Than a fresh homegrown thick sliced tomato sandwich on good bread with nothing but mayo, salt and pepper?

bought fresh tomatoes this morning at Farmer's Market. No mayo will ever touch them, just some salt and pepper. ;)

the BEST tomato I ever had was when I was 16 and visiting my grandparents. From their garden my grandmother picked off a softball sized tomato, and it was SOOOO good, we actually had it for breakfast. Nothing store bought even compares to it. Just tomato, maybe cracked black pepper. Definitely no mayo.

Best peach I ever had in my life was during that trip, too. Again, softball sized, and oh-so juicy and sweet.

I also love tomato sandwiches with mayo. Tastes like summer. I don't grow my own anymore, but I get beautiful tomatoes from a farmer who sets up a stand on the side of the road, with a little old lady and her young great grand daughter working. Buying my veggies from them makes me happy. It's like going back in time.

It reminds me of what we lived on at the beach.
Mater sammiches and corn on the cob from roadside farm stands :)

Mmmm, I'd have to put some bacon on that.

We have tomatoes coming out our ears. They are so good.... I will miss them in the fall :(

I had three tomatoes with some sea salt for dinner last night, and someone asked me: where was the mayo, white bread and bacon???
:p

Hold the mayo.

As for sweet corn, it's grow your own or nuthin' (and mine's ready for dinner tonight :D). The sugars start turning into starch the minute it's picked.

My dad used to eat them with mayo too. I'll take them that way or with just S&P. Thank goodness for foods from South America! I wouldn't want to live with out really nice 'maters, 'taters and chilis!

No, though a BLT is pretty good too.

OMG how can you not love hummus?

Chickpea, fava, black bean, white bean, you really don't like any kind?

What a deprived life you must have! :p

Hummus is good but keep it far, far away from my tomata samwhich.

I'll take my tomatoes from the farm down the street with a drizzle of olive oil, lovingly brought back from Spain in my suitcase, mozzarella, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Mmmm, can I come over and eat with you? That sounds delicious, too!

(I'm picking tomatoes tonight...guess what I'm doing with them?!?)

I wonder how we'd see preferences if the responses were broken down by region?

My husband loves hummus. i just don't like it.
Good thing he loves it though, because i have found after years of experimentation that the plastic on the bottom of the hummus containers makes THE perfect mountain dulcimer pick i have ever found to use, so every time he eats a hummus tub I get a precious new pick. :D

Hummus and tahini in a pita with tomatoes with olive oil and olive oil dip with spices. Soul food! Stuffed grape leaves with lamb! MMMMM. Middle eastern mojo like my mom and aunt used to make.

Ahh memories.

They do this wonderful "pa amb oli" in Mallorca. It's basically a nice slab of country bread with garlic and olive oil rubbed in, fresh tomatoes, Manchego cheese and either thin-sliced or rough-cut Serrano ham, depends on who makes the snack. Garnished with big green olives and/or sweet onions.

It's a slice of heaven. I could live on that stuff for the rest of my life!

I love hummus, but hard to find ones that aren't too garlicky. I sometimes just take a can of chick peas and blender it with lemon or apple cider vinegar. Nice and plain :)

Ok, wow.

Love tomato with goat/mozarella boccocini/brie cheese and fresh basil sandwich. However a perfectly ripe beefsteak tomato is gorgeous by itself.

I like hummus alot but if it's in a sandwich usually with some multiple types of veggies inside.

NwbyNW, please, that combination sounds to die for.
I miss the Serrano ham, but I found the 3 milk cheese, along with machengo right in the grocery store. I could live on tapas now!

Pray tell, how did this start? Did you grow up poor and that's all that was in the food bank that week?
Were you stranded on top of a mountain?
We want to know.

Well, yes, I grew up poor, but there aren't any mountains in Nebraska and we didn't get food from the food bank (was there even such a thing back then?)

Not sure how it started, but my sister loves pb&tomato, too.

Zen, remind me next time we meet up to give you some of my pickled garlic. My DH puts some up every year and we have garlic that's over 9 yrs. old. The longer it's in vinegar, the sweeter and softer it gets. Nothing better than spreading it on a hunk of warm bread.

How about fresh tomato with fresh mozzarella and fresh spinach leaves?

Oh my, this sounds wonderful! The old fashioned tomato sandwich with nuttin' but mayo is a comfort food from childhood, for sure. What about with fresh mozzarella and fresh basil?

I love hummus. Especially MY hummus...but I am with Zen that it doesn't belong even close to my tomato sandwich.

I've a friend who loves PB, tomato and mayo sandwiches... now that just doesn't sound good but like she says, don't knock it till you try it :)

I like cheese instead of mayo with mine. A nice cheddar, especially if you add it to a BLT is a good sub, or you can forgo the bacon and use smoked cheddar...

Guess I have to go shopping today.

One of my favorite soups is an adaptation of a Brazilian dish, which likely has roots in African cuisine. The 'broth' doesn't actually involve broth at all. It's tomatoes (the juice out of a can of them), beer, and ground peanuts. I've never put them in because it's too much work to grind them up.
