So I wrecked last Sunday. No one is quite sure how I went through the air or even how I landed (no damage besides my back) but from what I remember, it sounded like I hit the back of my helmet on the (soft dirt) trail before landing in some sort of crumpled heap. The park ranger and EMTs looked at the helmet and said it looked fine with just some minor scratches. It wasn't damaged enough for them to even bring it to the hospital with me. The EMTs told me that I wouldn't need to replace it. Not that it's going to matter for quite awhile, but should I replace it anyway?

(I haven't seen it so y'alls opinion is as good as mine right now!)

That's really scary that EMTs would tell you that. Honestly, I'd report it to their supervisor. What if they told someone that who didn't know to ask others?

The only way to know for sure if a helmet is damaged is to X-ray it. If you're going to be laid up for a while (I sure hope it's quick!), contact the manufacturer; I think most of them will do that for free (motorcycle helmet manufacturers will, not sure about bicis). If it's okay, they'll send it back to you; if not, then you may be eligible for a crash replacement discount.

Replace it. Your head is worth it.

Thanks oakleaf, wouldn't have thought of that - I'll check with the manufacturer when I get home from here. I have about 6 months to take care of it so the time to mail it there and back is no big deal.

I"d replace it, why even question it? I bet if you look hard enough you'll find cracks it in. It sounds like the emts were called in due to the nature of your wreck, and you would have second thoughts?

From what I understand, having broken more than my share of helmets, is that they are designed for one major impact. The foam will fracture in a microcrystalline manner before the cracks ever show. Other kinds of helmets, like rock climbing and kayaking, have foam that is designed to take multiple hits, but not bike helmets.

Ehh, just really liked this one and it's been discontinued. And their guess (by the burst fracture) was that my back took the brunt of the impact, though there isn't a bruise on my body to verify anything.

If nothing else, I've got at least 6 months to watch sale prices to get a good deal on a new one!

What kind was it?

I vote with the masses = replace it. Your head is worth it. I, for one, would not like to live in diapers for the rest of my life.
