I'm not vegan, but whenever I go cruising down the mustard/mayonnaise aisle I'm curious what "mayonnaise" made of soy would taste like. I didn't want to sink $5+ only to loathe it. Are they any good? is there a particular brand that's better than the others?

I just use plain, non-fat yogurt. Sometimes I mix in a little low fat mayo.

I'm probably not a very good person to respond, since I detest mayonnaise and anything that resembles it...but olive oil is great where mayonnaise is normally used.

well, I must admit my use of mayonnaise is fairly limited. These days I only use it for egg salad sandwich, and that happens maybe once a month.

But what I'd like to know is, if olive oil can be used as a substitute for mayo, I don't really see it happening with egg salad?

I use it so rarely that it's not even worth it to me to buy it. Homemade is so much better anyway, and the Joy of Cooking blender recipe is super easy.

Some olive oil can be a little strong. Usually I use canola (organic only, because almost all other canola is GMO) or safflower.

Can't help you, there. I don't do egg salad, either:rolleyes:.

But if you just want some on your BLT, olive oil is great.

Haven't made egg salad in a long time. I have recipe somewhere for a fake egg salad..which uses pressed tofu (it's cut into cubes), mustard, some seasonings, etc. It actually tasted good.

I do eat eggs...at home, egg substitute. In restaurants is when I will have an egg done in certain ways.

I've made tofunaise before. Silken tofu, a bit of oil and seasonings.

Blend, done. Might turn out runnier than mayo.

I made a lovely lemon-Tofunaise once with lemon oil and lemon juice. it was yummy.

Grapeseed Vegenaise is wonderful. We don't get it very often, but it's good stuff. I never liked mayo or miracle whip growing up, but I love vegenaise. It's tangier than the others.

+1. Vegenaise and hummus are excellent mayo replacers.

I think we can get Veganaise here, but i'll check on it when I go down to Seattle next time for the grapeseed kind. I'm not that into mayonnaise, but some alternative might be good to mix up my salad dressings!

I love the salad dressing blends from Penzey's Spices and mix them with vegenaise and a little water for salads all summer long. I've tried a couple of the vegenaise varieties and grapeseed is still my favorite. The shelf stable stuff, nayonnaise, is supposedly wretched.

Mayonnaise made with soy oil is mayonnaise!

I think they're talking about mayonnaise made with tofu instead of eggs.

Vegenaise is amazing. Tastes just like I remember Mayonnaise to taste like. My husband and I always have it in the fridge and we usually eat it daily on a sandwich, just like normal mayonnaise. Oh, and no artery clogging cholesterol!

The other brands suck.

+1 on Grapeseed Vegenaise - I can't stand the soy based version but the grapeseed is quite tasty.

good to know about nayonnaise being wretched. We get them here, and it's a whopping $9. I didn't see any veganaise, so I'll look for it when I'm down in the states next time.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen Vegenaise brand products here in Saskatoon (even at Superstore if I remember correctly). I think that they aren't shelf-stable, so you would find them in the fridge section.
