Just wondering if anyone out there has used or uses BMX tracks for some mtb skills? A few of the good mtn bikers in our area have suggested venturing to one & having a go.

It's all part of my goal for improving certain skills and in this case, momentum & dips on trails. (hard to explain without showing the exact bit of trail.....) Is 1hr each week sufficient time??

I'll have a peek on Youtube to see what i can dig up.

Do it! First, it is so much fun. Second, it will improve SOME of your skills. Remember that a BMX track is short, and the intent of getting over some of the small ups is NOT to pedal, but to "pump" over them (thus, the birth of the pump track). I raced BMX a couple of times on my MTB, and had a blast. It does help if you have some rolling sections of trail.

There's a competition-level BMX track down the street from me, and a pump track down the street the other way. However, I don't have a mountain bike or BMX bike so I don't use them. When I was a teen, I rode BMX quite a bit. It's great for bike handling skills. I think it could only help your mountain biking skills.

My brother, who is an excellent MTB rider and BMX rider, regularly rides on a pump track. He and his neighbor built one in the neighbors yard. It's really good for core strength.

Good thread. I was wondering the same thing. The closest single track is about an hour's drive. But there's a really nice BMX track about 5 minutes from here. It's on a person's private property but they open it up to the public on certain nights. I didn't know if it would be worth checking out or not. But after reading these posts, I think I might.

Do it! In the winter I spend a lot of time up at Ray's Indoor MTB Park in Cleveland OH. My technical skills got super better.

I haven't ventured on the pump track, but we have a BMX style trail at one of our local trails. It is like a roller coaster, up and down, fast, twisty, berms. It is fun and the fast nature really pushes your skills. My continued goal is to lay off the brakes and just fly like the better riders. If I can do that then momentum should keep me from having to pedal most of the uphills. Try it, you may see something that will build your skills. :)

:o That was fun but it just reinforced what I already know but am unsure how to stop...:o

Momentum along the rollers is ok for a while but then my mind can't keep up with it & when it comes to getting up the steep roller things..I don't know how to attack them. I have an idea but not sure.

I think i forget that I have a left leg & want to do everything with my right side..:o (that's off the bike as well...)
