View Full Version : Question for Kindle users

I get more curious about the Kindle as the price is less than half of what it used to be - and is now even less than the Sony Reader. A question for Kindle owners - is the screen glossy at all? I like the e-Ink technology (my Sony reader had it), but I do NOT like a glossy screen like my Sony reader had. My Sony reader had a touch screen that was quite glossy. Their other model did not have a glossy screen and I found it perfect. Sony, however, keeps discontinuing models and releasing new ones - and the Kindle's price keeps dropping...

The Kindle screen is not glossy at all. I can read for much longer periods on my kindle than I can with a "real" book and in all types of light, even outside in the sun. I am very very happy with the Kindle and highly recommend it!

No, it's not glossy at all. I sold my Kindle 2 and bought the Kindle 3 and I love it. I'm very happy with it.

I really want to do that as well, but I just got my kindle 2 in february and it seems decadent to do that.
It's not glossy at all, Catrin - go into Target, they have kindles on display that you can play with and look at the screens.

Yes, I thought so too, but for now I was able to get more for my Kindle 2 than I paid for the Kindle 3, so that made me feel a little bit better about it.

Do they? I didn't think I could actually look at them anywhere! I had the second version of the Sony Reader which I loved - but gave it to my sister - and bought the touch-screen version which I liked much less and eventually sold it for more than I paid for it (for bike stuff).
Has anyone had problems with their Kindle, or trouble getting help from Amazon if you needed support for it?

We've never had any Kindle problems - hubby has a Kindle2i, I had the Kindle 2 and now the Kindle 3.
Amazon has always had the best customer service. I bought an exercise bike through them and the seat had a tiny split on it. They gave me a $50 credit to get a new seat.
Best Buy also has the new Kindle in stock.

You can take a look at the nooks at Barnes and Noble. I have one and it isn't glossy either.

My brother was sitting on a tile floor reading his kindle and accidently dropped it - it hit the corner and basically it looked like the screen cracked. He emailed amazon's warranty service and told them that it fell from less than a foot and there was a well known weak spot in the corner. Amazon basically said, Okay, you're still in your 1 year warranty period and sent him a new one.
I've dropped mine while standing up and had it hit the sidewalk without it breaking.

Hrm. Did you ebay or craigslist? The kindle 3 is just that little bit smaller and lighter with longer battery life. I've biked about 300 miles with the kindle in my backpack and maybe paddled a couple hundred miles with it in my kayak (I stick nautical maps on it and it's nice to read while camping) - so I can almost justify having a teensy bit lighter of one.

Have you ever used your Nook for downloading library books? I saw on another board where Nook users got library cards from the Philadelphia library (for $15 since they were out of state). They were enjoying using it and had more books than they could read!

I knew that more and more libraries were doing this, but I wasn't aware that I could use a library pretty much anywhere! I will have to check into that. Thanks.

I've looked at it, but for some reason didn't care for it though I can't put my finger on the reason for it.
Back when I still had my Sony Reader I did check out a couple of books from the library on it - that was nice.

LOL, this is from the Kindle Board but it is too funny not to share. :D
The post is by NookNoMore and titled "Nook Be Gone! Kindle Is My New Knight in Shining Graphite!"
I was once a sinner. Last Christmas I found myself perplexed untangling the intricacies of the age old question "Should I buy the Nook or the Kindle?" The Kindle was my first choice, the solid kingdom of Amazon behind this firm reader, the better prices, the better selection, it was looking to be a Kindle Christmas indeed until I researched the Nook. I am ashamed to admit it but I was seduced by the Nook the very first night I laid eyes on this maiden. It might have been her Android system or her shiny color screen but whatever it was my credit card was out of my wallet faster than the fat lady whips out her silverware at Home Town Buffet.
After a delay, being the Nook was in its infancy, a fresh child delivered for the world the coddle, it took extra time for the delivery. But, on Christmas day, as odd as it seems yes I made myself wait for Christmas to open my own gift, I tore into the package like a teenage virgin undresses his date on prom night. I stared at her body for a solid 10 minutes before I began to explore her wonders. It was then my nostrils began to burn with an aroma I had smelled before. It was the smell of fresh poo. This new child, this infant, had pooed herself.
The battery life lasted just slightly longer than that teenage sack of hormones on prom night. And the dictionary function. O yes, the dictionary function. Besides every other word not being in the dictionary......the amount of time it took to scroll down to the word in question.... It was often after finally getting the definition (when available) I would walk outside and cast my eyes to the heavens looking for Jesus's second coming. It had taken so long I was sure the rapture was near or perhaps I had missed it and Jesus was so mad over my Nook buying decision he left me behind. I sent my squire off on my trusted horse to the kingdom of Barnes and Nobel to give to their King Lord Nobel. The message was a recommendation that a warning box pop up on the eink screen of the nook when a user tried to use the dictionary. "PLEASE REMOVE ALL SHARP OBJECTS WITHIN A HALF A MILE FROM YOUR PRESENCE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO USE THE DICTIONARY". I did this because I care about people across this great flat land.
It was only this week that I began to court another Maiden, Lady Kindle. Lady Kindle was unquestionable lighter than Lady Nook, who obviously spent much of her free time in the Castle's Kitchen feasting on cake, pie, racks of lamb, and jars of Lard. She was a little heavy compared to Lady Kindle. Lady Kindle did not share the dictionary problem. You could use her 5 way (don't ask) to navigate down to the word and BAM there was the definition. I found this Kinky and it turned me on very much.
I bought my new Lady Kindle a case, the black one with the light, and a wrapasol protector for the screen and the front and back of the device. I loved how the case Looked on Lady Kindle. Sexy. Classy. It turned me into a mad wild beast of lust. What I didn't like was her underwear, the Wrapasol, it annoyed me thus I demanded she take off her underwear. I declared a rule onto all of my kingdom that COMMANDO was the only way to strut your stuff. I loved her physcial keyboard so much more than the digital hoopla Lady Nook had. One day this might be satisfying but for now Lady Kindle has the right stuff. I looked Lady Nook in the eye and told her I was selling her on eBay to another Kingdom. She asked me Why and I replied "Lady Nook you never satisfied me!"
I am a sinner no more! HAIL KINDLE!
Thank you for reading!

Scroll? You mean you can't just touch a word and have the definition come up, like you can on the Sonys?
(as long as you're not reading a .pdf)
