View Full Version : Trimming eyebrows

OK, I freely admit it, I have bushy eyebrows. I've always sworn that I would never color my hair, or do anything about them - au natural and all that.
But, yesterday a new hairdresser trimmed them. She just did it, she was chatting at me, then picked up the trimmers they use to trim the back of the neck for very short haircuts, and without so much as a by-your-leave, she quickly ran them over my eyebrows... I was rather shocked and a little appalled, until I looked in the mirror- geez, I look better. It took her 30 seconds and no thought at all.
So, I'd like to continue, but don't know how. Do I buy a pair of trimmers? would scissors work? Is it often enough to wait until I get a haircut and go to the same woman?

You can find out what kind of scissors she used and go get some at a beauty supply shop and try it out. Or you can just have her do it when you get your haircut. I do that, but I have mine threaded. For me, it makes a difference because it seems to brighten my whole face. I didn't do anything with them for a long time, but I'm glad I do now.

you have your eyebrows threaded? What does that mean????

Mimi - it's like plucking but all in one big swoop. Kind of like a more accurate waxing, if I recall correctly.
I trim my eyebrows. I pluck the necessary hairs, and then I brush my eyebrows a certain way and then trim them with super sharp, tiny scissors. I also use a brow gel every day (kind of like clear mascara) to control my eyebrows otherwise they look messy. I do keep them rather full though as the tidy but over-plucked look does not look right on my face.

i never had enough to trim. Better that way, I guess! (ouch!)

A very low-tech way of taming eyebrows. I was introduced to it by a friend from India, but apparently it started in Persia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threading_%28epilation%29

ahhh... according to my boyfriend I have caterpillars for eyebrows. They don't lie next to my skin but stick out. And they're kind of wispy, too. So I just use those trimmers (one line of shaver sort of thing with an attachment to adjust the length). I think men's nose/ear trimmer is the same thing but probably call it something different.
I also pluck the wayward ones that enhance the caterpillar look. My eyebrows are the least favourite feature of my face.

your eyebrows sound like mine, but I think my downward-facing mouth is my least favorite feature, LOL.
thanks all, I'll give something a try.

I have Andy Rooney eyebrows.
Every month or so I trim them by running a comb "backward" over the brows, trimming every hair that sticks up beyond the comb.
I also pluck between my brows, choosing the victims by scowling and then yanking out every hair that sticks straight out from my skin when I scowl. It is asymmetrical, but it ends up looking just fine because my face is somewhat asymmetrical anyway. I also pluck wayward critters that are creeping south of the rest of their brethren.
My mom has had her brows threaded, and loved it. She says I should do it, but I'm quite happy with my own (free!) monthly maintenance program.

I cannot do my own brows--I get nauseated for some reason. I would if I could, but I have some weird anti-plucking thing going on.

Wow, tulip - I'm fine with plucking (though it makes me sneeze) but I get weird about filing my nails. I just can't do it. It's giving me goosebumps just thinking about it.

I pay good money to have my hair stylist wax and trim my eyebrows each time I get my hair cut and it's worth every penny. I've had mine threaded before too and they look great but I have to go out of town to get it done. Not practical.
I just can't do it myself. It's always been difficult for me to get them even and now I can't see well enough. It's worth a few bucks to let a professional do it.

I can't say I've ever had my eyebrows trimmed but I've been waxing them for years and, more recently, switched over to threading. It's hurts a lot more but the end results last longer and pull less on the delicate eye skin. More hurty but less wrinkles. :D

My stylist says, "We pluck chickens. We tweeze brows."
I found Sally Hansen's home waxing kit to be very effective with my own monthly maintenance. And I tweeze in between any stragglers. I'm starting to get sprouters all over my chin and jawline, too.
However did our great-grandmothers do it?

