Big hauls by bike

Well, first thing would be the art of piling and strapping all that stuff safely, to be hauled by bike.

Bet our traffic laws don't address this for bikes...probably because so few people try this sort of thing here in North America. And if they did, it would be some big new media event. Vs. elsewhere where it's just part of normal life/transport.

There are plenty of bike-hauled loads that do not require Photoshop to impress. Take a look at Xtracycle http://www.xtracycle.com/ or any other legitimate site for examples.

I've seen loads on bike and motorbikes in Vietnam and Cambodia that are similar, but not quite as extreme as the examples linked by shootingstar. I am too lazy to reach for my old laptop for some pictures, but I have the following from Siem Reap (not at all out of the ordinary -- somewhere I have another photo with 2-3 pigs, but from the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City):

Edited to add: In more rural settings, you spot the overloaded bikes, but I have never seen something as extreme as the tricycles shown in the link above. I recall a book published about that, though.

Do a search of "move by bike". This past summer I saw a group go through my neighborhood. I waved to them as they rode by. Really impressive.

Found the book -- all motorcycles in Vietnam, though: "Bikes of Burden", by Hans Kemp. Some samples through a slide show from ABC News (http://abcnews.go.com/International/popup?id=2342131). It's amazing to see.

I think it's even worse that the animals are alive! Pigs, dogs, chicken, fish (lots of tiny plastic bags with water and gold fish).

I ride and play like that in my dreams! But in a dream world, the piano would be in tune.

I saw a guy biking down the Springwater Corridor with a full-sized mattress balanced on his shoulder. I don't know how he did it.

I've got an xtracycle, but it's used primarily for hauling the boys. The most I ever carried by bike was when I had my friend's bakfiets for a few weeks, and helped another friend move in to their new place when they got back from a summer in Finland.

Not nearly as impressive as some of those other loads above, but it was fun to know I could move all that by bike :)

That is such a cool bike! We need one of those today as I have a stack of 8 ebay packages to mail. We'll load up DH's panniers and stack the big ones on his rear rack and bungee 'em to ride to the post office, but something like that would be so much more handy! :p
