yolks usually turn up in eggs that are a bit oddly shaped, so it would explain why you don't see them in grocery store eggs very often. The 'ugly' eggs don't make it to the shelves!

Now, a triple yolk? That is rare. And very cool!

Would you believe the very next egg I took out of that carton had a double yolk, too? The next one was only a single, though, and the one I cooked this morning was only a single.

GLC, I didn't realize they were so common, but I do see the distinction. Both of the first eggs were longer than normal. I'd bought Jumbo eggs, so I didn't think anything of it.

I wasn't sure what to do with the next one - the second double-yolk egg - because I was baking cookies. I wasn't sure if the extra yolk would affect the chemistry, but they turned out fine.

Weirdness, though, so many so close together.

I don't know how commercial producers package eggs, but some birds are more prone to laying double yolk eggs than others. Maybe you had a bunch of eggs in your carton from the same bird so that increased your chances?

The fact that you bought 'jumbo' eggs definitely increases your chances. That's all my mother used to buy when we were kids and so we got doubles fairly often. You'll never see a double yolk in 'medium' size eggs and it's extremely rare in 'large' sized eggs as well. Chances increase with 'extra large' and then again with 'jumbo'. :)
