Today, parked at the lot next to us, was a grilled cheese truck. That's right, a truck that drives around and makes gourmet grilled cheese. It's run by a local cheese shop and blends 6 different types of cheese and slops them onto tasty sourdough. And you can get bacon, avocado, ham, or several other toppings on it. The soups and salads are just filler - Bring me cheese!

I've heard about this. It seems to be in vogue now to have specialty food trucks.

But ... but ... but ... that picture was taken in daylight.

That's the truck you need at two o'clock in the morning.

Who wants to go into business with me?

Seriously, I have start-up money.

We have a grilled cheese (http://www.chedds.com/) restaurant in Austin. I haven't been but I understand it is pretty much all grilled cheese, they have some other things but what you really want is grilled cheese.

We have a place like that. It's called Melt. Apparently it's really good and next to impossible to get into. I think I need to try this place out...
And now I really want grilled cheese, pickles and tomato soup. Send that thing my way!

I would have grilled cheese and tomato soup in the summer and add chili in the winter.

OMG...cheese...and bacon...and bread?! *swoons* I can resist the ice cream truck, but I would NOT be able to resist the grilled-cheese truck. Especially with tomato soup. :o

I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves cheese, especially the melted on buttery bread variety:D Around here there's a cupcake truck, a pizza truck, and now the grilled cheese truck. My uncle was talking about doing some kind of mobile food business and we thought crazy donuts would be fun. The breakfast crowd is an ignored group in the mobile food industry! Or my idea of the ice cream truck. Not crappy bars, but real hard ice cream and you make sundaes. That'd be supreme.

You have a cupcake truck?!!! A mobile source of cakes?!!! If only such a thing would pass through here on a regular basis....Maybe that can be my plan B if I can't land a job in science....

The 2 a.m. truck would have both cupcakes and grilled cheese. Creeping through the neighborhood like the ice cream trucks, playing "Sugar Magnolia" on a music box - not too loud so as not to bother the sober citizens. Customers would stagger out of their houses like a cross between the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Night of the Living Dead.

Add tomato soup to the truck and the sober citizens will join in as well :)

This might be worth the bike ride to CT.... good way to justify the calories

And so the TE'ers descended on Connecticut...

(Why am I still living in Ohio when there are places with cupcake trucks and grilled cheese trucks? There should be a soup truck as well.)

We have soup trucks and almost every other kind of food cart/truck you can imagine. There's even a food court type place downtown that has them lined up. You can pick an appetizer, main course, and dessert from different ones. And we're a bicycle friendly city. Just saying......;):p:D

OMG, a cupcake truck? Thank goodness there are no cupcake trucks in my neck of the woods or I'd be doomed. Doomed, I tell you!

(When I was in college, the local quickie mart had a sandwich called the 'birdman' which was turkey, chicken and tons of other unknown crap that was consumed in large quantities by drunk college kids at 2 am. Said quickie mart got smart and got a truck and parked said truck outside of college parties and made a KILLING on us. Reminded me of the sausage vendors in downtown Boston - also making a killing when the bars closed. Oh the brilliant things we would eat when young and drunk...)

We "almost" have that in Austin... there's one B&M location the others are airstream trailers... they don't move though :) http://heycupcake.com/locations.html

You know what, Zen, if I could retire at full pension right now, I might take you up on that offer. There are a lot of locations where you could make a mint, i.e., business parks w/no really good options for lunch, unless you want to drive.

I'm surprised so many people are overlooking the pizza truck. It's a truck with an oven in the back and they make the pizza on the spot. I think that's pretty sweet. But I also have access to a brick oven, so it's not exactly a novelty to me. There are a whole bunch of Mexican vendors around the corner from work, but these other trucks are aiming for a slightly higher-end clientele. The cupcakes aren't run-of-the-mill cupcakes, but gourmet creations. It wasn't normal grilled cheese, it was a special blend of cheeses one normally wouldn't use in such a sandwich. I guess that's the new thing, gourmet food on the go.

Don't forget people that only have 30 minutes for lunch and don't have the time to drive anywhere. They'd appreciate your presence as well.

And the good news for me is every one I have had has been dried out and not so good. I tried 3 different types, 3 different trailers. I gave up, it is how they make them. Thank goodness since I have a weakness for cupcakes!

Exactly my point. Where I work, if you take more than 30 minutes for lunch, you have to make up the time.

I don't think nationality has anything to do with loving grilled cheese, but I could be mistaken. My mom (God rest her soul) used to make us grilled cheese and tomato soup when we were sick, so it's the ultimate comfort food for me.

You might be the only one who doesn't like the look of it! ;):D:)
