I've ridden over 1,000 miles since April, but I didn't log them here. Can I go back and do it?

Yes Amanda you can. If you are already on the Bike Journal, you can add miles all at once. If you are not on the Bike Journal you can join and add miles all at once. The directions on how to do that are on the journal site.

It's kind of fun- one guy just joined about a week ago and added something like 5500 miles all at once which bumped the rest of us in that category down-so if you were 125 you became 126 or whatever! THis happens when new people join. But it's a great site so I do recommend you get all those miles in!

I joined yesterday and sent of a cheque today to become a premier member. My husband got me a diary about 2 months ago and I had been keeping miles in that so I added those. It looks rather sad against some of those huge distances but I guess it all adds up. :)

When I have toy-money and buy a computer, then I'll join. The best I can do at the moment is count the squares in the A-Z and take a distance guesstimate for the day's errands. :p I need some regular work so I can commute! I mean, think of all the bike toys £20 I wouldn't be spending on the tube each week could buy..!

I'm pretty sure you can be a member of more than one club, then on each ride you get to pick club gets the miles for that ride. Just like if you have more than one bike. So maybe club TE can get half of your miles???

Go to manage clubs and you'll see how to join another one.

caligurl
09-20-2005, 01:38 PM
ya.... i knew you could join and split your miles... but half the fun of bike journal is to see how high on the "ladder" you can get... if i split my miles... i'd be down on both of them! :D :D :D

now if i could give all my miles to both clubs... then i'd be in both!!!!!! :p

drplasma64
09-20-2005, 05:32 PM
No, the miles are totalled for you as a user, not per bike or per club. I split my miles between 3 bikes - road, hybrid, and "tagalong" - but my user ID gets credit for all of them. I'm sure with the club it works the same.

Oops, I just realized it might not work that way for the clubs. I'm sure your overall standing would have your total - but probably when you look at the club it would only have the club-based miles. Rats!

bingo! :( :( :( i actually joined TE after i realized you had a club... but yes... my mileage for TE was 0 :( :( :( so i unjoined....

too bad we couldn't put all our miles to a couple of clubs! i would love to be a part of both of them!

IMHO- put your mileage in one club. You are then supporting THAT club. If you split mileage, it could be confusing for everyone. My home club is also on BJ, BUT since I joined TE first, then my loyalty is to TE.

caligurl
09-21-2005, 01:31 PM
uhm.... that's what i've been saying.... i don't want to split mileage.... my mileage all goes to one club.... but what i asked slantz for is to be able to join two clubs with ALL miles... of course... i can see where you wouldn't want me to be able to do that! :D :D :D :D :D

nuthatch
09-21-2005, 01:37 PM
I would guess that would be sort of "cooking the books" for accounting of miles purposes. I don't think your total miles would be correct if you could log them under two different clubs because of the way the database works. But I could be wrong...

caligurl
09-21-2005, 01:40 PM
i don't think club miles has anything to do with actual miles.... heck... you don't even have to join a club.. i wasn't a member of any club for a long time..... only joined the one i did join after i was asked multiple times to give them my miles!

it just gives you more motivation and competition to have two places to track how you are doing!

emily_in_nc
09-23-2005, 12:50 PM
Gotta agree with caligurl on this one! I joined Bike Journal and signed up for the Bike Friday club originally. I believe that club was formed before the TeamE one. I later joined the TeamE club, but all my miles are tracked against Bike Friday b/c I didn't want to split my miles. I briefly considered tracking only the miles I ride on my Bike Friday in the Friday club and my Aegis miles in the TeamE club, but then what would I do about my mtb and trainer bike miles??

The solution for me would have all my miles count in both clubs. I wish it would work that way!

Thanks gals for the kind words. Now that I am caught up I will plan on posting my miles after each ride. My computer conked out at 200 miles due to some rain so I had to remove the battery which set it back to 0 so it only says 800 miles. I am looking forward to watching it roll over to 1000 when that time comes. :o

Hot dang! I'm losing my status! I really gotta get a move on! I have to enter last weekend's ride in Maine still. I didn't have a computer, so it'll have to be an estimation.

Actually, the DH's work schedule just changed. The ride I thought I would get today was bumped by him working late....I'm soooooo bummed. I might still get a very itsy bitsy ride in, but nothing like the 40 mile minimum I wanted. There is, of course, the trainer.... :o

The short ride I went on right after my last post turned out to be one of the most "critter-filled" I've ever had.

For starters, I met with three very fast, persistent doggies that chased me down a previously-untried road (never to be again) that was the general smoothness as something out of Paris-Roubaix.....I found myself looking from the road (trying to pick my line through the millions of potholes) to the dogs, all the while growling just as loud or louder as they were!! I can pretty honestly say that it was the worst dog-chase ever, and I thought I was a gonner when I saw the road turn to the left, with nowhere else to go and one dog still giving chase. Lucky for me, he tired before I had to turn. It apparently didn't occur to him that he could just cut the corner and get me that way. Ugh. Had to laugh though, after catching my breath. I was in completely the wrong gear for all of that and still hit 25.5mph...heart rate got up to 193!! Oh my!

