Our city is doing it's bi-annual bulk pickup and our neighborhood streets are currently lined with piles of "junk" to be disposed of. I ran across this treasure, one wheel sticking out from under a huge pile of branches, begging me to take it home.

I am having trouble identifying it though. The label says it is a Giant Grand Prix, although the Giant logo looks much different from the one currently used. I have scoured the internet and can't find any information for a bike by that name. Any TE'ers know where I can find info on my new girl?

oooh, nice project bike. We want to see the "after" pictures.

You might want to check this site. http://www.mrmartinweb.com/bicycle.html

It's how I found out about Knott's thrift store bike. It's since been beautifully made over by Robinson Wheelworks.

But log off and get back out there. Rescue more steel bikes ;)

One person's trash.... Wow, that is really cool. Next Spring I'm thinking about scouring some yard sales in search of something like that.

Thanks Trek. That website listed some info on Giant bicycles that may be helpful.

Hopefully I can do a nice job fixing it up!

After my morning ride, I began to clean the rust from the bike. I am going to have to paint the frame, but most of the components look as good as new. So exciting!

look at the lugs on that beauty! And that crank is so pretty. They don't make them like that anymore, do they?

The paint is terribly scratched and rusted. I wish it wasn't, because I love the light root beer color. I sanded it, taped off all the beautiful chrome, and primed it this afternoon. I can't wait to finish it.

Tri girl, I think the cranks are my favorite part on the bike. :)

The paint is finished. I love how shiny it looks. I will take it to The Bike Guy tomorrow so he can repack the bottom bracket and reassemble everything. :)

did you just spray paint it?

did you just spray paint it?

Yup. I sanded the original paint, taped the chrome, primed/sanded/primed, painted, and clear coated. I wish i could afford a real paint job, but I think it turned out really nice. And I did it myself! That will make riding it even more fun.

Thanks Emily! I like green, too. :D

Thanks, ladies! I am going to replace the brake cable housing tomorrow and then I can daydream about accessories. :)

ETA: ... and replacing those awful torpedo grips. Oy.

Do post a final "before" and "after" photo. I know I am inspired by the transformation and very impressed you've done it yourself.

The bike had a sprung Brooks saddle when you found it? Wow.

rubywagon
12-15-2010, 05:23 AM
I wish it was a Brooks, but it isnt. I got most of the rust off of it and tried to make it work, but after a ride on it yesterday, it had to be replaced. Structurally, it was crumbling and falling apart. Shame!
