Hey ladies! (And gents! - this event is co-ed)

Bike Against the Odds Training Ride #2

20 miles, 1670 ft of climbing

Meet at Lake Merritt - Fairyland parking lot entrance (Bellevue and Grand)

Starting at Lake Merritt we'll climb Broadway to cross Highway 24 where it picks up Tunnel Road. Tunnel Road is a steady climb to Skyline Blvd with beautiful views of the bay area. Skyline is mostly rolling hills, but there is one steady climb at the end, followed by an exciting (steep and windy) descent to the intersection of Joaquin Miller road. The descent on Joaquin Miller is very steep and caution should be used. From the base of Joaquin Miller it’s a mild descent via Mountain Blvd and Park Blvd back to the Lake.

We'll stop frequently to wait for everyone to catch up. Please bring plenty of water. I'll have mini-lunabars to snack on. RSVP (or PM me) for a free waterbottle at the training ride.

Bike Against the Odds is a fundraising event for the Breast Cancer Fund. For more info on the event (http://breastcancerfund.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=104407)

Hi Cindy-
Looking forward to doing the 9/11 ride. I just had a pre-training ride training ride today with BikerZ. We started at the intersection at Thornhill and Skyline and then continued along Skyline to Juaquin Miller Then, we took Redwood to begin the Pinehurst climb. BikerZ was awesome. I think she's now over her fear of hills!

Does it count if I did something that will result in more rides in the future?

I took my trusty faithfull GT Outpost Trail into the shop for the yearly tune-up...she's needed for 5 years. After our rides to work last week I tried to wipe the silly grin off my face once i got used to the slower speed vs my road bike hot dayum it was fun.

So I thought to my self "self I'll get her tuned, lubed, wheels trued, that sorta thing and save "Menace" more for the road rides", so the GT is at the spa.

Also you can thank me for the nice weather. Possible showers were predicted this afternoon and I thought "if I ride they are gauranteed but if Mae (faithful dog) and I drive the bike to the shop the weather will be perfect for bikerz and the gang and I'll wish rode"

Cindy - great ride! Thanks! Helga and I ended up with 23.4 miles on our computers by the time we got back...

I had some trouble at the end there with my rear gears - they just wouldn't settle in after I dropped the chain. Grrr - but we made it to Roberts then turned around. I hope you all remembered we were turning back there, and weren't waiting for us down at J Miller... I asked a passing cyclist to relay the message to you if he saw a gang of riders loitering at the stop light! (And note to self - get Cindy's cell number for the next ride!)

Trek - muchas gracias for the nice weather! Will you make it for next week's ride? You don't want to miss Old Tunnel AND Pinehurst, do you? Maybe you need a wake up call???

you're excused Dita ;),

and I do believe there is a starbucks or peets (if you prefer) in the vicinity of the lake :D. We didn't leave today until 8:20ish so you would have been just fine. Hope to see you in two weeks, if not before, and have fun at the family get-together. We'll be thinking of you :)

P.S. a tuned bike is a happy bike

Helga

You're welcome!!! :D It is nice to see everyone out there doing their best, pushing themselves further than they might otherwise. That's why the LUNA Chix are out there and I'm glad to be part of that!

Another beautiful day indeed.......

Great ride! Glad you could make it. You did great! (my number is on the way)

arrggh! Sorry about your gears.

I do recall you saying you started and would end your loop somewhere up there on Skyline, but I couldn't remember where. And - yes - the nice biker came down and gave us the word - thanks!!

see ya next week :)

Ann, Helga, and I were joined by Angela, Eileen, Larry, Lee, Laura, and Sarah. Ann proxied as the sweep since I was the lone LUNA Chick.

Lots of conversation going up Broadway as we were slow-going thanks to the traffic lights. We had a bit of a climb the last bit of Broadway and then started our ascent up Old Tunnel Road to Skyline. I never grow tired of the amazing views and beautiful homes along Skyline. And so many cyclists out enjoying the day. The cars are infrequent and accustomed to the cyclists so it is a fairly safe environment to bike. After Helga and Ann depart for home, the remainder of us boogy down Joaquin Miller road (wheeeeee!!!), to Mtn. Blvd. then we take a bit of a detour (suggested by Angela) through another AMAZING residential area (Terrace Glen) - the houses were soooo beautiful - something out of a story book. Soon we were back at the lake with riders dropping off here and there to go to their cars or nearby residences.

All in all - a great day!
