Sitbone hematoma

:eek: Help! I'm not sure how it happened, but I've developed a subcutaneous hematoma just to the front of my right sitbone. I haven't ridden in two weeks until this morning, and it's now swollen and irritated again. My doctor didn't want to dry to drain it, wanted me to wait two weeks and then she'd send me to a surgeon to remove it. It's about an inch long and feels like it's about the size of my pinkie. Any suggestions? I'm a little freaked out (I hate needles and the thought of being cut on). Could it have started from the stitching on my saddle? Sob - I miss riding.

Is it an actual bone hematoma? (like, bleeding under the periosteum from a fracture?)

Is it a tendon? Is it the muscle tissue?

Is it just the skin that bled? (subcutaneous could be from the muscle tissue, and just hanging out under the skin layer, or could be from the skin itself)

Does the doc know where the actual source of the bleeding is?

I doubt it's the stitching of the saddle - that would more likely lead to a surface critter than to a critter deep to the skin.

Can you take your entire bike to a pelvic rehab PT and have them check your fit? Take any other saddles you may have lying around, too. Even if the PT doesn't know bike fit, they *will* be able to see how the saddles interact with your body as you pedal.

Thanks Chicken! I thought it was a vein, but let my GP convince me that it was a hematoma. It's located right next to the crease where my hiney meets my leg (guess that really rules out my sitbones causing it) and right now hurts like the devil. Yes. It was smaller before I hopped back on the bike yesterday, but definitely still there. I've got an appointment at a vein center in two weeks, but it sounds like maybe I should let it run it's course. Good thing the temps here are in the 100's and too hot for me to want to ride.

After visiting the vein doctor, and having an ultrasound of the area (crease at thigh) - the doctor said he thought it was a sebaceous cyst about 3/4" long and 1/2" wide. I had an appointment to have it removed this morning. The surgeon told me that I would be off the bike for 6-10 weeks :eek: and have about an 1.5" long and deep incision, and wouldn't I rather wait til it got cold enough so that I wouldn't mind being off the bike. Hell, I've been off the bike for 4 weeks already. He said it wouldn't hurt the cyst to ride and to take ibuprofen for any swelling. I'm wondering if I made a mistake not just getting it out today and getting it over with. :( One bonus is that the Dr. rides, so he understands, though he did suggest I take up running...

What's the likelihood of that cyst rupturing? I know sebaceous cysts can be quite nasty if they become ruptured or infected... and given the location, infection could happen easily if ruptured. I think the entire wall/coating of the cyst needs to be removed to ensure the cyst doesn't recur - that may be harder if it does rupture.

Some of the medical people on here might have better information :)

my cat gets sebaceous cysts and the vet can drain them. they come back unless completely removed but if yours can be drained and then removed later it might be nice then you can be on the bike some?
