Figured I would just be honest and say that this thread will probably go for two weeks :p
I had an awesome trail race Saturday! 15K, and I love this race. This is the third year I have done it. I finished in 1:19:45, which is a huge huge pr for me. DH won the whole race!! So fun! I have some pics up on my blog, and I am still a little tired and sore......
Any good weekend stories?
My 50K is now less than 4 weeks away. So scary!

Congrats! I'll have to check out your blog. I love trail races. Someday I hope to do a trail marathon.
5 miles for me last night. I have about 3 months of conditioning runs with no speed work, so I'm working on my form. I've been reading ChiRunning and applying what I'm learning from the book. Last night it was starting to click and I felt like I was flying with the new form. But afterwards my hips were a little wonky--I think because I'm not used to rotating them so much. Today they feel fine, it will just take a little getting used to.

My running plan said to run 22 this weekend as my last long run, but after careful consideration of many factors, I decided to start tapering this weekend instead. Last year this time I got sick, which seriously dampened my race, and I'm sure part of it was that the long run compromised my immune system to get whatever was going around the office. There are a TON of people sick at work and my dad is getting over what was probably the (real) flu, I don't need something to push me over the edge. Also, only 1 long run of taper seemed a little short to me, I'd like to see if an additional week means I have a little more energy. This might be the last dedicated marathon I run for a while, with Ironman CdA in June and Florida in early November I won't be able to run one between April and December.
So, long story short, I ran 12 instead, and since it was 40 and overcast I took my dog the whole way. She's tired today. ;)
I have decided it's better for me to not run in the Bikila, at least for this distance. It's possible if I sized down 1 size they might fit better on the bottom of my foot (though that doesn't solve how they squash the top of my foot), and I think maybe they work better (for me) for shorter/faster distances. I will be repairing my KSOs and running in them for the next 2 weeks to make sure it's the right call, but they never hurt my feet or wore into them like the Bikila do. Also bought a pair of Flows that I might try running in to see if they are comfy enough. They might just end up being wet/snowy running and winter everyday shoes if they aren't quite the right fit. By the end of this week I will have 4 pairs of FiveFingers in 4 different sizes. :p

I ran a whopping 24 minutes today :) But I decided to sign up for a turkey trot - I think I can do it, even though I almost always run trails and those are all roads.
Did the local Monday night 5K in 25:08. Not my best time, despite the fact that I actually ran the whole thing without stopping to walk once (as I have often tended to do--bad trail runner's habit). Is that backwards, or what? The pace I was running was comfortable which was good, but you'd think I'd have a better time instead of worse if I ran the whole time.

Had to knock out my 6 miler really early today so that I can get everything done at work. Super busy conference time means tired and busy me!
I have a huge week training wise next week, and I am getting nervous about the whole ordeal!

I've been running unusually fast this week-- I keep ending up running something between 8:15 and 8:30 per mile. Maybe it's the cooler fall weather, or lower weekly mileage. Anyway, it's fun to be fast!
Today was a rain shortened 2.5 miles. It went from drizzle to downpour awfully fast! but we need the rain....

Got in a little over a 5 mile run yesterday. I was pretty comfortable for the first 3 miles the last 2 were tough because my hamstrings began to get real tight. It was a beautiful day for a run..sunny and temps in the 40s.
I was a total klutz on today's (road) run. First I tripped and fell...on completely smooth pavement. Then not even two minutes later, I got distracted by a big group of kids on the sidewalk who randomly said somethiing to me, and ran smack into a fire hydrant! I have a nice bruise on my left outer thigh now. Today has just generally been a crappy day...I could use another run right about now to de-stress. I just found out a bit ago that there's an internal candidate being interviewed for a job I was really thinking I would have a good chance at getting. That's how things have been going...every time anything has seemed really promising, something has happened to throw a wrench into the works. I am so sick of being in a holding pattern and feeling like I have no stability in my life...not to mention the frustration of having gone to school for so long and then not getting a chance to work in my field. It sucks and I'm starting to wonder if it will ever end.

