I finally selected fenders for my LHT - they will be in next week. I chose these SKS fenders (http://www.rei.com/product/684330). Not like I don't like that stripe down my backside when the pavement is wet or anything

Am looking at the Blackburn MTN-1 rear rack (http://www.blackburndesign.com/racks.html#mtn_1). It is rated to hold up to 30 pounds, which I think is fine for now. Perhaps I will have to go to a more sturdy rack in the future, but I can afford this one now. Is this a good choice for an affordable rack? Is there a better? 30 pounds should be more than enough to get me through my brevet - I just want these things on my bike as soon as possible so I can get used to their being there.

I certainly don't see them adding noticeable weight - though it might be interesting when I start carrying stuff on the rack...

Blackburn makes great racks. I have a Blackburn Expedition (probably an EX-1 now) that has served me very well over the years. I don't think the 30 lbs limit will be an issue unless you're doing long, self-supported tours. 30 lbs has been more than enough for my shopping and commuting to work.

Congratulations on the fenders & rack! Now you are a REAL cyclist in my book. :) I recommend a flatbed trailer for >30 pounds!

I was thinking about the odds of needing to carry more than 30 pounds  I know people carry a lot more than that in fully loaded touring - but right now 30 pounds just plain sounds like more then enough!

Hi Catrin,

I love the choice of fenders. They should look smashing on your blue LHT. I noticed that the link took me to a page that said the fenders fit 700c wheel size. Is your trucker one of the bigger sizes that has the 700c wheels? If yes, have you had any trouble with toe slap?

I just noticed the size on that page. I have second smallest size for the LHT, and the fenders do come for 26-inch wheels. My LBS had to special order them and will be in next Thursday. Apparently they don't sell many fenders for 26-inch wheels, or not enough to keep the SKA fenders in stock. They were not that much more expensive over the Planet Bike fenders they had, and I like them better.

What is toe slap?

I think she meant toe overlap, i.e., where your pedal in its most forward position overlaps the front wheel. I have it on both of my bikes, but it's never been much of a problem unless I'm not paying attention.

I have not noted this with either bike, but I don't yet have my fenders :) I am looking forward to having them. I may have to wait two more weeks to get my rear rack, but that isn't bad.
