as some of you know i fractured my shoulder on labor day. i went back to the dr this past thursday and he thought calcium might start forming in the space. well it hasn't and i have to put off physical therapy. what i can do is take off the sling and move my forearm up and down so my elbow does not kink up.

needless to say the dr has now ruled out the pumpkin patch ride that we planned on riding since last year. i insisted that my little group ride anyway which will most likely be the 50 instead of the hundred. it is my husbands 1st organized ride and doesn't think he is ready for the hundred anyway. i will stay at the start/finish line with my teeshirt of the ride i didn't do and sit and chat with other cyclists. if i can be of help at a table with my one left arm i will be happy to help out.

i forgot to ask the dr about me getting on my trainer. i have another appt. next thurs. so my husband said wait until then. the weather has been so iffy here that i only got to go on one walk during the week. needless to say im going a little stir crazy. im sure next week will be better.

well there is my up date. at least reading this board is a huge highlight of my day as it is the only highlight. oh, and last night i read denises trip to pei. i enjoy reading that also.

I can sympathise Jo-n-NY
I broke my wrist (with-in half hour of trying clipless  ) and was off my bike, and everything else, for 10 weeks.
It will feel so good when you get out there again. In the meantime, do what you can without overdoing it, and keep smiling at the thoughts of stuff you will do :)

Hi Joann, thanks for the update. When you first posted about your shoulder, I felt sure you wouldn't be able to (or want to, if you tried it) ride for awhile, simply based on my husband's broken clavicle experience. I am really sorry, but broken bones take time to heal, and even though the upper body is not as important in cycling as the lower, it's still an integral part of riding - just think how it would feel to that shoulder if you pounded over a pothole (OWWWIEEE!) :(

Seems like trainer riding might be a possibility, tho, especially if you could set your bike up to be as upright as possible so you won't have to put much weight on that arm. When I first started back on the trainer after my accident, I used my mountain bike for a more upright position (handlelbars higher than saddle) and found that really helped me ease back into it.

Hope you'll heal up quickly, but from my fractured pelvis experience, I can say with assurance that you will be back - it just may not be quite as quickly as you'd hoped. But in the scheme of things, it will be a short time when you look back from down the road, pedaling, of course....! :)

Healing wishes,

Emily

P.S. I rode 40 miles today - first time since my accident. I felt great!! :D

thanks much cyber-cycling-buddies.

emily i think of you all the time to find myself lucky. if something was meant to happen, this is not half as bad as what you went through and told my husband as much. i told him about your accident when it happened to you.

oh, and a huge congratulations on you 40 mile ride. that is absolutely wonderful.

i have one of those plastic pieces to put under my front tire to lift it. it has 3 different levels of height. but i just figure that first just to sit upright and pedal without holding on. i do that in my trainer workout just for a change of position. plus i do not plan on using much resistance.

lol....bouncy, i am getting faster and faster pecking along with one finger. forget yhe caps though. that will be stretching.

Jo, last winter a woman in my spin class had shoulder surgery. She'd come in with her sling on and ride along gently, sometimes sitting on the side for a bit. So maybe the trainer will be ok - are they real stable? I've never seen one, actually. The spin bikes are VERY stable.

Quick mending and reiki vibes from all us new-age goddesses. ;)

Hopefully your shoulder is stable enough!

I don't know if its applicable, but I've done spin class with a sling (due to a minor rotator cuff injury) and found out that its still a pretty good workout. You do get a few odd looks in class.

Probably more related, an xbf had used his trainer during his recovery of a dislocated shoulder. No racing saddles (haha) and readjust your bike because you won't be able to lean forward.

Wishing you the best of luck to your healing and cycling addiction! :)

It's not an addiction, I can stop this any time I want to...ooh, nice bike, never mind.

Yeah yeah - just one more ride and I promise I'll never ride again. Sure...

Keep up the positive attitude, Jo! Helping out at the ride instead sounds like a decent compromise. Hopefully, you'll get to ride the trainer, still. From the others' comments, it looks like a real possibility to me....

Congrats, Emily, on your comeback milestone! 40 miles is an accomplishment ANY time, but especially for you, after your injuries. Way to go!

Take care...

At least it looks like the trainer should be able to work. We don't want you going stir-crazy. Hope that shoulder heals itself quickly.

thanks everyone. i have a cycle-ops fluid which seems very sturdy. i took a walk with my daughter today to cvs and the food store. oh yes, and our little ****z tu buddy in his dog stroller (completely my daughters idea getting the stroller, but the cutest thing). but that was a very leisurely mile walk and felt so good to do something. i am up 3lbs already i don't want to go up any more. once i can start peddling at little intervals during the day i know i will feel so much better.

i have also been keeping my sling off for short whiles during the day. i am still sleeping in a recliner and cannot wait to get back into a bed.

latelatebloomer-what a consolation, thanks. what my little peddaling is a far cry from a spin class so you i am sure the dr. will give me the ok.

Joann -

I'm sorry about my late entry in this discussion - just got home from my tour in PEI. But ouch! I'm really worry to hear about your injury. Although I know it's hard to stay off of your bike, please give yourself a chance to heal. The trainer sounds like a good starting point.

Sending big healing thoughts your way.

Jo- Know anything about calcium supplements? If you want more info, just email me and I'll send you some. Should help with the healing process, but I'll let you be the judge!

Hope you can at least start some spinning just to keep in shape!!!! Much luck on your recovery as well!

thank you nancy, i have been taking citracal + d 1200mg for years and stilll do. the dr said that was good. i had my dr appt today and calcium just began to form. i can now sit hold my arm down and move it like a pendelum. i also am working on straightening my elbow. ihe does not want to start pt yet. i go back in 10 days.

i can go in our hot tub, but when i asked about going on the trainer he looked at me like i had two heads. i said other women cyclists do that have had shldr fractures. yhen my husband said i can only go on if i have someone with me.
he is on a ride now preparing for the pumpkin patch ride we were both suppose to ride next sunday, i have my trainer out all ready too hook up. i am trying to decide, mtn with smooth tires or road bike wich i think might be a bit high to get on. well we will see tonight which works better.

sorry to ramble so off the calcium topic, i have too much time on my hands.