Had a haircut this AM, ran on the treadmill after work. Have a major headache and feel pretty tired, must be fighting stuff off, or girl stuff. Ugh.
Back on the pavement in the morning, I hope. :) Hoping to be out the door at 8:15, the time my race starts, to hopefully condition for that.

I haven't been running too much, race-walking the dogs (the puppy doesn't know how to walk slow) and doing crossfit. I just signed up for the local 5k Turkey Trot. Think I can do it, slowly.
[Sarah Palin ran in our Turkey Trot last year, haven't heard she's going to be in town again this year. I went down to take photos for the local photography club. I was impressed with her - she could push a double baby stroller, shake the hands of random people wanting to touch her, lean over and talk to her younger jogging children while jogging herself, and she didn't trip.
(She also stopped my SO and asked him about his velomobile).]

Well I was going to swim this afternoon for the first time since July ... called the recording at the Catholic school (our only public lap pool) to find out the school-year hours ... drove into town with nothing else I really needed to accomplish there. To find a sign on the door that said the pool was closed for locker room maintenance.
So I did a couple of little errands and changed into my running gear the minute I got home so as not to lose the momentum. If I sat back down on the couch I might not get up any time soon. :o Four and a half (almost), just up to the corner and back. Maybe I'll swim tomorrow...

Got 7 miles in last night after work. It was dark so I went into town and ran at the park.....lap after lap after lap. BORING! So after the 3rd lap, I took off up a side street and weaved around the neighborhood for a couple miles then back to the park. I hate running in the dark.

Yeah...I'm not looking forward to it. :( Thus far, I've been able to hurry home and get out at dusk, so I can get a quick couple of miles in before full dark. Won't happen for much longer, and the Wednesday workouts are going to be hard - they're getting longer, which forces me out earlier in the a.m., when it's still full dark (but, getting lighter...so I finish in light).
Yesterday, I struggled through 4 miles on the dreadmill. On a positive note, the foot pod on my Forerunner 210 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=83280&ra=true) worked like a champ and I loved being wire free with my Sony W-series MP3 player (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666141653).

Yeah, I've been trying to find a headlamp - to see with, I stay off the roads so don't need to be seen by the coyotes. But, nothing stays stable enough to do anything.

Why was that chicken crossing the road? She sure didn't look like she knew, just kinda ambling along. But she was causing a bit of a traffic backup; we don't really expect to see chickens going walkabout in this urban neighborhood. But considering the number of folks who keep chickens around here, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often...
Besides the escaped hen, I also saw several houses decked out for Christmas on my 10 miles this morning. Beautiful morning for a run-- 40 F and overcast so it didn't matter that I didn't take along my sunglasses. When I head out before dawn, I never remember to bring them...

Not sure what the stability issues are? As in the light bounces around too much? (My sis gets seasick from running with a headlamp) Or they flip down too easily?
Another solution are those mini maglite flashlights. They're a comfortable weight that sets right in a relaxed hand, you don't really need to hold on to them. I use one with a headlamp for night trail runs b/c it gives a little more dimension to the obstacles on the trail.
katluvr, I'm sure you'll do great! Go get 'em!

I went to The Running Event in Austin this week. TRE is an industry trade show/education seminar event. I learned a TON while there.
Since everyone who attends is a runner (almost all are shop owners or employees), they did a timed 5K run on Wednesday @ 7am. Damn, these people are FAST. There were several hundred entrants. Average men's finishing time was 20 minutes (winner was sub-15:00). Avg female was right at 24 minutes.
Despite setting a new PR (27:48! Yay! :D ), I was still almost last across the line.

