Okay, my sister and I were on a road trip (auto) and talking about various things. She works for an insurance company. She handles phone calls for insurance coverage, pre-authorizations, coverage, etc. She told me she gets quite a few phone calls from women cyclists that need labia reconstruction. I was nieve for a second so she explained to me that these women are needing to tighten the opening of their vaginas. I'm sure she knows what she's talking about. What I want to know is how common is this? Is it avoidable? I love my bike, but this sounds horrid!!!

tell her to refer them over to their LBS for a proper saddle and bike fit. I've never hoid of the issue or had any problem with that.

That question was a little difficult for me to put out there. It's not something anybody wants to talk about, let alone have it happen. I'm glad you've never even "hoid" :p about it before. Maybe there's a lot more involved than just a bicycle in the cases that my sister deals with. I might just have to get the balls  to ask my LBS about this, and make sure I'm on the right saddle also!!!

Well, maybe they're prank calls?

Maybe they had the condition already and are trying to blame it on the bike? I hear it's a popular cosmetic surgery, in fact, there was just an episode about it on the Second Season of Nip/Tuck I am watching :-)

I've worked for a health insurance company for about 13 years and I have not seen a claim for this or heard a call about it. I've seen it on the plastic surgery shows though and I wonder if its not like Nanci says where someone has seen a tv program about it and wants to see if they can get the surgery paid for as a non cosmetic condition. As a cyclist I personally wouldnt get too worked up about it though.........

Wouldn't doing your kegels be a lot cheaper and better for you?

Nanci

No, kegels wouldn't help that. It's a droopy lips problem, if you know what I mean. Just have to get them trimmed!

in some cultures long labia are considered a sign of beauty. They peirce the labia and hang weights from them.

Maybe they could then act as a sort of natural chamois, kind of folded up under there ;-) I'm glad that's not in style here...

i'm heard of the surgery but not with any particular cxn to cycling

I'm in agreement that it's probably women trying to get a cosmetic or "lifestyle" surgery covered by insurance that otherwise wouldn't be. Perhaps if they blame it on the bike it moves from "cosmetic" to "reconstructive". Most insurance will cover reconstructive surgery but not cosmetic surgery.

I agree too. It's big birth weight babies and age that causes this. I'm beginning to feel like the boys - should you tuck up or down or sideways?

I am willing to bet that your right SimpleCycle. My train of thought had never taken me in that direction. Next time my sister is giving me sh** about riding a bike and getting loose I can throw that at her. (She's a runner and likes to make fun of my bicycle--not very nice). :( Thanx ladies for the laughs :p You know, I did not know until 2 minutes ago that THAT was a body part to worry about sagging!!! I guess I got that gravity thing right?!?

nuthatch, I was howling after reading your post. Not sure I can pull myself together sufficiently to go to work

No. To be honest, are you sure she's not pulling your leg? My family would say something like that to get me to start calling around!

But, more than likely, women are just trying to come up with excuses to keep their men happy. Men end up saying some stupid things sometimes and women get self conscious.

like my boyfriend telling me he loves the fact that I'm shaped like a drumstick. 'curvy' would have worked. Drumstick is HORRIBLE.

So maybe a guy made a wrong stupid comment and the panic spread?
I dunno.

I dunno if I'd buy the "Keep the men happy" thing... guys are for the most part extrodinarily easy to please. You know the old "show up naked and bring beer" joke? Or my borrowed quote, "if they aren't horny make them a sandwich?" I would totally put my $$ on a cultural thing, or something that someone's read in a magazine, nothing more than that

lol, i think they may just make men different here in memphis.

the truth is, I wasn't going to say this, because it gets into the realm of too much information, but let's say you get with a rather... unendowed man. You love this man, he loves you. You don't want to tell him the problem is his, that's like shooting him. Or maybe you don't realize because you don't know and you think it's your problem.

I've seen it happen with some men and women. Lol, before that I just assumed that if you showed up, men were happy. :)

I agree with the "getting older" scenario - all body skin gets drier and less elastic - hence the droop.
Not a laughing matter I suppose though -- cuz the situation would cause the "labia minor" to fold under in various ways and pinch. Blood cut-off from bits and pieces, edges etc.
Sigh.
I think that people wanting/feeling the need to have this type of surgery may have had the condition prior to cycling but are now noticing it more b/c of starting to ride? Cycling seems to be getting more popular than ever before.

Keeping blood circulating in the area would probably be a helpful thing to prevent this -- or put it off as long as possible.
So...I say: Have lot's of sex -- or whatever -- float your boat! Keep that circulation happening! Nourishing, oxygenated blood ... everywhere :)

Now the real question? How does this relate to veggie weiners?

I was going to try to tie it in with Long or Short, but I resisted...Not any more!!

Could this be related to having a prolapsed uterus? Also, women do come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and labias vary greatly. Its particularly relevant to female cyclist because things hanging out at your saddle and getting pinched there must HURT. Hence, advanced saddle technologies. Hehehe.
