My little welsh corgie Sadie died last night of poisoning. I have not idea what she got into or where she got it. She was fine yesterday morning when I let her out, when she came back in a while later I noticed she was trembling, but thought it might be that the workmen in the house were banging and crashing. By 10:00 am she was breathing rapdily and drooling excessively so I took her to the vet who kept her to do blood work and x rays. They called ab a half hour later to tell me her platelet count was very low and that she had had a convulsion so they were going to put her on muscle relaxants and morphine until they could get the xrays . By the time they called back to tell me that the x rays were clear except for some shading around the gall bladder, I had crawled the house and the yard on my hands and knees looking for anything that she could have gotten into to no avail.

The upshot is that they kept her overnight to do a stomach scan , the vet called me and said that the scan was clear and that Sadie was looking a bit brighter and had eaten a bit, he was " guardedly optimisic." At midnight they called to say that she was convulsing and that they were going to intubate her and at 1:00 they called again to say that the pain medication and anti convulsants were having no effect and that the convulsing had gotten worse. I gave them permission to end her suffering.

This is so totally unexpected - I have been nursing my geriatric cat (20 years old) through his last days and dreading waking up to find him dead in the morning for the last couple of weeks, not to mention the added stress of hoping my FIL ( 88, diabetic, blind and nearly deaf) makes it through the night that this is just too much.

I am beginning to think that this new house is cursed.

Poor Sadie, she was my boon companion and such a dear sweet companion . She will be missed.

I feel so lost and at sea.

Oh, Marni, how sad for you and your family. I'm so sorry. Can the vet tell what it might have been? I wish I had some words that could really comfort you, but I don't. Just a hug.

Oh no :( I'm so sorry Sadie had to go through that, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a similar scare with a cat and we never found the source of poison either - ended up assuming it was an antifreeze leak from a neighbor's car.

Here's a (hug) for you.

So very sorry. My hubby's idiot uncle was bragging about putting out poison for raccoons. Until I pointed out to him that if a raccoon will eat it, then someone's pet would likely find it appealing, as well. He shut up pretty fast after that.

Horrible that your sweet pup had to go through that. I hope she was not in much actual pain. (((Marni)))

Oh, Marni, I'm so sorry. My heart and prayers go out to you. It's hard to lose a pet under any circumstance, but this sounds particularly rough. I'll be thinking of you and your beloved Sadie. (((((()))))

(((Marni))) - I am so sorry, I don't have any thing else to say. You definitely fought for her and luckily she was in vet care quickly.

Was maybe one of the neighbors putting down weed kill or something similar? We try to avoid poisons but if I have to use them I tell my neighbors, one has little boys and the other 3 dogs. Fortunately they will do the same but some people are just clueless, we had a cat poisoned accidentally when I neighbor had an anti-freeze spill while working on a car.

Oh Marni! :( :( :( They always seem to leave us when we're the most vulnerable. :( I hope your decision to release her from her pain will bring comfort to you as you come to terms with her untimely, senseless death. Sometimes the most difficult part of letting one go is making the decision to do so. :( Perhaps as a living memorial to her you may find that planting a beautiful tree like a dogwood or a butterfly bush will help you as you mourn her loss. It will help bring you hope and the promise of the renewal of life. My thoughts are with you.

Oh how sad. This has been a rough couple of weeks for TE members losing beloved pets :( . I second sundial's idea on the living memorial. Perhaps it will bring much needed good vibes to your home.
