It's finally paying off. I've been riding somewhat regularly for the past year, and yesterday I weighed 202 bare-butt nekkid. :) I have lost 28 lbs. in the last year. I haven't been this little in 16 years!!!! My big goal is 160, but below 200 will suit me fine for right now. Any tips on how to get this going??? I seem to be changing shape, but the weight isn't really going anywhere. I think I'm building muscle.. Thanx. Mikki

Way to go Mikki! :D There is nothing quite as motivating as seeing those numbers on the scale. I find it hard to believe something so fun can be so good for us! You are right, you're losing body fat and gaining muscle, that's why you are changing shape when the numbers aren't changing as much. If you get a body fat monitor scale, it's even more motivating. Plus, the more muscle you build, the more calories you will burn. Congratulations on losing those 28 pounds :p

Way to go!

Just remember... calories in = calories out. And if you want to lose pounds... the calories out must be more than the calories in.

It's just that simple.

Good for you, Miki!! You are accomplishing what so many can't or won't. I'm no expert on quickening the process ( from what I can tell, my fat cells are also part super-glue  ) but are you drinking enough water? Are you doing something in the morning - some yoga or stretching or dancing to Aretha - to warm up your metabolism for the day? Let me know what helps you keep that number moving down. We all know the value of building muscle, but I, too, really lust after leaving the 200 club. What a psychological kick that will be. Send me a postcard, since you're gonna beat me there!

And good for you again! An ex-junkie once told me that losing weight was harder than kicking heroin. You are make of strong stuff!

along with the calories in = calories out advice (and you actually need less calories in than out).... what you eat matters too! eat clean! eat whole foods! no fast food (or rarely... as a treat).... GOOD carbs (no white bread, white pasta, white rice.... stick with brown!) no or limited sugar.... soda's are empty calories (even diet soda has junk in it!)

yep, all good words here... I have learned to substitute my snack selection with fruit... need something to munch? eat an apple... I try to make sure I am taking in plenty of natural fiber... fruits, veggies, and beans

yeah, I'd rather have a Snickers but I sure like how my jeans hug my behind when I stick with the apples...

congrats on your loss... as a lifetime Weight Watcher I KNOW how hard it is to lose that weight!!! way to go... :) Looking forward to hearing about the first weigh in under 200!!!

:D WAY TO GO MIKKI! :D

That rocks and you should be proud of your success and without any fad diets. One of the things that I fall victim to sometimes is thinking that I can eat anything I want because I've just done a 2 hour ride. As an active individual you need more calories but as KSH has said watch watch you put in vs what you use up.

I'm right there with you mikki! I've been on a weight removal plateau for months until I started riding my new bike 3 weeks ago! I've dropped 1.12 lbs per week but I am seeing more trimming & muscle definition in my legs than appears on the scale so I heartily agree with the gaining muscle/loosing fat theory!

Since I'm not a road warrior (way too nervous) I am limited to a nearby rail trail. However, once I got over my fear of the hills I needed to conquer in order to reach the trail there has been no stopping me! I regularly ride the 24 mile trip and was ecstatic that I not only accomplished this ride, but I had enough energy to go even farther! Evidently walking 3-4 miles per day for the past year has strengthened my legs & conditioned my cardiovascular system making cycling the most enjoyable experience I've had in decades! And to think.....we burn mega calories while having so much fun is ....well it's like something that needs to be shouted from the rooftops or something!

Let's both keep up the good work Mikki! Ride on!!!

~doorah~who is already stressing over the coming winter & her inablility to ride.......wondering if there is a women's cross country ski site that compares to TE???

How exciting! Congratulations! I am 2# away from a milestone, too. I am so anxious for the day that I don't have to slide the 150# weight out on the scale! I have really slowed down, too, in pounds per week, but am content with one or two. It's kind of discouraging to ride more than a hundred miles on the weekend and really, really watch the calories, and then weigh the same on Monday morning. My trend, though, has been to show up a pound or two lighter in the middle of the week, then.

Way to go everyone! I have been following weight watchers since June 1 and have lost 25 lbs, and am hoping for 10 more. It sure is great not hauling that weight up the hills. On days I do not ride, I walk. I wouldn't be losing nearly that much without the exercise. The thing I miss the most is ice cream, which I believe is a major food group!

I am thinking about buying one of the Pilates floor exercise machines, not too expensive. Can anyone recommend a brand and/or model??

Well done! I know biking makes the whole "shape changing" thing so much more enjoyable!

Can I put in a plug for commuting to work by cycle? If you can swing it, it builds cycing into your routine every work day! Sure makes the day go better!

Great Job!!! I love to hear stories like this! I always thought that bikers were sleak little things. For a while I thought that I was the only big butt biker in my city. Then I payed more attention  Silly me. Congrats on everyones accomplishments!

Mikki I wished you lived in my city. I could really use a buddy with the same goals!!! Keep doing what your doing and you'll get were you wanna go.

It takes a brave personality to try something new.

Woohoo! Right on! Get on that bike and ride....ride....ride. Like Forest Gump, he never looked back when he started to run. Besides, life is alot like a box of chocolates.....(just allow yourself that one nibble a day, keeping you from taking yourself hostage and eating the whole box in one sitting. (Us women never do that  ) Knowing you can have that nibble of whatever and be satisfied, because you know, tomorrow is just a nibble away)
 <--- Mikki in her cycling shades...

Do you make any affirmations and qoutes for yourself?

Depending upon your activity, try dropping your calorie level (but no too low, or you won't lose weight). Bump up your exercise level, too. Maybe X-train. Plateaus are hard, but you'l break through it. Have your portion sizes crept up a bit? That happens too.
Great job on your weight loss!

Wow! Thanks for the encouragement everyone. No, portions sizes have actually decreased a bit. Maybe that's why my legs ache today. More protein perhaps??? I'm not riding this morning, because of the hollow aching. Besides, I'd be bicycle commuting to my clinical rotation (nursing student) and I with this hollow feeling, I doubt I'd be able to stand all day as well as ride. Still it feels good to be doing this in a healthy manner.

See you on the street.