Wow, that IS a fast group  - WTG on the PR Susan!
Two towns over they were having a Thanksgiving farmers' market, which they do every year - other markets are done for the season. So I went up there with a plan to go to the market, do a little run on the MUP and pick up the new helmet I'd ordered from the LBS ...
So they were doing registrations for the Turkey Trot at the farmers' market. What the heck - even though it's been close to a year since I did any training for shorter distances. With that in mind, I just did four on the MUP, the first 5K at an enthusiastic pace once I was warmed up. :)
I've been fighting some stomach thing for the last couple of days. Hopefully it will clear up in time for Thanksgiving!

Ran an 8 mile trail race today. It was not my fastest but it was faster by half minute than last year... I was hoping for a better improvement, but really, I'm just glad I didn't twist an ankle or trip and take a digger. So yay! :)
1:19:04.
I haven't been very good about posting my runs lately. Today was about an hour trail run; I found some nice trails that I hadn't run before and that turned out to be really good. No idea what my mileage was but I'm sure it was less than 6 since I was going fairly slow.

9 mile run yesterday morning and for some reason this one hurt more than usual. Maybe it was mental. Maybe it was just not a good day to run. Either way, I got through it. It wasn't pretty but it's finished. HM in 2 weeks!

I was supposed to run 18 saturday. By the trail markings, I ran 19.5....but I did circle back a few times to find my friends, and when I was on my own for the last 7, I got lost. Pretty sure I was well above 20  Felt great though. I was ready to be done, for sure, and to call DH and let him know I was safe and done......buuuut, I could have done another 10 if I needed to do it, and that is where I mentally need to be now! Under 3 weeks until my 50K.
On thursday, I will be running the Atlanta Thanksgiving Day Half. I have done if for a few years now, and they changed the course. I think it is going to be harder  I will give it my best shot!
That being said, I have to get my contributions to thanksgiving done early so I can run all morning!
Happy running! I know I am thankful to be able to run!

Love the trail picture, it looks like it belongs on one of those Runner's World pages at the beginning of the magazine (name escapes me). ;)
I ran about 1:15 on Sunday as my last "long" run, the temp dropped to 20s and the wind chill was in the single digits so I did not do it outside, which limited my time (and patience).
6 days to my marathon... I am probably nervous but it's hidden behind a thousand other things. The trick is to find the balance between confidence ("I've done it before, I'll do it again") and indifference ("eh, it's just another marathon"). My last 20 mile run felt so good that I think my brain isn't really convinced this was marathon training. It's supposed to hurt, right?
The temps this week are supposed to be very cold up until the end of the week. Tonight, blizzard warning. I'm not sure if I'll be running outside this week or not. I love running in the snow, and it looks like my insulated and waterproof FiveFingers arrived today, so I might give it a shot. The regular Five Fingers are a little scary in slippery conditions, though not a whole lot worse than running shoes can be.

I ran this morning. Every few weeks this just seems to happen, despite the fact it makes my hip hurt. But, my hip hurts most of the time, so I get disgusted and run.
It;s funny how being in the dark makes things easier. I went out dressed to run (i.e. shorts) as it was 50 at 5:30 AM, but I saidI was going to walk. All of a sudden, I found myself running. Probably more slowly than I would if I had the intentionof running, but before I knew it, I had turned around and had run up the 10% grade hill and was at my driveway. I think it comes from not being able to see hills and such as well in the dark, because the same thing happens when riding. The roads were wet, though, so I am glad I ditched the bike.
Eh, I am bored. Two clients cancelled so TE has to amuse me for the next 20 minutes.

A little over four, including 6 x 100m sprints with a long interval between to strop the edge a little ahead of the Turkey Trot. :o Not a goal event, but it's way too far to drive if I'm not at least going to try to do my best, and it feels like forever since I've raced a 5K.

