Automatically implies it's the cyclist's fault. But if she was headed southbound, and was hit by a southbound vehicle...I have to wonder if someone got impatient and tried to go around when they shouldn't.

There really isn't enough information to say, but it the article makes it sound like she made a left turn without making sure there wasn't traffic coming up from behind her.

Left turns are dangerous for so many reasons, and we had this problem not too long ago on our shop ride when someone at the front started to move left in order to make a left turn at an intersection. He said, "clear back" and riders started to move left behind him, but the road was not clear, at least not for the whole group. Everyone was fine, as enough people didn't blindly follow him, but that, and this article, should serve as a reminder to check and double check for traffic before moving into a lane.

How tragic! Once again, the blame is put on the cyclist. Unfortunately, the pattern won't change until attitudes change. I wish I knew the solution.

It's not clear who was at fault. Sometimes the cyclist is at fault.

If gas cost $10.00 gallon and our main mode of transportation becomes such that automobile becomes the alternate mode of transportation then the attitude will change.

Yeah, it would be easier to visualize the situation if we knew if she was on the 4-lane divided section of that road (north of the mentioned intersection) or the two-lane section south of it.
