If I turn the volume on my ipod up loud I can ride without an earphone but tuck it into the neck of my jersey and still enjoy the music.
All I have to say about today's ride (40 miles at 16.7 which for me is an exceptionally good speed) wad deifnitely helped by the fact that I was hearing Irish jigs and dance music for most of the ride.

Sounds a good way to listen to music without wearing earphones, which I guess is a bit risky.
Bet you had a grin on your face, listen to that music too.
How long did the 40 miles take?

Irish jigs and reels? That's just about all I ever listen to on the bike! Any particular artist/band? I'll have to try your method w/ the ipod.

clockwork orange- the 40 mile ride took 2 hours and 20 minutes of riding time and a half hour for the iced latte and another 15 minutes at the end to check tires, lube, grease and generally prep for the next rid.
The name of the band I was listening to is Melach Doris Ceili Band.
I can also strongly recommend a group called Buckwheat Zydeco which does southern zydeco and Louisiana style music as well as any cd which combines The Athenians and Greek Rembetika music.