Can I join? :) Posting runs will keep me motivated...
Yesterday I discovered a new challenge: in our town we have an old castle on a small hill. 420 something steps lead up there and having climbed the stairs there is another steep climb to the very top of the hill. Running upstairs was tougher than I would have expected, I had to stop in the middle and wait for a minute or two :)
The castle-hill is right in the middle of my ordinary 5k-run, so the run doesn't become much longer but a lot more challenging if I run over the top.
I'm looking forward to beating the stairs in the future (not having to stop to catch my breath) :p
OakLeaf
11-24-2010, 05:46 AM
Wowee Susan!
Years ago I used to run the stairs at a dam down the road, it was something around 105-120 steps I seem to remember, and my legs would be WRECKED if I did it even three times. Then I did some short runs when we visited Venice a couple of years ago, most of the sidewalks and almost all of the bridges are granite, that stuff is HARD.
It sounds like a beautiful place to run but really, really tough, so you should be proud of doing it at all, WITH stops to catch your breath. :)

mother nature, make up your mind!! Tuesday it was 50 F when I ran; I way over-dressed for the conditions, and kept on stripping off layers as I went and ended up in a tank top. Wednesday, it was 30 F and windy at the same hour; I was wishing I'd worn my warmer tights. And tomorrow, it'll likely be nearly 50 F at 6:30 am again....
Anyway, today was 4 miles of hills, the steepest part into the wind. But thankfully no stairs or castles!

No formal Turkey trot for me.
Today's training schedule called for "speed work".
Conveniently, there's a high school 1.25 miles from my house with a track.
So I ran there, and did 3 intervals (0.5 mile work, 0.25 mile recovery) around their track, which I shared with about 2 dozen Canada geese!
Boy were they giving me the stink eye every time I passed them.
"Hey. You're squatting in my lane!" I'd yell. They didn't appear to care.
Left to run home as a few cars pulled into the parking lot and other runners got out.
Happy Thanksgiving all.

Wednesday, 6 miles at 9:20 or so miles. Resisting running outside in single digits until the forecast says I have no choice, so I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill. Thursday, 4 miles in the snow at around 20 degrees (which felt pretty toasty :p). I wore my new cw-x pro tights (thanks TE) which aren't insulated but I wanted to make sure they were the right fit, and an extra insulated layer against my skin. Also, got my FiveFingers Flows, wore those both days to test them out.
The experience of the Flows in 3" of fresh snow (on top of packed snow, or previously plowed sidewalks/paths - we've had about 4 days of consistent snow, some days up to 4-5") was so different than the experience of shoes. I could feel how slippery or packed the snow was and adjust my stride and pressure accordingly. I didn't feel nearly as disconnected with my feet as I do running in regular shoes in snow, and my pace didn't really suffer, definitely not nearly as much as it usually does. They are insulated a bit and neoprene on top ("like putting a wetsuit on your feet" my husband said) so they keep your feet dry, but they are chilly if you're standing on snow or ice and you're not circulating enough blood to the extremities. They also seem to be adjusting my pinky toes, they feel sore sitting around but are fine when you're moving.
Anyway, I had an awesome time in the snow, and so did my dog. I look forward to a winter of snow running if it continues this way. :)

Today was one of those days when the hardest part of the run is getting out the door... but after a few miles, and after turning out of the wind for a while, it all felt great. Ended up going 9 miles, then enjoyed a big bowl of oatmeal.
The unexpected sight of the day: just around the corner from my house, there was a guy on his bicycle negotiating price with a hooker. Never seen *that* before... it's unusual enough to see the ladies out working at 8 am...

Started out late - needed to digest the whole wheat blueberry pancakes I made us for breakfast! :o. Felt fine on the run, but afterwards, felt crappy - weak, tummy troubles, and dizzy. Major "grey outs" everytime I stood up. So I ended up dozing on the couch the rest of the afternoon!

Good luck, Colby! I know you are doing great!
Ran 10 miles this morning. It's the week before the HM in Memphis so I have my taper week ahead of me. I am sooooo ready! The blister needs to heal more but I think it's still going to be an issue.

Ran 10.6 today with DH... slower I am sure than he'd like to go (9:30 to his 7:42 average) but it's a big improvement for me so I'm happy. Rounds out a good week mileage-wise.
Colby, I am looking forward to your race report!