Wow, I feel lucky. I have "average" eyebrows, not bushy at all, and since I've been tweezing for years, only a few strays down below to tend to every couple of days, none in between 'em. No waxing, threading, trimming required. I do trim my DH's brows, tho, when I cut his hair. His have a tendency to get long and unruly.
I do have one icky chin hair, now that I'm of a certain age. Look for it daily in bright bathroom light and find it now and then, ready to be plucked before (hopefully) it's long enough for anyone else to notice. One of the joys of aging! :(

Only one hair!
I have to shave my frickin' moustache every 3 or 4 days, just like my Grandma did. My mom doesn't have this joy of aging, and had the temerity to laugh about it.
I had a couple chin hairs, but years of yanking those critters out finally killed 'em off.
Tweezers and razors are my friends!

I'm telling you, Sally Hansen's home wax kit, available at CVS for about $8 -- the one you heat in the microwave, not the little wax strip things. Those didn't work for me at all. Not even a little. The heatable wax, though, is great. One kit lasts for several sessions.
I highly recommend having an ice pack handy, though, for the post-removal ouch-fest. It smarts. It does. But it works. And it comes with a cream that relieves the pain immediately.
I use it on my 12-year-old, too. She inherited her father's eyebrows, poor kid.

Only one hair!
I fully expect more as time goes on - I turn 50 next year.
Thank heavens, no moustache. Yet. I do have unbearably long and dark arm hair, though. I still remember as a kid one of my cousins calling me "gorilla arms". I've been sensitive about my arm hair ever since.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with thick eyebrows that have to be waxed/plucked periodically...it is a pain. I usually use the wax strips to get most of the stray hairs and then tweeze the remaining stragglers; I've had it done at the salon a few times but can't really justify paying somebody to do it when I can do it myself. I also get some upper lip hair that I have to wax (not as often)...the comments from people saying it gets worse as one gets older are making me a bit nervous as I am only in my mid 20s!

A few years ago I had some electrolysis on the few hairs on my chin and lip. She lectured me about not plucking, said it causes the root to twist and just gets worse and worse. The electrolysis worked like a charm and lasted for 12 years. So, i've recently started shaving the few new chin hairs every morning. I think that is working great, and no hairs are apparent to anyone - no plucking necessary.
I'm going to get electrolysis again. the first time it was 15 min/wk for 8 wks, the growth cycle. I've had a completely clean lip and just a few chin hairs since.

This has been on my mind lately. My eyebrows are Ok, just tweeze every few days.
But... in the past few months my "mustache" has gotten thicker. It's blonde, but there are now rogue dark hairs appearing maybe once a week. When I look closely, I notice that I actually have a nicely shaped beard, but no one can see it, since it's blonde and thin peach fuzz. I am thinking of getting the upper lip waxed, but I am not sure if I have to let it grow a bit. I've been trimming it with baby scissors and plucking out the rogue dark hairs. Ouch for that. My only experience with waxing is the bikini area and I hope that if I get the upper lip waxed that I won't have the same irritation afterwards (I think that is mostly caused by clothing irritation). I would consider laser treatments, but I read that post that said it doesn't work so well for light hair.

I have my eyebrows waxed by my hairstylist whenever she cuts my hair. In between cuts, I do have to pluck a few strays now and then...especially the center area between my eyebrows. If I don't, then I'll start to get that lovely "uni-brow" thing going on. :D

Aw, Emily!
But I can beat that.:o I got called "pube legs" once at camp , so I'm super paranoid about the hair on my upper legs. It's quite thick - I used to wax and now I use an Emoji epilator (http://www.emjoi.com/detail/EMJ+AP-10). Talk about embarassing for a pre-teen!

Oh wow, I bet. I don't feel so bad about my "Gorilla arms" now... Thankfully I only have blonde, wispy hair on my thighs if I don't shave 'em. Why I only have the dark, noticeable hair on my forearms, I'll never understand. I'm actually looking forward to going gray there, but it seems to be a very slow process!

And I'm the opposite! Wispy blonde hair on my arms, dark hair on my legs. Figures!
Will my leg hair eventually go grey? That would be AWESOME!

Actually, I don't know if body hair does turn grey...I'm just hoping (for my arms). So strange how the human body works -- you have such dark head-hair, but blonde arm hair!? And I have streaky (from brown to blonde to white) head hair, was blonde as a child, and have dark hair on my arms. WTH?
