My first sprint tri is Oct 10th. I had planned to wear a Zoot tri top and Under Armour compression shorts. I've tested them both and they work. Then I went to one of the tri training sessions and the instructor said that last year it was freezing and she wore a long sleeve top. Now I don't know what to wear.

So you put a long sleeve top over your tri top? Do you wear it for the swim too? What long sleeve top do you recommend?

Unless your tri is indoors, most people will wear wetsuits for the swim. Unless you're used to pretty cold water (most likely under 70 degrees F depending on your location), I'd recommend getting one.

I wouldn't wear long sleeves for the swim under a wetsuit. Depending on the actual temperature, I'd probably wear my tri suit + a cycling jersey for the bike, and probably have arm warmers to put on just in case. I'd also take a light zip jacket just in case that would be the easier solution.

A wet longsleeve will be COLD. because you have more surface on which water is evaporating.
anything you put on after the swim has to go on wet skin and that will be difficult. Arm warmers may work. A vest or zip jacket goes on easier although it will be less aero. who cares.

if you can't afford a wet suit right now think about renting. rent for the weekend before to practice swimming in it and getting it off.

It's a pool swim and that part is indoors, but the bike and run will be outside. I was planning on just the tri top and compression shorts for the swim. Do you think a long sleeve running tee would be good for the bike/run or shoudl I get a full zip long sleeve jersey for the bike and then switch to a running tee for the run?

Of course, after I figure this all out, I'm sure it will be 78 degrees in Houston that day and I won't need it. Then again, if I don't give it thought, it will end up being 50 and I'll wish I had. Isn't that how it always goes?

I'd just put on a long sleeved something (jersey or running tee long enough to cover your back) and wear it for the bike and run. If you're concerned about getting too warm between the bike and run, arm warmers might work, but they might also be hard to put on. I'd probably wear one of those long sleeved running tech tees or wool that breathe well in case I got overheated (and considering my body will still be wet...)

I would pack with you the short sleeved and long sleeved options just in case. ;)