Nice 5+ mile trail run with a rather steep hill at the start. I really need to focus on the hills as they always slow me way down. Have a great end of November everyone!!

I did a little over eight. It was a beautiful day, but I was a little nervous because it's opening day for deer gun season. Basically nobody with any sense goes outside for the next two weeks. I waited until early afternoon when the deer would be least active and hunters might be taking a lunch break. Saw a few hunters and/or their vehicles, but only heard a few shotgun reports (it was near nonstop this morning).

Thought I posted yesterday's run, but guess not! It was my first run since the half. Working the holiday weekend did in my running.
Did 4 miles. I decided if I want to hold sub-10 min mile pace I needed to become more comfortable at running at a faster pace. So did 4 miles, avg 10:19 pace. Was "comfortably hard". My hamstrings were really tight & really feeling it during the run. It was already in the 70's, but had a nice breeze.
Then I headed out x-mas shopping. Feet & legs were toast by the end of the day!
Heading out for 5 this AM.

5 miles completed this AM. So it was a warm & balmy last day of Nov. Temps in the 70's, humid (not as bad as summer), overcast, and a bit misty at times. I did my version of a progression run. It did get tough.
5 miles, ending avg pace 10:45.
Mile 1: easy 11:12 pace
Mile 2: up to 10:41 (goal sub-11)
Mile 3: 10:15
Mile 4: 9:51--tough mile, it was NOT comfortably hard, but just hard
walked at begining of mile 5 and decided to ignore pace on watch and go slow and easy and "cool down"
Mile 5: 11:46
During the half marathon my quads were tight and feeling it and sore afterwards. But the run yesterday and today were all about the hamstrings. Not sure what it is
Tomorrow is a very easy and slow 3 miler. At least I am back to running. But appetite is really up. Had a nibble before run and was starving post run! I am sure I will be ready for lunch soon, too!

Yesterday was a great 6 miles-- started out early enough to be running by moon and starlight. And then I got to see a stunning sunrise...
Today was a different story. I felt so hardcore out there running in all the wind and rain, but gave up after only 2 miles. But I'm planning on hitting the treadmill at the Y tonight. Or if this rain lets up, maybe do a few miles on the new bike/walk trail...

Holy cow.
All you gals are amazing - whipping off 6, 7, 26 (!) mile runs.
I think I turned a corner.
When I started jogging in late February for an April 1st 5K, I did 90% of my training on a treadmill. I did 3 jogs outside in preparation for the event.
Now, I'm training for a 5 miler, and I'm doing most of my training outside. Except today. Today, I was at my gym to give 20 minutes to the rowing machine for a "Maintain Don't Gain" challenge they're running for the holiday season. They run things like this to keep folks motivated. After my 20 minutes, I got on the treadmill for a 2 mile "easy run" - per my training schedule.
And I promptly learned 2 things:
1. Going from bike to run, as when I would do this run after coming home from bike commuting from work, is a WHOLE lot easier on my legs than transitioning from the rowing machine to the treadmill. Holy cow. My legs (and knees!) were toast.
2. My corner I just turned: I really understand now why some call it a "dread-mill". Blech. 25 minutes of slogging on that awful thing at a measly 1% incline was about all I could bear. No wind. No changing scenery. Nothing to run towards ("Okay, I'm gonna sprint to the next mailbox!"). It was just - Pound. Sweat buckets. Watch a few t.v. screens with no sound. Try to figure out the tattoos on the guy on the elliptical in front of me. Sweat buckets. See who's coming and who's going. Pound. Sweat more buckets. Boring. I think I'll try to sneak out of work early next time so I can perhaps get SOME of my run in daylight!

I did a whopping 2.6 miles today. At a 9:30 (?) or so pace...and it wiped me out. So frustrating. Last one in the group by probably half a mile. Oh well, I'll get there.