The second critter experience was rounding an s-curve, I spied two very fleet-looking, almost wolf-like dogs up on an irrigation bank about 50 yards ahead. I'm pretty sure they saw me, because as soon as I came into view, they scampered off. Now, I am a dog person, and I've also watched many a wildlife documentary about hyenas, etc. These two looked very fast and very possibly wild. For the first time in my biking life, I stopped dead in my tracks. Every little instinct was telling me not to go any further or closer. I knew I had to keep moving, though, and be ready for anything, so I circled in the road a couple times, trying to figure out what to do and maybe see where they went. A car came around the corner just then from that direction, and I flagged it down and asked the driver if the dogs were still up ahead. Getting a "yes" confirmed my suspicion that those dogs DID see me and I was going to be ambushed as their next plaything. Needless to say, fading sunlight and all, I turned around and went the way I came.

Now, you'd think that would be enough excitement for one ride (saw two more loose dogs too), and just as I relaxed and stopped looking for critters, I looked down at the pavement under my wheels just in time to see myself missing a little tiny (rattle??)snake by about a centimeter. Yikes!

Geez...what a ride. All that in only 21 miles.

You gals be careful....don't take chances, either. If I had tried to be "brave" and just go down that road, thinking I was being chicken, I probably would have been laying in it a moment later.

To open roads with no critters....

Yea, I'm thinking about it a little more seriously now. I think being chased pretty good earlier in the ride helped my cautiousness. With the first chase, I didn't have time to grab anything, however. The farmhouse they sprang from was too close to the road. I didn't even have time to grab my usual defense, my water bottle. Still had my lungs, though!

Thanks for that Bikemomma - it would be nice to have something to deter those pesky and dangerous dogs but I would probably spray myself in the Adrenalin rush.

I have often turned back on a road when seeing a dog sort of waiting up ahead it really spookes me.

Do the airhorn things work in deterring dogs? I think Emily mentioned having one on her bike now.

I don't know...I've never used one. But I imagine it would scare the bejiggers out of them...until they learn better. I 'spose you couldn't use it on the same dogs too many times.

I've gotten to use it a few times now, and it does help. It mostly just startles them and can stop them in their tracks, giving you some valuable time to make your getaway. It's not a failsafe as nothing is, but it's just that little extra protection that makes me feel a bit safer out there. It's loud enough that it would also help with motorists if someone doesn't see you, but I haven't had to put it to use for that yet.

Ok, I think I added my miles, at least they are showing up on the total. I got discouraged with keeping up with my miles after my computer quit working in September.:( I feel guilty when I estimate miles. I finally got a new computer for my road bike, but now the road season is pretty well over. I plan to do some serious trainer training over winter, but I guess those miles don't count.

I think someone should figure out a handicapping system for those who can ride year round vs. those of us who can't! :D :D

I was thinking we all might like to see how far over the top we could push it for 2005, like Microsoft exceeding its quarterly expectations or something! :p

And we can do 100,000 in 2006 easy - maybe even 150,000!! Just think of all those peddling legs we've got on the team now. Could we even outdo the top team? (the recumbent team has almost 600,000!!)

Trainer miles count, if you know them. You can mount your speed pickup on the chainstay to ride trainers. Or you can ride rollers and leave the pickup on the front fork.

Your journal can be set up to compare outdoor stats only or not. I have mine checked as outdoor only. I'm just that way. It's hard for me to ride indoors enough to count them. But I prefer people to think I am an outdoors only snob. :D

We got a huge "pile o' miles" from katherinaberge, who is a Cat 3 rider!Yeah - nothing like having a RAAM winner on your team for a little mileage boost!

Hee hee, no kidding.

So I was loafing arourd this morning coming up with the Excuse du Jour for not going out for a ride, and I looked over on bikejournal and realized I was about 6 miles shy of breaking 3000 ! So I hauled my lazy butt out and had a lovely time, thenkewverymuch.

The hardest part is always getting out the door, it seems. :o

Hi Girls,

I just joined; used different user name: "Ninabike". I put my miles in for the year (1,964), so I hope it shows up in the team total. I'm just getting used to how to use the Journal. I'm not sure I will make my goal of 2,500 for the year since it gets dark so early now. Riding during the first few months of 2005 in Southern California was not so good due to all the rain (almost set a record for most ever annual rainfall). Will try to "sneak" out of work early to get in a few extra rides.

Hi ladies,

I can't find this part of the site and would love to add my 2200+ miles to the number. I bought my bike in late March and fell immediately, madly in love with her and riding....after about 10 years of pounding the pavement and trails riding has become a pure joy. The good news is that I find my body is not only happier on the bike but leaner too! Please advise and I'll happily add my miles to the list.

Thanks

I just went to BikeJournal.com.

CorsairMac
11-16-2005, 12:38 PM
Ninas' got it:

BikeJournal.com: the membership is free and we have a team over there - Team Estrogen that you can join as your "virtual" team and log all your miles to if you so choose! (we would LOVE to have your miles - err umm - I meant You! ;) )

As a footnote tho: the site is maintained by an individual and he would appreciate any financial help he can get to support the servers. The annual fee is only $10 and it gives you a yellow jersey and if the team maintains a 50%+ membership (did I get the % right?) we as a team get a polka-dot jersey. I would like to stress tho that membership is NOT required to be able to log there, just appreciated!

