Finally saw my dr. today after Knotted lit a fire under me over the weekend. Thankfully he does not think it is my back :D He said that the symptoms of referred pain are not there. Also, what I thought was my hip flexors are not - they are the tendons that attach the quads at the top of my leg.
So, he says I have tendinitis in both quad and hamstring on the same leg, and that the only way to get this healed quickly is to head to physical therapy. He did not see a need for x-rays of hip or back as of yet unless something else comes up during physical therapy.
At least I can still cycle and spin...albeit gently
The exam was interesting, he is a D.O. and was doing all kinds of things to my leg and hip and so forth. I really didn't know what to make of it though when he started hitting the bottom of my foot  Apparently I passed the test though :)

Good, you finally went!
I'll call TE tonight and arrange your giftcard. Please PM me your real name and address.
(he was hitting the bottom of your foot to check for short-circuited reflexes)
ETA: and no, I'm NOT giving a TE gift card to every TE'er who goes to the doctor! Catrin is it! The rest of you just have to get there on your own! :)

Glad you went and glad it's not your back. Did you doc refer you to a PT? I'm going to one that's downtown (at Illinois and Ohio), which is convenient. I see them Wednesday for the first time. I can let you know what I think.

My insurance is at Westview Hospital - which is an osteopathic hospital as you know. The PT department is in the same building as my fitness club, so it is quite convenient. I am limited to where my insurance will pay - but I understand they have a pretty good group there.
I am glad it isn't my back either - OR my hip. At first he was more concerned about my hip I think.

Catrin, I'm so happy that you got checked out and got a diagnosis for something you can "fix". I know it has been stressing you so much to be uncertain, and hurting and losing out on the activity you love. Good luck with the PT!

I just have to NOT start obsessing about how this happened... Like I told someone the other day - I would rather get aches and pains over being active than deal with the consequences of being sedentary
On a positive note, my A1C test is actually 5.3!!!!! My hard work has really paid off at driving back the Type 2 diabetes spector :D  :D I may not be able to do the brevet that I wanted to do for my 51st birthday, but this is a pretty good present in its place :)

Especially since it was 7 last time :(
So I will have to ride on my birthday to celebrate. Gently. I suppose I shouldn't go out looking for hills to climb...my ride Sunday felt fine though. My evaluation is scheduled for Monday - apparently they are short staffed this week.

Woot!! Hooray!
Glad you've finally got a diagnosis on your leg, and hope it heals up quick now that you're getting some "hands-on" help with it.

Actually, I think she should give YOU a gift card, since you've been so patient in helping her with this and several other things (saddle, etc).

Has anyone had both kinds of tendonitis (quad and hamstring) at the same time? I know everyone is different of course, just curious if you had physical therapy and how long it took to recover from it. I know that tendonitis of any kind can be a bear to heal if it isn't treated right - and sometimes even then.
I am very glad that it turned out to not be my back - but ya know - tendonitis in one place would have been enough  At least my doc said I could ride if I was very easy about it and kept it short - but don't know what the PT may advise when I see him Monday...
It is probably good that I move next week, there won't be time for much this weekend outside of packing...
Ya know, I shouldn't be surprised I suppose - I DID go from being a sloth to riding like a wild woman in something like 5 months or so :D

I've never seen it in my career, but "never say never." :D

Really? Just my luck then, I've never done anything halfway!

Isn't tendinitis inflammation of the tendon? And aren't quads and hamstrings muscles? Something doesn't make sense to me.
When I had tendinitis in my arm due to too much typing, it was at the elbow and wrist. So wouldn't Catrin's be at the knee and hip? I could understand how tendinitis would result in trigger point in the muscle. Maybe that's what the doc means by quad and hamstring tendinitis.

It is the tendons attached to those muscles, and the muscles themselves are also inflamed - especially the hammie. I had no idea that the soreness at the back of my knee on that leg was caused by the hamstring though - I figured that it was related to my saddle height...
I saw the massage therapist last night at my club who massaged that leg last week and he asked how things were going. I told him what the doctor said and he wasn't surprised. He said my hamstrings were like extremely tightly wound ropes that would not loosen with the normal methods.
I do admit what he said about my quad was a surprise - I thought THAT was healed - but the soreness I thought was in my hip flexor turned out to be in a tendon attaching the upper quad...
My dr. said the occasional pain while sitting/lying down has to do with the inflammation and that I am lying/sitting upon the tendons that are most aggravated...
They are trying to work me into PT evaluation today or tomorrow, but I don't think it will happen until Monday. One of their therapists is in labor and another on vacation - they are kind of short staffed.

Well that makes sense. After all, the ankle bone is connected to the leg bone...it's all a connected.
Oh, and by the way, when I was in PT for my tendinitis in my wrist and elbow, they said I had to REST it completely in order for it to heal. No typing, no gardening (with that arm), etc. So just be prepared for that possibility.

I am prepared for it - though the dr said I could take a gentle ride. If the PT tells me I have to get off the bike for a time then I will. I will hate it, and stress over the effect of the lack of intense exercise might do to my blood sugar, but I will do it. Hopefully it would only be for a couple of weeks and my A1C is well within the normal range right now so hopefully that would be find for a short time.

I finally saw the physical therapist this afternoon for my evaluation. Surprise, surprise, he said no bikes. No spinning bikes. No elliptical. I can, however, walk. No lower body weights. I can walk. I could swim if I knew how... For at least a week - but that is ok, I am moving this weekend anyway. And it wasn't a surprise...I just hope that I am not being overly optimistic about only being off a week.
He thinks it is tendonitis as well, and possibly a strained muscle. He did give me several exercises for hip abduction and stretching my hip flexors, I guess more exercises will come Friday.

I'm there with you-
I overdid it on my 3 week break from work and my hip is acting up again. I'm back to doing all the exercises from the PT from last spring, and the chiropractor as well, with hopes of seeing it calm down enough to still ride El Tour de Tucson Nov 20 ....

Take care of yourself, and it sounds like you are. If I hadn't been so stubborn about all of this my legs may have healed by now, or not. The PT figured me out pretty quickly though, there was no ambiguity at all in the printed instructions I left with. He broke it down into the simplest possible terms:
"No spinning or biking. Walking only. No lower body weight lifting."
My trainer can work with that so at least I can get a good upper body/core workout... it is getting frustrating though because all of this has to be impacting my overall fitness. There isn't anything for it though, not unless I want this to stick around until spring  At least I have not gained any weight, though should probably drop my calories back down to 1,400 until I can start really exercising again.

We'll be miserable together. My weight went up 3 pounds as soon as I started increasing my exercise at the end of September, and I thought it would come down again as I eased up, but nope. So I am back to serious tracking on Weightwatchers, in hopes that I don't balloon w/o much cycling.

When I hit 100 miles a week my weight started to drop again...and then I hurt my leg. So far, at least, my weight is stable. I can still do upper body lifting and walk so hopefully that will help - and I really hope to be able to start getting back on either bike or at least the spinning bike in another week or so. So far, at least, I am only off for a week. Again. So we will see.
If I didn't have to pack tonight I think I would throw my own pity party and have a couple of beers :)