PS: Nuthatch is our Team Captain and Welcome on Board Kat!! and way to go JoBob!! yippee skippee

Hee, nuthatch, now you know what it was like for me when I was 'captain' of team Amici Veloci for the Top Hat MS ride this past spring. I would keep raising the pledge goal, and next thing I knew, it was passed again - we had some very intrepid fundraisers on our team, no doubt about that.

We are getting so close that 100,000 mile mark. Come on everybody! Get out there and ride! This is exciting. I think we should set the goal at 150,000 for next year. We can do it!

I personally am so excited to tell everyone I know, "Oh yes, I'm on a team with Cat Berge." ;)

i've actually considered moving my miles form my current club to TE.... i don't post over at the other forum anymore... so why should i be a member? but part of me feels guilty (i have a lot of that lately) for moving them since i was with them for so long.....

this is definitely a friendly and nicer bunch of people (there are a few exceptions... like BC68 and her brother post at the other forum and are great folks!!!! but there are so many rude, obnoxious people at the other forum... i had to leave!)

Well, Yasmin, you've got me rubbing my administrative hands together and chuckling!!

Just log in and on the top navigation bar, pull down the "journal" heading to "add a ride." Your entry will be a bulk entry, so check that box. You can pick today's date as your ride date or any arbitrary date, I suppose. You'll probably also have to guess an average speed for your miles.

Welcome to the team/club!!! :D

PS - I'm even gonna put my team as TE seeing as I'm allowed to. My team in Australia wouldn't be recognised...so here goes.

P.S. Yasmin, thanks for the "petitepower" miles!!! :) You know, I was thinking I might have a chance to move up in miles because I planned to keep commuting in the winter, but I forgot about the southern hemisphere riders - it's almost summer for you guys!

Oh yes, it's the start of the season here - although the winter has been so mild that I've managed to train right through, which is a total novelty! It's starting to warm up nicely here Down Under.
I'm still trying to get my head around Christmas in summer though - it feels so wrong and hearing Winter Wonderland on the radio blows my mind!!
My boss informed me that we're taking 4-6 weeks off for the holidays ... and while the downside to this is I won't get paid at all :( , it also means that I've got LOTS of time to train hard throughout the summer!

I've often wondered how our southern neighbors feel celebrating in the warmth when the entire English speaking Christmas heritage is geared towards a England/New England winter (In the bleak midwinter, etc.). Do you girls want to share any of your local Christmas spin with us? Help us feel the warmth of the holidays down under (can you tell I'm waking up to 8 degrees here in Chicago?)! :D

Our last Xmas in Aust it was 41C or about 106F so we stayed inside for most of the day with the Aircon on. We always have a big seafood spread for lunch (no way Im cooking hot lunch when its that hot).

The kids decided Santa must wear shorts and Tshirt under his suit so he wont be too hot when he gets down to us in Aust.

On boxing day we would normally go to the beach or to a friends for a big BBQ.

Another thing that is different is the school year finishes in early Dec so the kids are on their big holiday break which is lots of fun. I guess when you grow up with Xmas being in summer it seems normal. This will be our second Xmas in the Northern Hemisphere (we arrived in the USA last Xmas Eve) and its lovely to experience Xmas in the Winter but I still do miss the thought of lazy beach days and BBQ over the Xmas holidays.

I'm from England originally but have lived in Australia for 37years (emigrated at 12) . It still feels odd to me having Christmas in warm weather. Just goes to show how powerful those formative years are. However, I'm not complaining. Weather in Adelaide at the moment is changeable: 28oC (82oF) one day, 18oC (62oF) with thunder, winds/heavy rains etc the next. These days the real scorchers seem to come Jan/Feb when it can reach 45oC (115oF).

I tried to do my part, guys, by going on a ride in December, for the first time ever. I am 99 miles short of my goal, which s****. I could have easily reached the 2500 mile mark, with a bit more motivation, but after I came back from my cycling trip to Europe, I slacked off a bit. I think I was around #9 or 10 for most of the season (I know I can't compete with the warm weather people) and now I am barely in the top 20.

Next year!

OK the blowing thing must have worked because there is going to be a break in the rain and wind tomorrow up my way (at least that is what the weather site is saying). I can cope with the rain but hate that wind so Ive organized a sitter for the boys and Im heading out. Could be my last chance before the new year if that wind starts up again. The weather site is predicting some nasty stuff turning up this weekend ----Hmm Happy Stormy New Year I guess.

Hey, I *luv* getting "credit' for my 1500 (personal best so far; it's usually mid April or may before I hit 1000).

Had 6 ladies and 3 gents come to my presentation; the gents were all guys who already ride, and the ladies were people who had bikes and rode a *little* and were hesitating because of traffic, pretty much all of 'em. This made it really good to have the guys there to repeat "yes, you can ride on that road!"
